Text from Pages 1 - 64 of the 1945 volume:

A A BIG CHIEF WILLIE Willard 43 i ,, - .S 1 km O Youive all heard of the manpower shortage! It hnally hit the stall of the 1945 Chief, and in desperation we hired a real chief to help us edit the hook. Willie was in everything, he spilled ruh- ber cement, tore corners off of pictures, and even misspelled words when we assigned him to the copy desk. But in all, he was a good Indian, and he did know the ins and outs of classes, activities, sports, and faculty, so in spite of his shortcomings we gave him the joh of showing you Willard High School in the pages of the 1945 CHIEF . . . EDICA TIO, DEDICATED TO THE BOYS OF WILLARD WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR II Today, in a million homes across America, the war is a personal pain, realis- tic horror. There, behind the gold stars, the hopes of parenthood, the plans of tomorrow are shattered. But, to wethe living, tomorrow comes at the same pace. And to us, the living, the torch of their dreams and their devotion is handed. The chal- lenge of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address becomes a vivid reality. Out from every gold star, it flings its message to one hundred and thirty- eight million Americans: - 4'It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us . . . that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion . . . that we here highly resolve that these dead shall have not died in vein . . . that this nation, under Cod, shall have a new birth of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. The following boys from Willard have given their lives fighting for their country: CECIL BURR JAMES BURTON LOREN DAY CLAYTON DERMER WAYNE DERMER Raymond Drury JOHN ROBERT EYLER DALE FINN EUGENE HEISER JUNIOR HOWARD CLARENCE MILLER THOMAS PERRILL NOEMAN ROTRUCK SAM SLUSHER WALTER THOMPSON HOWARD WEINBERG VERNARD JACOBS tht- me-nihvrs of lhf- Svhooi Board haw' playful in our live-s. The Seniors this year have been outstanding in music, drama, sports and art. Our Juniors come next. They will take over the leadership as Seniors. It will be their duty then to show their fellow stu- dents better ways in student government. The Sophomores, who are going to he up- perclassmen next year, have a great re- sponsibility under the leadership of the Seniors, we are sure they can carry on. Then our Freshmen who, although green, are always in the middle of some excite- ment. Last but not least our Eighth graders with their troubles and always getting into jams especially going down the wrong stairs. ICJRS We, the Seniors of 1945, are taking many pleasant mem- ories with us, as we pass through the doors of Willard High for the last time. With those pleasant memories we will think of the hardships we encountered. These were step- ping stones to the goal we strived for and finally reached. The Seniors extend their sincere thanks to Mr. Cates, Mr. Wiebe and the faculty, who have so faithfully served them not only as teachers but as real friends. It is because of their helpful guidance that we have been able to achieve this goal. CLASS OFFICERS Jones, Ruth Ann Bevier. Ani? of eb SPORTS - Y if A lot of things have happened in the Willard High School sports this year. In football and basket- ball, we joined a new league called Wfhe Northern Ohio League. In this league are eight schools in- cluding Norwalk, Bellevue, Crestline, Upper San- dusky, Calion, Shelby, and Bucyrus. Our new coach, Mr. Robert Mustain, who had been recently discharged from the army, came to our school. His military training enabled him to put the boys through a rugged training program, which improved the phy- sical condition of all the boys. We are looking for- ward to an even more successful season next year.
