L Seven Liberal Arts. In the twelfth century they were the nucleus M about which developed the University of Paris, the first university of modern type. When Willamette University first emerged in 1853 from ff , the Oregon Institute, it was as a College of Liberal Arts. Law and medi- K X cine were added later. cv-1 X-:aaa This priority in time suggests also its fundamental place in higher ? 9-5 -'f-' education, for it is on such general training in the liberal arts that the WW' 'S J., 1 9 I I at P . The growth of the College of Liberal Arts at Willamette, like that of other institutions of higher learning, has been rapid in recent years. Even the requirements for entrance, for continuance in residence and for gradu- ation have steadily advanced. In the last ten years it has more than doubled in the number of students in attendance, in number of its faculty and in endowment, and has now a student body well over five hundred, a faculty of thirty-eight members, a beautiful campus located at the civic center of Salem, the capital of the State, and an endowment of a million dollars. The quality of its work is attested by membership in the Associa- tion of American Universities and by the fact that its graduates are accept- ed in the leading graduate schools-the two tests that are the final mark of quality.
