Text from Pages 1 - 24 of the 1940 volume:

THE TARGET Published by Willard Junior High School Berkeley, California JUNE 1940 STUDENT GOVERNMENT In planning for this semester the Student Council under the leadership of the president of the Student Body, Scotty George, aimed to stimulate participation in and improve our system of student government. For this purpose a series of assemblies was held at which student officers presented the aims and accomplishments of the departments they represented. To create further interest the presidents of Burbank and Garfield Student Bodies were invited to tell how student government functions in their schools. Their interesting talks indicated the popularity of the system among the students they represented. One of the assemblies especially honored Willard students of highest scholastic standing. At that time they received their gold pins or certifi- cates signifying membership in either the Senior or Junior Honor Societies. STUDENT COUNCIL WILLARD COURT SENATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT As an entertainment feature a Talent Day” sponsored by the music de- partment was acclaimed with enthusiasm. Throughout the term the Student Council and the Senate, guided by Willard’s vice-president, Bill Jaeger, have been engaged in completing the revision of Willard’s constitution, which is now ready for the new school year. Both the Senate and Student Council have heartily co-operated with Chief Justice Jay Doubleday and his court as well as with our Chief of Police, Arthur Adams, who reports that off icers of the Student Control heartily appreciate their efforts as well as that of Willard Student Body, whose loyalty and law-abiding standards never fail. We shall miss you as individuals and as an espe- cially fine class. Our good wishes go with you. Very sincerely yours, C. K. HAYES. THE HIGH NINE CLASS - - - , v •- The High Nines, with Ronnie Campbell as their leader, have been in the foreground of all the leading activities of the season. Their Valentine Dance was a big success, and another is on the way. The results of the election for May Queen gave the two top honors to High Nine girls. Margaret McLeod was chosen queen and Carol Saunders her maid of honor. The president of the Girls’ League, Susan Pillsbury, is a member of the class, and under her leadership practically every Willard girl has been enter- tained at one or more of the three Big Sister Parties. The League’s Fashion Show and Leap Year Dance were outstanding events of the term, and of course they were enthusiastically sponsored by the High Nines. Carl Potts, a High Nine and president of the Boys’ Association, of which every Willard boy is a member, has been ably assisted by the class in all the features of the Association’s program. Willard’s athletic managers, Annie Craig and Don Flaherty, report the High Nines as eager participants in all sports of the season. They have played hard and well in every intramural and interscholastic game for which they have been scheduled. Their superior spirit of sportsmanship and co-operation on the field and in the classroom will be hard to duplicate.
