Roberts Bates l I ETCTE WILLARD SCHOOL sfo' building. The first classes to occupy Willard School moved from Lafayette School in February, 1929. Miss Rose Powell fonned a little red wagon parade and had her class move their supplies from Lafayette to the new f Through the years the building has been used for civic meetings, for L , 7 g 'T' holding church services and as a Sunday School Building. When the war curtailed normal growth of recreational facilities for our young people, regular teen-age dances were held in the auditorium as long as the need existed. Every afternoon of the week, a club, Girl Scout or Brownie meeting is held here. During the summer months its fine playground is a center for a super- vised vacation program available to every child in the area. ln its quarter century of existence, Willard School has had only two p1'incipals. J. H. Carmine succeeded Miss Lucy Keeling in 1945. Willard School has always answered the needs of the community. WILLARD BUILDTNG HIGHLIGHTS Reprinted from the Silver Anniversary Booklet of Willard by the Willard PTA 1954 Willard was orginally built in 1929 as an elementary school for an enrollment of 200-300 children. After the Lafayette Shores Apartments were built, the children who lived there were sent to J.E.B. Sturart School in Colonial Place for ayear. The PTA went to the Norfolk School Board stating the crowding conditions and asking that a new addition be started right away so the children could return to Willard. The auditorium Was doubling as the lunchroom and for Physicial Education in inclement weather. As a result of this by September 1953 the new addition to Willard was completed. The new addition consisted of six classrooms, teacher's lounge, nurse's clinic, arts room, music room, fully equiped kitchen, new cafeteria, and a new principal's office. Besides the new addition, the old building will be renovated. We will have our Library extended to include the present Principal's office and the present kitchen. New shelving, new til floors, and new colortex ceiling will be put in the library. There will be a new oil-burning automatic boilers and a new automatic hot water heating system, complete with thermo- stats. We will have an up-to-date, two-way R.C.A. address system which permitsrecord playing, radio, etc. There will be sufficient room for clinics, PTA study groups, PTA hospitality groups, chorale practices, clerical duties, storage for books and supplies, etc. Copied from September 1953 PTA Bulletin The enrollment in 1955-1956 was 585 students having an average classroom size of 19 students. ln 1969-1970 school year, two new gyms, health rooms, rest rooms, a band room and storage areas were put to use. The enrollment was appromixately 830 students. Mobile units were added to relieve the overcrowded conditions, along with more tables and chairs in the cafeteria, and picnic tables outside for the students who bring lunches or buy bag lunches. As of September 1973 the Department Heads had offices, and Willard had a new Graphic Arts Room. But with the enrollment up to 1,096 the lunchroom and locker rooms were quite crowded. A new mobile unit for the Special Education Classes and an enlargement of the parking lot was also added. ln September 1974 Willard received a new look - both inside and out! The building was painted, the fences painted, a new office for the records clerk, a new counter in the main office, larger classrooms for homemaking and woodshop. The stage was torn out for room to accommodate a shower space and new lockers. New Department Head offices, P.E. overflow space and a workroom for teachers are now in the rear of the old auditorium. Two mobile units were also added to replace rooms two and three.
