NVith the planting of these shrubs the campus became a beauty spot and was no longer an expanse of prairie. In 1951 Cow Creek, which had once been a fayorite spot for many Rogerites-sprinters in sixth period gym, homeroom picnick- ers, nursery school children on nature walks, and many others- had a face lifting when Turner Park was graded and the creek was filled, to become another beauty spot adjoining our campus. The 1952 Lariat Staff hopes that the pictures on the following pages will remind you of the many happy hours you have spent at VVill Rogers. Here it is and here it has stood majestically for thirteen years. Those first thousands of dollars and many hours of labor made it, indeed, a magnificent building, but it took the Work and devotion of hundreds and hundreds of students, as well as many faculty members, to make it what it is today, our beloved Will-on-the-Hill. There have been many changes in the first thirteen years of its history and there Will continue to be many more changes, but it will always be loved by its students-a building with a proud history. It stood a lone sentinel on the prairie, in 19395 it continues to stand as a sentinel as the city has grown around it and surrounding homes have pushed back the prairie. On August 28, 1936 the Board of Education purchased ap- proximately tvventy-seven acres of land for the building site of Will Rogers High School. It was not until October 11, 1937 that the actual construction was begun. The completed structure was of- ficially accepted from the architect, June 30, 1939. The school was opened for the first classes September 11, 1939 and dedicated November 5 of the same year. X The cost of the land, building, and equipment was 51,398,089- Q 12. Approximately forty-five per cent of this cost was furnished KX . through the Public Works Administration. The need for added space became so pressing that construction 9 for an eight room Wing began in February, 19418, at the cost of S524-6,000.00. These rooms were first used for classes September X -N 6, 1949. During 1948 the campus landscaping was completed. Previous- ly several graduating classes had given shrubs for senior gifts to - .
