Will Rogers, We thank you for the privilege which is ours-that of bearing your name in honor and perpetuating it in memory. I was more proud to see my name in electric lights in my old home town on an institution built for service to the public, than I ever was to see my name in bright lights on the biggest theater on Broadway. -WILL ROGERS. ,A ,gl COPYRIGHT, 1950 S. Born in the Indian Territory, near Oologah, he grew up with the cowboys and Indians. He loved all animals and spent much of his time riding and roping cattle. One of his best friends, in his youth, was his pony Comanche, who later assisted him in his exhibition roping acts. Will's father, Clem V. Rogers, was one-eighth Cherokee Indian and his mother was a quarter blood. Will once wrote about his schooling: My father was pretty well fixed, and I being the only male son he tried terribly hard to make something out of me. He sent me to about every school in that part of the country. In some of them I would last three or four months. I got just as far as the fourth reader when the teachers wouldn't seem to be running the school right, and rather than have the school stop, I would generally leave? He liked every one with Whom he came in contact and became an Ambassador of Good Will as he traveled around the world, wisecracking about the most influential and important people. In movies he was just his own lovable, natural self. For the newspapers he wrote what he thought and quit when he had nothing to say. On the stage his wise- cracks and clever puns became an important part of his act. YVhether on the stage, in the movies, on the radio, or with a group of friends, Will Rogers made his audience feel that he was talking to each of them and had their problems at heart. Because of his generosity and kindness of heart the fortune which he made was given to needy people over the world. He provided numerous scholarships for young people who were unable to provide the means for their education. Although WVill was greatly appreciated and admired during his lifetime, his death was only the beginning of a fame far greater than any he had ever imagined possible. His statue now stands in the Hall of Fame in our nation's Capitol. I hope nobody ever tries to -write my life because I haven't started living. -WILL ROGERS f12I ,na L fu ' w g1. o gr Y 7' , f,wrI-rvllvuvnvy 0 ' 5 J ,,' Iv 'Mpw.w,mIrva.1.-rfleovvrg 1 . Take it to the Student Council-they'll fix you up in a minute, though they are busy with Student Directory Sales, conventions, selling cokes and refresh- ments at the dances they sponsor, and work- ing out the Point System. They are more than willing to accept sug- gestions for improvement throughout the school and to make it easier for anyone to contribute an idea, they placed a suggestion box in the main office. ' The Inter-School Council convention was held at VVill Rogers this year and approxi- mately SO0 visiting students and sponsors attended the meetings. Carlynne Lea, Rosalyn Ryan, Phil Miller, and Mr. George Kubik, sponsor, represented Will Rogers High School at the S.A.S.G. convention held in Charleston, West Virginia, in November. A project, originated by Jane Orman, was started this year to furnish the Vinita State Hospital with current magazines in good con- dition and, as usual, the student response was overwhelming. About 1700 magazines were sent to the hospital on the first delivery. A committee of art students, headed by Barbara Valerius, made about fifty posters to help promote the clean-up program sponsored by the Student Council. A slogan contest was held in connection with the campaign and members of the School Life staff won the one dollar prize for the best slogan submitted. Additional posters were displayed in the school cafeteria, listing prices of plate lunches, salads, milk, etc. The building and grounds committee, headed by Burt Holmes, saw to the replace- ment of broken furniture, mirrors, and other necessary items. C,-.J' wqfnmnnvlaavlewvvii 1 1 r N 4' -no' ' .A Football In the all city round robin game of Sept. 16, 1949, our blue-clads were victorious over VVebster by a 7-6 margin, but were unable to score on Central and that game ended in a 0-O tie. In their first game of the regular season at Skelly Stadium the following week, the Ropers rolled over the Okmulgee Bulldogs to a tune of 21-O. Our boys went into the Central game at Skelly flushed with victory and confident of an easy win over the Central team. But at the end of the game the Rogers fans read the 6 to O verdict on the score board in favor of Central. Bounding back after our defeat by Central, the Ropers proved they weren't out of the race yet, by traveling to Springfield and defeating the Bulldogs 20 to 7 in a non-conference game. This game was a good exhibition of team play. The next week it was a long journey to Fayetteville, Arkansas. The team was still hot and we smashed the Bulldogs Q6-15. The most thrilling game of the year came next as we met Muskogee. lt was a neck and neck race right up to the end, but the difference seemed to be Jerry Simmons and Ed lNlcAfee who sparked our team to a Q5- 19 victory, in perhaps the greatest game of their high school careers. At Sapulpa our Eleven rocked the Chief- tains l4- to O in a contest that was not really pictured on the scoreboard, for Sapulpa was game to the final gun. Ross Ausburn was a standout player, in a stand-out line. ln a position to take over the District 6-A lead if Central lost to Muskogee, we engaged VVebster at Skelly Stadium. Hopes were run- ning high at Rogers for this was the crucial game. The Warriors scored early in the first half, and our team seemed not able to get rolling until late in the second quarter. Time ran out before battling Jack Brady could gain a touchdown. The Ropers never were able to threaten again and the game ended 14-0, as the district championship slipped from our fingers. It's al-ways been best to let the people pick out their own hero. Don't try to force one on them, it's liable to lmvu the opposite effect sometinzesf' -WILL Rooms. ' Next the Bartlesville VVildcats invaded Skelly Stadium but were repulsed in a hard- 'fought battle. John Inkster, hard-hitting tackle, literally held up the line with his smashing tackles and his vicious blocking in what was probably his best game of the sea- son. For the last game of the year the Ropers journeyed to Oklahoma City to take on the Classen Comets. Although our boys fought hard, the breaks ran against us and we came out on the short end of a 6-13 score. Chosen for All-District team positions were: Bob Bolton, Ross Ausburn, John Ink- ster, Sam Loy, Jack Brady, and Jerry Sim- mons. John Inkster, Sam Loy, Ed McAfee, Jerry Simmons, and Bob Bolton, received alternate positions on the All-State Team. Ross Ausburn was selected for tackle po- sition on the All-State Team. He was also awarded High-School All-American-Honorable Mention. In my falls I am not fortunate enough to spill any royal blood, but its my blood and it's all l got. WRESTLING Will Rogers wrestling team opened its season by taking third place in the O. M. A. Invitational Meet. The Roper team produced four champions as Arlin Mareburger, John Welch, James Marshall, and Bob Phillipe came out on top in their respective weight divisions. In our dual meet with Webster, the Ropers got off to a good start but the Warriors came back to nose us out by a 21 - 17 score. The injury-ridden Ropers were unable to cope with a strong Perry team in the next match and gained only one fall and two ties. Following the Winfield, Kansas match, which was a 33-3 romp, the much improved Roper team con- tinued their winning ways by avenging an earlier defeat at the hands of Webster. They defeated the Warriors 20-15 and John Cunningham gained the only fall of the closely fought match. The following week the Ropers pulled a surprise by tying the undefeated Central Braves 15-15. There were no falls for either side but it looked like Central was pulling away until the last three matches when James Marshall, John Cunningham, and Keith Kelly decisioned their respective opponents. Bristow invaded our gym next and the hard fight- ing Roper mat-men ran up a tally of 31-5 to take the decision in every division but one. The Ropers then journeyed to Oklahoma City to meet the Classen Comets in a closely fought match. The Oklahoma City team was out in front by 3 points when it was over. Rogers closed their dual competition by meeting the Central Braves for the second time, when the Braves came out on top by a score of 19-14. Arlin Mareburger and Keith Kelley defeated their op- ponents to finish their dual competition without a loss. The state meet at Central closed the wrestling season. The Will Rogers team really made a good showing as they placed six men and took third place in the team standings. James Marshall won in the 154--pound class, the Ropers only state champion. BASKETBALL A SQUAD The Ropers entered season competition by journeying to Ada, Oklahoma in a non-con- ference game. Our boys were overwhelmed by the Cougars' superior height and failed to start the season with a win. Next on the schedule came the Classen Comets, a highly favored team. The courag- eous Ropers put on a great show as they nar- rowly missed knocking the Comets out of the undefeated role. Still after their first win, the Ropers met the Fayetteville Bulldogs on our home court. The boys were really hot as they trounced Fayetteville 50-36. Our next game was with our downtown rivals, the Central Braves, and with Dorsey Gibson and Ted Robertson leading the way, the Ropers emerged with a 47-4-5 victory. Al- though we led all the way by a good margin, Central came to life in the fourth quarter to make it one of the most exciting games of the season. The Will Rogers Invitational Tournament provided the next competition for the Roper basketball team. Some of the best teams in I:131:I the state compete in this eight-team tourna- ment and our team defeated every opponent until losing to Central in the finals by 2 points. Following the Christmas holidays, the Rop- ers started the new year right by trouncing a previously undefeated Van Buren team 52-410. Jack Cowan led the way with a scoring spree that netted him 21 points. Webster was the next victim to fall before the red hot Ropers. YVith Cowan and Mar- tin hitting from all angles, Rogers piled up 39 points while holding the Warriors to 27. The following week our team defeated Bar- tlesville for their third conference victory in as many starts. Except for Jack Cowan, the Roper reserves played the last three quarters and defeated the Wildcats 37 - 27. The Ropers continued their Winning ways by defeating Okmulgee 49 - 25 for their fourth straight victory. 'Cowan and Martin again led the way in scoring while Dorsey Gibson turned in a superb floor game. Next came one of the most important victories of the year as we de- feated the Central Braves 56-45, thus cinching the city championship and taking a firmer hold on the conference lead. It was a close game until the last quarter when Dorsey Gibson's accurate shooting en- abled the Ropers to pull away. It was close all the way but at the end of the game the Will Rogers team was out in front by 5 points. Next it was off to Muskogee for an impor- tant game with the Roughers and the Ropers really came through they defeated Mus- kogee 59 -48 and cinched u tie for the 6A conference competition with the Okniulgee Bulldogs at Okmulgee. It was a chance for Will Rogers to win the conference champion- ship but the Bulldogs won out in a close game. The regular season ended with a game at Fayetteville, Arkansas. It was a close game all the way but at the end the Fayetteville team had a one point margin despite Dorsey Gibson's 15 points. The regional tournament closed out compe- tition for the year. In the first pairings We D341 smashed Broken Arrow 66-32, with Cowan and Robertson making 23 and 18 points re- spectively. In the semi-finals we were match- ed With Sand Springs, perhaps the roughest team in the tournament. They proved too much for us as they put us out of the running by a score of 47-38. The Will Rogers baseball team, under the coach- ing of Harry Knapp, got off to a flying start in the spring of 194-9 by walloping Cushing 26 to 1. This proved to be only the beginning though as we defeated our next four opponents by lopsided scores. Central finally stopped the Roper streak at 5 straight, but only after a close, hard-fought game in which the Braves emerged victors by a one-run margin. The score was 6 to 7. The Ropers quickly got back into their winning ways by defeating the next 3 opponents on their schedule. The high point of this series of victories was a 13 to 0 shutout over Sapulpa. After losing another thriller to Central by a score of 1 to 2 the Ropers closed out regular season play with an 11 to 6 victory over Sand Springs and a 4- to 6 defeat at the hands of the Bartlesville Wildcats. Post season play began with the regional tourna- ment where we defeated Broken Arrow, Tulsa Cen- tral, and Cushing in quick succession. Then it was off to the state tournament where we emerged run- ners-up to the State Champion. The Ropers not only finished their season with a record of 15 victories and only 5 defeats, but also placed 3 players on the Oklahoma All State team. These 3 were Wally Knapp, outfielder, Eddie Stephens, pitcher, and Jim Yeager, alternate catcher. 1 l i SCORES Cushing 1 Rogers Sand Springs 3 Rogers Sapulpa 7 Rogers Muskogee 1 Rogers Bartlesville 2 Rogers Central 7 Rogers Cushing 4- Rogers Muskogee 3 Rogers Sapulpa 0 Rogers Central 2 Rogers Sand Springs 6 Rogers Bartlesville 6 Rogers REGIONALS Broken Arrow 6 Rogers Central 4- Rogers Cushing O Rogers STATE Bartlesville 3 Rogers Capitol Hill 4- Rogers Altus 9 Rogers 7 Football is great, but baseball is a professiong it is an art that you don t learn in any four years, just from September to December. -WILL ROGERS. fissj , Q, ,L.. c,.,.q . , 4, ,. .W WK-3 zsxiibifj ii' L., wsu, Q, K T 'g.
