'M',,M,.cn,g 3 gs ,J QA, pawns an l urn' 15 ,6 VA. X QILLIABI Penn Adair was the name given by an Indian Chief to the famous cowboy, humorist, Will Rogers. Born in the Indian Territory, near Oologah, he grew up with the cowboys and Indians. He loved all animals and spent much of his time riding and roping cattle. One of his best friends, in his youth, was his pony Comanche, who later assisted him in his exhibition roping acts. Will's father, Clem V. Rogers, was one-eighth Cherokee Indian and his mother was a quarter blood. Will once wrote about his schooling: My father was pretty well fixed, and I being the only male son he tried terribly hard to make something out of me. He sent me to about every school in that part of the country. In some of them I would last three or four months. I got just as far as the fourth reader when the teachers wouldn't seem to be running the school right, and rather than have the school stop, I would generally leave? He liked every one with Whom he came in contact and became an Ambassador of Good Will as he traveled around the world, wisecracking about the most influential and important people. In movies he was just his own lovable, natural self. For the newspapers he wrote what he thought and quit when he had nothing to say. On the stage his wise- cracks and clever puns became an important part of his act. YVhether on the stage, in the movies, on the radio, or with a group of friends, Will Rogers made his audience feel that he was talking to each of them and had their problems at heart. Because of his generosity and kindness of heart the fortune which he made was given to needy people over the world. He provided numerous scholarships for young people who were unable to provide the means for their education. Although WVill was greatly appreciated and admired during his lifetime, his death was only the beginning of a fame far greater than any he had ever imagined possible. His statue now stands in the Hall of Fame in our nation's Capitol. I hope nobody ever tries to -write my life because I haven't started living. -WILL ROGERS f12I
