Will Rogers High School 3909 E. 5th Place. Tulsa, Oklahoma 74 1 1 2 Cover Artwork by Rusty Mullinex w w. Richard Cox, Principal NEW 1 ROPER! Mr. Richard Cox came to us this year from Edison High to serve as principal. He played a very important role in the lives of everyone at Will Rogers, making major decisions everyday. He worked hard to help build school spirit and get everyone involved. Mr. Cox graduated from McAlester High School, and went on to The University of Tulsa, where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree and his Master of Educational Administration degree. He also did post-graduate work at TU. His first teaching job was at Clinton jr. High in 1955, where he taught instrumental music for three years. In 1958 he was offered an instrumental music position at the new Edison High School, where he originated Tulsa Public Schools ' first jazz band, which subsequently won many state and national music honors. After seven years, he moved from instrumental music instructor to class counselor at Edison. He served as counselor for four years, then he accepted the position of Assistant Principal. Finally, after eight years as Assistant Principal, he took on the job of Principal of Edison High School. In June of 1982, Mr. Cox was transferred to Will Rogers High School. Mr. Cox says he is very impressed by the school ' s history of pride and tradition, and he has found Rogers students and faculty to be very friendly. They welcomed him with warm smiles. Mr. Cox ' s major goal is to commit himself to helping keep up a good reputation for Rogers, and to give the students a positive attitude toward succeeding. He wants all Ropers to feel enthusiastic about their education and to join in extra curricular activities. Mr. Cox realizes that he cannot achieve these goals alone — he needs the help of the faculty and the student body, as well as the parents, and he is working to achieve this. He also hopes to improve Rogers ' academic standing. Mr. Cox is very proud to be a Roper and wants to be known as Rogers ' 1 fan! So far Ropers think that he is well on his way! This year Tina Kay Proctor was chosen to represent our school as Miss Will Rogers XLIV. She was chosen for her friendliness, beauty, and participation in school activities. Tina served as head basketball cheerleader, Vice-President of the Senior class, member of the Lariat Staff, member of FCA, and she was chosen September Girl of the Month. Tina enjoys the stock car races with her dad, and waterskiing at Grand Lake. She plans to attend Northeastern University at Talequah next fall where she hopes to become a cheerleader. This year the student body selected Miss Dana Lee McCurry as Band Queen. Dana was active in the National Honor Society, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Chorale and the ever-popular Marching Band. She is also a very active member of the Glen Station Church of God. As Band Queen, Dana attended all band activities. She lent her spirit in all Marching Contests, Parades, and at all football games. The best part of being Queen was knowing that I was chosen to represent the Instrumental Music Department, she stated. 1382-4383 Sfcand 2lae , f t ' ' t UNIVERSITY OF TULSA - SKE CONGRATULATIONS MISS DArffi LEE MCCURRY 13S2 ROGERS BOND GUEEN Ropers E Z UU les BQ QUARTER j immsan 3 3 3 tjmeoutsleft OSmO TO GO 00 BALI ON 00 NEWSCEIMTER Congratulations to Queen Dana Lee McCurry. Her other activities included Softball, playing clarinet in the Tulsa Community Band and participation in the Youth Group at First Christian Church where she attends regularly. When I found out I was an attendant to Dana, I was thrilled to be chosen to represent the Music Department of Rogers, Linda proclaimed. ind LJt een S ftenaan s c de tHaa Ji The Second Attendant to the Band Queen was Miss Brandy Holley. Brandy, being the active person that she is, was involved in various activities. An outstanding member of N.H.S., she was also active in Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and V.I.C.A., as well as an active member of the Roselawn Baptist Church Youth Group. Brandy ' s reaction to the outcome of Band Queen was one of surprise. I ' m happy to stand along side Dana and Linda, but most importantly, to also show how important the Instrumental Music Department of Rogers really is! % N.H.S. Sponsor and Officers: (L to R) Mrs Hurd, Dan Klein, Darelyn Esmeyer, Mark Hembree, Brent Keys. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to promote scholarship, leadership, character, and service, therefore membership in N.H.S. is nationally recognized as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. The Will Rogers chapter of N.H.S. this year initiated 74 members at ceremonies held during Back-To-School Night in October. The seniors initiated each had a grade point average of 3.25 or better, while junior candidates were each required to have a 3.5 average. A reception for new N.H.S. members and their families was held in the library after the initiation ceremonies. (fa i o c M A Y AFS: Nicky Hopa The AFS program offers high school students the chance to live in a foreign country and to experience a culture which is different from their own. This year Rogers students welcomed Miss Nicky Hopa from New Zealand, who spent the year at Rogers as part of the senior class. Nicky lived in the home of her AFS parents Don and Carol Collins, who have been supporters of AFS for several years. Ropers found Nicky to be a bright, totally charming girl, who maintained an A average in her classes while staying busy with special correspondence lessons from her school in New Zealand. Nicky also took part in AFS activities in Tulsa, and was a member of the Spanish Club, and part of the Roper tennis team. When she found time for hobbies, she enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, dancing, and just having fun! A major adjustment for Nicky was coping with American English, which to her ear sounded quite different from the English she spoke. The size of Rogers also called for some adjusting, since Nicky ' s school back home was much smaller. Nicky said that she loves Rogers and the people she has met in Tulsa, and that when she returns home to New Zealand, where she will enter college and study to become a teacher, she will look forward to one day returning to the United States, and to Tulsa, her second home. Nicky reads a note from a friend. Nicky and her AFS mother, Carol Collins, smile for the yearbook. Steve Curtis teaches Nicky to play the guitar. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Mr. Tom McGuire had many important responsibilities as assistant principal of Rogers this year. Among these were overseeing school sponsored activities, student fund raising, and Board of Control. He played an important role in the life of all Ropers. V Tom McGuire Mr. McGuire discusses an important matter. Just finishing his third year at Rogers. Mr. Scott Richardson was a vital part of the Rogers community. In addition to overseeing curriculum development, orientation of new teachers, and representation of the school on district committees, Mr. Richardson worked hard to make life easier for everyone at Rogers. Mr. Richardson explains to Mrs. Richards. Scott Richardson NURSE Dorothy Marouk The school nurse Mrs Dorothy Marouk, as usual worked hard to make sure that Ropers maintained good health. She was on duty all day Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and in the morning on Tuesday, and in the afternoon on Thursday, since she also served at a Tulsa elementary SC A°headache, a toothache, or a major medical emergency - Mrs. Marouk was ready to care for and comfort a student patient in a most professional way. LIBRARY Sharon Meeks Tricia Hardin The library at Will Rogers is a pleasant place to be, whether a student or faculty member wants to study or research information or to find a book or magazine to read for enjoyment. Mrs. Sharon Meeks, the librarian, and her assistant, Mrs. Tricia Hardin, worked hard to keep the library services the best. In addition to printed material, the library also handled the audio-visual services at Rogers — a huge job involving film orders, equipment, and video tape screenings for entire classes. The librarian and her staff worked long hours to serve Ropers ' library needs. Tricia hard at work Mrs. Meeks arranges flowers for the NHS reception. . -V I Mrs. Alford shows us her Monday smile Deans and Counselors s z Mrs. Woodward calls a parent. Mr. Lack hard at work. Mr. Loyd takes care of business. Mr. Howl takes time out to pose. This year Rogers had the services of three academic counselors and two guidance deans. Our deans and counselors did more for our school than we sometimes gave them credit for. It was not always an easy job keeping Roper students in line. The deans and counselors helped with personal as well as academic problems when students were in need of guidance. They worked to help students maintain a good attendance record and they worked to improve student discipline. The deans and counselors put a lot of effort into their jobs and made a big difference in many Ropers ' lives. Versie Alford Wes Howl Dean Loyd OFFICE STAFF Mrs. Tibbs enjoys her work! Without the help of the office staff, most school days would be mass confusion. Often taken for granted, the ladies who run the three offices at Will Rogers help keep things running smoothly at Will on the Hill. Their jobs are not easy, considering how many students and how much paperwork they must keep track of daily, but by working long hours and caring about the people they serve, the staffs of the Main Office, Registrar ' s Office, and the Attendance Office make a tough job look easy. ]oAnn Fleming Principal ' s Secretary Mrs. Arney needs an extra hand. As the class of ' 83 entered the halls in September, we felt the excitement of finally becoming seniors. With a new principal and a few new teachers, some changes were made. But each senior was able to adjust to these changes, and we considered ourselves as one big family. Yet with each passing day, the senior class was saddened at the thought of leaving Will on the Hill. There were many senior-sponsored activities that not only raised money for the class, but made our year more memorable — activities such as the Howdy Dance, Homecoming, selling Roper sweatshirts and Christmas carnations, Class Day, Vespers and so many more. Most felt the year passed too quickly, and with graduation upon us, we finally faced the end of our high school years. But for the class of ' 83, the end is the only the beginning. The organization ' s primary objective is to give students a voice in the affairs of the school. The Student Council consists of one representative from each homeroom elected to attend meetings. Mr. )im Burton served as the Student Council sponsor for the fourteenth year. During the year the Student Council officers participated in and sponsored many activities. In October the Student Council sponsored the monthly Superintendent Advisory meeting. In November they attended the State Convention at Yukon, Oklahoma. The convention was held at the Yukon High School where the visiting students were taken in by host families. The convention was a learning experience consisting mainly of discussion groups. Also in November the Council sponsored Will ' s Week, held annually to celebrate Will Rogers ' birthday. The week consisted of competition in roping, wagon and tricycle races, and the outstanding Seniors were selected by the student body. Other Student Council sponsored activities included the sale of TWR blue and gold rubgy shirts, a Christmas Tea, and a leadership breakfast held for incoming sophomores. The Council also selected a committee of interested students to revise the Student Council Constitution, which will be effective in the year 1983-84. RED CROSS The Rogers chapter of the American Red Cross, sponsored by Mr. Jim Potts had several activities lined up for Will-On-the-Hill this year. In December Red Cross members filled nearly 200 Christmas stockings with candy, nuts, fruit, and toys. These were distributed to several recreation centers around Tulsa. The club held a membership drive in February, and later in the year conducted a blood drive at Rogers, urging all faculty members and any student who was 17 or 18 years old to give blood. Red Cross members fill the stockings The 1 983 yearbook staff, consisting of 28 members, met every day in room 305 during 4th hour to create the 1 983 Lariat. The first step was to decide what went where in the book, and how many pages were needed. At the beginning of the year staff members worked hard to learn how to draw a layout, write copy, and crop pictures, then the real work began: doing it all. We faced a constant battle against deadlines, but we worked with confidence and enthusiasm. We hope the ' 83 Lariat will be one of your high school years ' treasures! forgo: to load the camera! Approximately one month of work was required to put out each edition. Hoof Prints staff consisted of nine seniors and two juniors. This year ' s editor-in-chief was senior Darelyn Esmeyer. Copies of Hoof Prints were printed by Mr. Bill Schneider ' s vocational printing classes, and approximately 350 copies of each edition were sold for 25 t each. After lots of hard work and after school rehearsals, the curtain went up on Dec. 9th, for 2 performances with Mike Anderson in the lead role of stage-manager. Members of Masque and Gavel Club also participated in the Memorial speech contest and Voice of Democracy speech contest. In the spring the club staged The Man Who Came to Dinner. This was the final play for senior members and when the final curtain came down, it brought many tears and fond farewells. This year stagecraft was once again supervised by Mrs. Barbara Hambric. The group was small in number but big in enthusiasm. The crew ran sound, lights, and built all stage sets for assemblies, concerts, and forums held in the Will Rogers auditorium. Through this effort, however, the Tulsa Roper Spirit emerged. It took a lot of hard work, and we kept our chins up and our heads high, but most of all we concentrated; that was the key word, said Senior Flag Captain Rhonda Trekell. The hard work paid off when the Roper Band took the field during halftime during the football season. ROPER SPIRIT L to R: Sandra Holley, Teresa Jones. Sonia Henson, Cathy Moreno, Debbie Clarke. The 3 1 -member group was again directed by Mrs. Mary Louise Rose. Among the activities Chorale members participated in this year were Christmas singing at the Williams Plaza Hotel, singing for private parties, performing for the PTA and for the Principals ' Annual Christmas Banquet, singing at feeder schools to promote enrollment in music at Rogers, and performances for Tulsa civic organizations and community churches. Chorale also sang at the Vesper Service during graduation, at the high school choir festival, at the Rogers Spring Concert, and twice at The University of Tulsa. To raise money for Chorale activities, members sold soap and tickets to their spring concert. The Chorale also received some donations from several Tulsa civic groups. 1982-1983 Chorale officers were chosen by a vote of the choir members. The officers were Diana Manifold, President; Les Cline, Vice-President; Maria Martin, Secretary-Treasurer; and Diana Manifold, Student Director. Gospel Quartet performs in an assembly. They practiced for upcoming programs such as the Thanksgiving Assembly, the Christmas Assembly, and the Spring Pop Concert. Choraliers helped to promote enrollment in vocal music at Rogers by singing at feeder junior high schools during the spring enrollment drive. To qualify for membership in Choraliers, students were required to try out during enrollment the previous year, at which time director, Mrs. Mary Louise Rose, chose the choir members. Singing with Choraliers was a great experience for Ropers who loved to sing, and who wanted to be involved with new friends in musical activities. . 1 ' ! , SPORTS ROPER BASEBALL Front Row L to R- Mark Shell. The 33 victories attained was the 2nd best season in Rogers ' history. (They had 8 losses.) Roper members of the Metro All-Star 1 st team were Larry Herrel (who was Player of the Year), Kirk Duggins, Russ Childers, and Randy King. Jimmy Overturf was on the Metro 2nd team. Three pitching records were set in the 1 982 season by Larry Herrel: Single season most W j ns _ 1 4 (which was a city record;) Career wins — 26 (which was tied to a city record-,) and the Single Season team record for most strike outs — 1 48. Coach Gordon Morgan had hopes that the 1982-1983 baseball team could repeat last season ' s fine performance and perhaps win the state championship and the conference title. The 1982-83 Roper Varsity Basketball Team, coached by Lonnie Spencer and Clifford Criddle, set its goals early in the season and by mid-season had made real progress toward achieving them. The basic strength of the team lay in its exceptional balance; and success followed quickly in January when the Ropers placed second in the East Central Tournament and came out on top as champions over ranked teams in the Union Classic Tournament. That was exciting, Coach Spencer said with pride. The team practiced daily from two o ' clock to four-thirty and played a busy 5A schedule against ranked teams from the city and surrounding area. In assessing the 1982-83 Roper team Coach Spencer had this to say; This team has fought very hard to become a good basketball team. They have faced a great amount of adversity in losing some of their teammates to academic and disciplinary problems, but 1 am proud of their efforts and happy for the success they have enjoyed. s E I E N Brent Keys Mike Anderson Gary Porter Larry Nitz Varsity Basketball Scoreboard Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Union Class Champions 2nd Place East Central Classic 71 Central 70 69 Edison 77 64(OT) East Central 65 80(OT) Hale 82 51 Central 53 63 Hale 47 78 Sapulpa 68 57 Owasso 46 89 Memorial 61 69 McLain 66 80 Union 60 54 Central 52 60 East Central 61 48 Edison 61 60 Muskogee 69 78 Broken Arrow 57 74 East Central 70 74 Memorial 50 69 McLain 73 74 Muskogee 75 77 Broken Arrow 64 65 (OT) Hale 63 61 Bartlesville 54 51 Edison 60 69 Oklah Sapulpa oma Six Conference 70 ions (6-4) Top to Bottom, L to R: Cheryl Stroud. ]oni Thurman Una Williams, Janell Pins. Coach Criddle felt that some of the strong points of his players were their quickness and the great attitude they had for the game.
