This year Miss Pam Smith was given this honor. She was crowned Miss Will Rogers XLIII in assembly on September 25, 1981. 4 Pam has been a very active member of the Rogers student body, and an outstanding student. She served as Secretary of the Senior Class, Varsity Head Cheerleader, Secretary of the National Honor Society, and member of the Lariat Staff. In addition at all these responsibilities, she maintained a 4.0 grade average as she prepared to attend college where she wants to study psychology. Pam was known by her teachers and friends as a young lady of high moral character, enthusiasm, spirit, and dedication. Her reign as Miss Will Rogers set an example for future queens to follow. The coronation took place on October 9, 1981, when she promised to uphold her position as Band Queen. She was much more than a beautiful queen; she was a part of the Golden Roper Band. Besides playing alto saxophone in the marching band, she played in the Concert band as well. Becky was also active in the N.H.S., French Club, and the Chorale. Becky was extremely proud to be our Band Queen. At first I was surprised, shocked, and then relieved. It didn ' t hit me that I was Queen until I was standing in front of the school. All of the Senior girls work hard and deserve to be recognized. I ' m very proud to represent the Instrumental Music Department, and I consider it a real honor to do so. I will cherish the memories always. ttes X Karen Headrick and Betty Jackson felt honored to be chosen attendants to Becky Vance, this year ' s Band Queen. First attendant, Karen Headrick, has been in Concert and Marching band for three years. This year, Karen was also the secretary of the Latin Club, which she has been a member of for two years. Second attendant, Betty Jackson, has also been a member of the Marching band for three years. This year, Betty was captain of the flag squads. She devoted many hours of her time to making new drills for the half-time shows. Betty was in the Latin Club, N.H.S., and was formerly a member of the track team. Both young ladies are very proud to represent the band in the finest tradition. In Switzerland, German, French, and Italian are spoken and although Fred speaks a little of each language, he speaks French most often at home. In Geneva, Fred attends Ecole Superieure de Commerence (Superior School of Commerence.) Where students change classes in much the same way we do at Rogers except in Fred ' s school students have all the same people in every class. At Rogers, students have many electives while at Fred ' s school students are enrolled in a standard curriculum which does not offer electives. In the United States Fred lives with the Stangeby family. His host brother is Pat Stangeby who is a senior. When Fred started school at Rogers he soon learned about such Roper traditions as the spirit chain and Homecoming. His favorite classes at Roger ' s are drafting and French. Fred has many interests such as photography, bowling, chess, and skiing. Fred says he misses snow skiing (which is hard to do in Oklahoma where there are no real mountains and little snow!) Fred joined the AFS program and came to America because he saw a lot on T.V. about the United States and he was curious to learn about the people and the language first hand. Fred says that he has not seen a lot of the U.S. yet but what he has seen he likes and hopes to see more before he leaves in July. It is worth coming here since I ' m learning a new culture, a new way of life, and new people. I ' m sure that I have a lot to learn now and hope that people around will learn something too! We soon became an active part of the mighty Home of the Ropers, and it grew to be our home away from home . By our junior year we were seriously working to raise money for our senior prom, a project which took many long hours of planning and hard work. We entered our senior year with the belief that we weren ' t just a senior class, but we were a family. Our senior year was a special year: the culmination of twelve years of classwork, friendships, growth, and belonging. We had shared our disappointments and successes together. We had collected many memories together. Now, graduation was upon us and in the flurry of getting ready for the prom, mailing commencement announcements, and thank you notes, being fitted for caps and gowns, and filling out admission forms, we suddenly realized that we were facing the end of our high school days and that we would soon confront the challenging world. The friends we had would always share a part of our lives in thought, and we would all remember the words, each happiness of yesterday is a memory for tomorrow . We ' ll be free in ' 83! rang throughout the halls during our sophomore year, but as our junior year progressed, feelings changed at the thought of leaving Will on the Hill. Our junior year found us continuing the hard work of fund raising. We sold pom poms and M M candy, raising little money but helping to boost school spirit. As the year grew shorter our funds grew larger as our sales increased. We sold Roper waving hands, key chains, stationary, and sweaters. But our biggest money-raiser was the spirit chain contest in which we took second place by raising $288. Hey Juniors! You re almost there! The class enrollment was about 490 students, with members coming from Anderson, Bell, Cleveland, Hamilton, and Wilson junior high schools. The class had a very busy year. It all started in September with the election of class officers. Soon the officers and their new sponsor, Mr. Duane Selvey, began fund raising projects which would build a class treasury that would pay for senior year expenses such as a prom and a class gift. Sophomores sold such things as refreshments at the Homecoming Dance, Class of ' 84 t-shirts, fire extinguishers, and World ' s Finest Chocolate. As May rolled around, sophomores excitedly looked forward to the ' 82- ' 83 school year when they would at last be juniors! PRINCIPAL £ A man whose office is always open to anyone. A man who struggles and fights to maintain the reputation of Rogers. A true, blue Roper. These are just a few of the many descriptions of Martin E. ; McGinty, our principal. Mr. McGinty has been the principal of Will Rogers High School since February of 1973. Prior to taking over the job as principal, he was a teacher, counselor, and assistant principal. He has a major in modern European history, and enjoys reading about this subject in his spare time. Mr. McGinty enjoys his job very much. When asked what I he liked most about his job, he replied, I love working with the fine young people, teachers, and parents in the Rogers ' community. The 1981-1982 Rogers Varsity Basketball team, under new leadership, stunned Roper basketball fans with a winning season. The Ropers charged onto the court in November with two returning starters and a new head coach, Mr. Lonnie Spencer. Coach Spencer came to Rogers with eight years experience in leading teams to victory. After a decade of losing seasons, Roper fans found it hard to get used to thinking of Roper basketball as something worth going out to see, but as the season progressed the crowds began to grow. Coach Spencer did not put as much stress on winning as on getting the best from each player. This let winning take care of itself. Fundamentals of the game, defense, and playing team ball were what Coach Spencer worked on most. These elements were the keys to success, and made the 1981-1982 Roper basketball season one of which all Ropers could be proud. SENIOR BASKETBALL MEN Lyndon Davis At 5 ' 9 and 158 lbs. NHS is an honorary society admitting only those students who have met the necessary academic requirements. Juniors inducted into the society must have maintained a 3.5 grade point average during grades nine and ten. A senior considered for membership must have a 3.25 grade point average in grades 9-1 1 . One of the privileges that senior members of NHS can expect is the honor of wearing a white stole imprinted with the National Honor Society emblem upon graduation. Membership in this society is an honor that students carry with them far beyond their high school years.
