Pictured above are some of the familiar trophies exhibited in the entrance hall of the high school. In the foreground is the telegram received from President Dwight D. Eisenhower prior to the Senior Chili Supper and Homecoming Game. The corners pic- ture various activities that make up our school life. Sports, music, academic subjects, dramatics, and shop have all contributed to our enjoyment of life as students while at Willard High School. i o inv ii o o We, the Annual Staff of 1954, are trying in this year- book, THE CHIEF, to depict life at Willard High School with pictures and words. By carrying out our theme STAR-DUST , and by showing school activities, from the freshmen to the senior class, chemistry to music, and football to baseball, we have brought to you some of the more eventful moments of the past year. Many mishaps and misfortunes occurred during the formation of this annual, but all has added to the excite- ment and enjoyment in making this 1954 annual a pleas- ure for all to read. We all sincerely wish you the best of luck in the years to come. ro TEXTS INTRODUCTION...........................1 FACULTY................................9 SENIORS...............................15 CLASSES...............................25 SPORTS................................39 ACTIVITIES............................55 ADVERTISEMENTS........................77 ROBERT HUFFMAN Commercial Bowling Green State University—B.S. Dedication The Seniors wish, in recognition of the fine and helpful service of Mr. Robert Huffman, to dedicate this annual to him. While a teach- er at Willard, Mr. Huffman gave untiringly of his inspiration, help, and assistance to all the students. We hope that this, in some measure, can repay his assistance to us. We trust that he will return to teach at Willard and help others as he has helped us. 6 LEFT TO RIGHT: Verna Williams, president; John Rosso; Dr. J. B. For our first experience in self-govern- ment, we elected Miss Elaine Fenner to guide us. Larry Berberick was elected president. Other officers were Nancy Pennybaker, Rita Weeks, and Pat Secor. Under their leader- ship we sponsored a football and a basketball dance. By the time we had been here a year, we had become more acquainted with the customs and rules. We were beginning to build our treasury, which in several years would become more important. We sold Christmas tree decorations and sponsored the usual dances. Mrs. Dale Crossen was elected advisor and Nancy Pennybaker became our first girl president. She was assisted by Pat Secor, Rita Weeks, and Bill Raible. During our next year, we elected Larry Berberick, Larry Foran, Bill Raible and Alan Smith as the officers. Mr. Donald Wolfe was the advisor. We sponsored dances, held a bake sale, and sold basketball pins and candy. Our first efforts at dramatics came when we presented the one-act play, Junior's Mustache. Our Junior year was our most exciting school year. We chose our motto, To have a friend is to be one; our colors, pink and silver; and our flower, the pink rose. We also received our class rings. Miss Mary Hockenbury was chosen advisor and Larry Foran, Jim Gray, Bill Raible, and Larry Berberick were the officers. We readied the football field and dance floor for Homecoming. Our growing treasury was increased by the sale of Christmas and miscellaneous cards, and football programs. We presented the comedy, Mother Is a Freshman , which starred Marilyn Hatton, Arthur Cok, and Carolyn Scott. The one-act play was The City Slicker and Our Nell. The Junior- Senior Prom, “Cinderella Ball, was the outstanding event of the year. We began our final year by electing Mr. Peter Wiebe our advisor, and Larry Foran, Bob Blinzley, Carolyn Scott, and Jane Bishop to carry out the official functions. As a means to build our treasury, we collected sales tax stamps and sponsored the Chili Supper, which made Life Magazine. We entertained the Juniors at the Senior-Junior Dance and gave a successful Senior Play. Culminating our year at Willard was May 27, when each of us received his diploma. The last activity of the class of '54 was the wonderful days we spent in New York City. HISTORY As the juniors reached their third year of high school, they realized that soon they would have to assume many more important duties and activities. Highlights of the year were: class rings, the Junior-Senior Banquet, Homecoming, and the Junior Play. The annual class play presented by the juniors was “Our Miss Brooks. Among the secondary activities of the juniors were the sale of potato chips at noon, the sale of programs at football games, and the sponsoring of dances after the games. The best of luck to the future seniors. May everything they undertake be successful. JUNIOR OFFICERS TOP ROW: Tom Overly, Miss Hockenbury, Harlene Stapf. BOTTOM ROW: David Amstutz, Bob Wolfe. Both the team and spectators appreciate the time and effort of the members of the band. It takes many hours of practice to perfect a performance of this type. The band was led by Donna Banicki. The other majorettes were Nancy Dickerson and Carolyn Dye. It was with the co-operation of all the members that successful and enjoyable performances were given. The concert band included the marching band, shown above, and the members on the athletic squad. They gave a spring concert and many other pleasant performances. 56 FIRST ROW: Dorothy Thompson, Geri Willioms, Patricio Crawford, Noncy Koppler, Sally Smith, Nedro Reed, Colleen McLaughlin, Patricio Rosier, Janet Wilkinson, Jane Bishop, Kaye Anthony, Donna Overly, Harlene Stapf, Jane Hargrove, Sandra Smith, Roberta Kauffman, Carole Mclnerney, Connie Richards. The story deals with the young Lady Isabel left to be sacrificed to her money-mad relatives. After many trials and heart-aches, right triumphs. The play is set in England during the 1930's. It evolves about a winsome heroine, a scheming villain, a noble young man, and a sharp- tongued old maid. Harrassed Miss Brooks, played by Ann Leak, endeavors to have play practice amidst the confusion of basketball and band practices. Finally, to complicate matters, the night of the play one of the cast develops a case of appendicitis; and coach Hugo Longacre, played by Bob Huff, steps into the part of the High Llama. However, out of all this chaos, including two broken vases, comes romance and a happy ending. OUR MISS BROOKS Miss Brooks Miss Finch Hugo Longacre Mr. Wadsworth Miss Audubon Elsie............. The people who now appear as polished actors appeared during rehearsals as regular students—some working hard, some studying dili- gently, some enjoying the hard work, and some engaged in horseplay. This play, “Our Hearts were Young and Gay,” was presented by students from the four high school classes. It was our first all-school play. The story was that of two young women going to Europe to “emancipate themselves. The play was directed by Miss Carole Nince- helser and Miss Mary Hockenbury. S| niisli i lull “Los Caballeros Gozan Buen Ano” “Los Caballeros began the year with a “fiesta at the Central Grade School, November 3. At this time the following officers were elected: President, Alan Smith; Vice-President, Harlene Stapf; Secretary-Treasurer, Bob McKnight; Social Chairman, Pat Secor. The Christmas celebration was held at Agnes Wilkinson’s, December 17. “Los Caballeros” enjoyed Spanish bingo, “Hola Aqui,’ and “Las Ocho Familias”. Their snowman “pinata was broken and all grabbed the goodies. Mr. McElfish entertained them with slides which were taken while he journeyed through the Central American countries. The annual Spanish banquet, held in April, climaxed the year s activities. A Mexican dinner was served and the evening was highlighted by the presenting of a mystery play and the singing of Spanish songs. 71 To the class of ’54 these scenes of Junior-Senior will bring back memories of hard work, much fun, and many friendships made.
