People value obtaining new knowledge to better themselves and to make a contribution to society. As the WHS Bicentennial Marching Band OUT- REACHES to Willard fans to inspire spirit in the team, so the smoky clouds serve as a backdrop to memories of experiences and goals REACHED in the past. People OUTREACH. They listen. When people listen to themselves, others, or their environment, they gain knowledge to decide what they would like their goals to be. By listening to various ideas, a person has a basis for rejecting or accepting aspects of his life. 5 6 i Behind that Math quiz And all of this which is supposed to be A learning experience for me I find a sense of love. A human’s love for another human. The yearn to teach The desire to reach. Reach out and touch another To try and make him understand What it is to be— In this crazy, crazy society. That, is love. —Carol Beagle 10 Tl al le 1976 Cl those in to Student Life is composed of all those activities which comprise a school year—ball games, classes, plays, and concerts—to name a few. The following pages reflect how the student body of WHS feels about school and life. Sitting so silently thinking of softness sensing serenity Seeing some security saving some sensibility scared of senility Facing futility! —Marilyn Pees Should I try to go higher Even though I may fail To have those below me curse And to have those above me Praise me for trying to reach the best If failure rears it’s well-known head And throws me back to the bottom Will you give me help And not hold it against me Because I have tried to reach the best 12 Student Life Why do I close my eyes Only to hide from the lies? When society puts pressures on us And on the fads they make a fuss. Why do people think of dying Or always leave their problems crying? We need some people to bring us joy. Not the ones that are here to destroy. First we must think our problems through And realize what we must do. It's not enough to think it out. You must also have action and have no doubt. Many people have their problems, too. For conquering problems is nothing new It takes some help and mostly yours 'Cause even society, with help, conquered wars. —Sue Kline People are funny They come and they go Something to argue All things they know People are funny They change like the wind Once glad, then sad Friends in the end Sut thanks be to God He accepts us that way Growing and growing Perfect some day —denny stevens Student Life 13 People telling me where to go what to do If only they’d stop to look at themselves They’d see they were all going in the wrong direction —Kathy Johnson Juniors Unveil Noticeable Improvements Of Raised Spirits —Loree Stanfield I look into the mirror, seeing a Reflection of happiness. Eyes shining, Face glowing. I see joy in the mirror. And you are responsible for this joy. For you have cared for me. You have shown me love. —Ron Kessler To change is to grow Into maturity. Forming opinions Making decisions To change is to grow More to learn Open your self Express your heart So much to learn We are each one of many Not special to anyone But ourselves, just one. No person but ourselves Can feel our hurt Our love, our imperfections. No one. but God. To change is to grow. Grow into maturity. Open your mind. Listen to your heart Hurry, before your mind Pushes you into a hole. Sarah Grossman Student Life 15 This world can do many things for you. It can make you sad; It can make you cry; It can make you happy; It can make you smile —Connie Homan Fight for dear old Willard. Loyal and true. We re here to cheer you So keep on fighting And we'll never fail to cheer you. Fight, fight for dear old Willard. Play hard to win. Never quit fighting And you will win. 16 Student Life Leaves falling softly Rustling beneath the feet. Hundreds of reluctant students Are at it once again. Meeting old friends, Telling of summer fun. Soon the past will be forgotten Present happenings fill the days. High school is a delicate megaphone On a silver chain, Piles of books And lockers too small. The sweaty exitement of a Locker room. Seeing the winning touchdown Cramming for tests that will soon Mean nothing. But working hard all the same High school is where memories are made That we remember all our lives. — Robin King Foreign Exchange Students Learn On Location Some comments by students here and abroad. Beth Dent from Willard on her first impression of Sweden: “I love Sweden. Everything is country- side and little villages. The houses have flower boxes outside all the windows. Tim Allen from Willard: There is much ‘folclore’ in Brazil. Every- one asks me about Pele. the U S. soccer player. Lena Goncalves from Brazil: I really learned so much here and I'm sure I'll never forget my life over here. I really will have memories for the rest of my life. Hector Romero from Mexico: l think it’s (USA) a very good, progressive country. It’s very good that you can choose classes. One thing I like is the people, very good people in the United States. (A) Beth Dent at the foot of a Swedish ski slope (B) Tim Allen and friends in a Brazilian airport (C) Lena Goncalves thinks in a quiet moment at Willard High School. (D) Hector Romero learned many American songs on his guitar while in this country. Carolyn Bean from Rhodesia on U S. schools: “It’s much freer. I enjoy co-education and also not having to wear a uniform. Also, the fact that we have very little homework gives us a lot of free time after school.” Tania Gradella from Brazil: I like choosing my classes, no uni- forms. and cafeteria system. Also. I like shopping centers. MacDon- ald’s and other chain restaurants, and the drive-in bank.” Shari Lewis from Willard: The people in New Zealand are very friendly. Most of the people have horses; cars are very expensive. I ride a bike a half mile to school every day. French is taught by using tapes and taking dictation. New Zealand is really a wonderful place.” (A) Carolyn Bean pauses for a moment from painting scenery for the set of South Pacific (B) Tama Gradella works on her Physics (C) Shari Lewis and Mrs. Brian Cobbe in an amusement park in Hastings. Cathy Reidy reignea as queen at the contest against Tiffin Colum- bian. Senior football players escorted the attendents. Accompanying the national an- them. the blast from a howitzer cannon was set off by the national guard, adding to the excitement. The few dedicated spectators who braved the cold rain were rewarded when halftime featured a special bicenten- nial salute, climaxed when 2,000 helium- filled balloons were released and soon drifted from view. The overall record of the squad, however, did not reflect their true spirit and quality. Early season injuries at key positions left the Flashes weak and open to defeat.
