But, for the moment they add excitement; their lives take us on imaginary journeys. Tulsa is the buckle of the Bible belt and Rogers is nestled in the middle of this growing metropolis. Trends and fashion give each year a unique look and distinguishes us from those who were and those vet to come. Homecomings honor those who gain popularity and offer opportunity for every one to show their loyalty. Every day there was something unique to make this a year we ' ll never forget. This de- scribes the team, not in terms of wins or losses, but in terms of character. The Ropers were successful because on field and off they did their best. Never can the Varsity be called losers considering their sportsman- like manner, the struggle to prove themselves — not to mention their never say die spirit. The support of our spectators was outstanding. The Ropers football thrived on the high morale of their band, cheerleaders, friends and most of all, the support of each and every parent. They did their best — that ' s what made them winners and that means SUCCESS. Board of Education On July 30, 1968. the Attorney General, on behalf of the United States of America, alleged that the Tulsa School District had engaged in racial discrimination in the operation of the Tulsa Public Schools and had denied minority students the equal protection of the laws in violation of the Four- teenth Amendment to the Federal Constitution. The case was in and out of the courts from 1968 to 1974. As a result of the Court Order, minority students living in the Carver and Washington attendance area were in- voluntarily transferred to schools some distance from their neighbor- hood. Students in seven elementary schools were involved in involuntary reassignments through the pairing or clustering of their schools. The school system responded, for the most part, however, to its desegregation require- ments through a voluntary approach to desegregation through the estab- lishment of magnet schools, an approach which has proved very suc- cessful and has received nationwide attention. On November 9, 1983, more than fifteen years since the initiation of this litigation relating to the desegregation of theTulsa Public Schools, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma has found that the Tulsa Public School District has satisfactorily complied with all orders of the Court, that the Tulsa School Dis- trict has achieved a unitary status, and the case is dismissed. Dr. Larry Zenke Superintendent Mr. Richard Cox Principal The following is an excerpt from remarks given by Mr. Cox to the faculty at the opening of school: I am more deeply concerned with our failure to communicate and understand our students than I am about any other problem we face. We of the older generation must learn to look at the world in which these young people live, we must somehow manage to see things as they see them. Among the many things we mav foresee in the future, only one thing is certain — it will be a time of rapid change. The rapiditv and enthusiasm with which thev pick up new ideas and new ways of doing things are almost appalling; but, tempered with judgement, these are the traits that will stand them in good stead in this rapidlv moving world. If they can learn not to take themselves too seriously, and if thev can find a faith that gives meaning to their lives, they ought to have more fun than anybody before them. This is a wonderful time to be alive, a particularly wonderful time to be young and a particularly challenging time for education. In essence, our job is to help them acquire the intellectual tools, the inquiring minds, the emotional stability and the determination that the will need to meet the challenges facing their generation.
