But gradually changing fastbound traditions into acceptable customs, replacing old loyal- ties With new interests, sailors and civilians, with understanding and determination developed a unified activity program and an organized college life embodying the spirit that is truly Wil- lamette. The association of a student with his professors provides direction toward ideals and results in enrichment of the college experience, making it one not only of the acquisition of knowledge but also the attainment of real living. 'mmwtmis -memes, lf W is sms G. Herbert Smith President of the University With the clear foresight and efficiency of a good businessman President George Herbert Smith has successfully directed the destiny of Willamette Uni- versity during its third Wartime year. Largely by the efforts of President Smith the Navy V-12 Training Unit was stationed this year on the campus and through his continued interest and cooperation with the Naval Administrators the pro- gram has seen good sailing since the outset and has proved a saving measure for the University. It is with hope and assurance that each member of the Willamette family looks to the progressive leadership and energetic spirit of President Smith for constant guidance in the future. Qfficers of Willamette V-I2 Unit Starting Willamette University on its first three-semester academic year, the Navy V-12 Officer Training Unit came to the campus in July. With the battalion came the three officers of the command to direct the organization of the unit and to carry on its preparational program. Lt. George C. Bliss, com- manding officer, Lt. Marshall E. Woodell, executive officer, and Captain George W. Shepard, medical officer, through their judicious guidance of the unit have gained the deserved respect of the entire university. The officers, with the men of the battalion, have brought to Willamette a touch of the glamour that is the U.S. Navy, but have brought as Well a strong- er, necessary realization of the seriousness of our nation at war.
