We held a strong Webster team to a 0-0 score, but the Central Braves ran a score over and the Rogers-Central portion ended in a 7-0 score. The Ropers then played host to one of the strongest teams in the 6A District, Okmulgee. This team later represented the District in the championship playoffs. Rogers downed the Bulldogs 14-0 with scor- ing honors going to Larry Smittle, who scored both touchdowns. One of the most thrilling games ever to be played at Skelly Stadium was the night the Ropers handed the Central Braves their third straight loss to Rogers in as many years.'Central bowed to the ropers 8-7. Rogers first loss of the young season came at the hands of an inspired hardfighting Norman team who downed the Ropcrs 37-14. The next game played by the Ropers proved to be a costly one as an inspfred and very alert Muskogee team handed them their first District defeat 19-6. ir Front Row, left to right: Harvey Sollers, Jim McKenzie, Jim Brown, Larry Smittle, Jack Dunbar, Leon Sandel, Joe Norton, Clyde Goins. This they did very well coming home with a 12-0 victory. HBeat Joplin was next and a very strong team from the HShow Me State came down undefeated in seven games-Rogers 18, Joplin 13. Bartlesvflle was next on the Roper victory list, but not until both teams had thrilled the crowd several times during the game with some fine ball playing. Final score was 25-12. The sky was the limit as the Ropers were to meet the Webster Warriors. District 6A and city champion- ships were the Ropers goal as they tied into the Warriors on Skelly Lake, as the rain had fallen all day, and rained throughout the first half of the game. Maybe this was the reason, maybe not, but the Warriors won 14-0. Some think if this game had been played on a dry field the score might have been closer. il? Our grapplers opened the '47-'48 campaign with a two-day meet at O.M.A., which involved some nine teams from over the state. Coach Emil Schellstede's matmen came out third. The first intra-city meet of the season was dropped to Webster on the Webster canvas 21-14. We de- feated the Bristow Purple Pirates on their mat and buried them under an avalanche of forty points to a goose-egg for the hosts. The Ropers came home to entertain the Perry Maroons to the tune of 26-6. Then came the season's sec- ond meet with our friends across the river, thc Webster Warriors. This time the two squads clashed on the Roper home mat but the Websterites showed too much power and the hard-batting home team went down to a 22-11 defeat. The Central Braves, undefeated in forty matches, came out to the hilltop and, in spite of a fierce fighting blue and gold crew, copped their forty-first straight match 19-14. When Webster defeated Central, hopes were raised for avenging their former defeat, but to no avail, for the Braves again eopped us by a large margin, 23-9. In this final dual meet of the year 112-pounder Joe Seifried suffered his first defeat in two years and 15 consecutive dual meets. At the state grappling tourney at Webster the Westsiders took the championship for 1948 by a narrow margin. NVe took second place and pulled in two champs of our own, Smilin' Sam Latham, at 138 pounds, and Jay Tom Evans, at the 127 class. The Cougars were con- sidered one of the best teams in the state, but the Ropers proved too much for them. DICK SUTTER In their first home game, Fort Smith trav- eled in from Arkansas but limped back, after suffering a 47-17 defeat. lt was not until this game, that Ken Dobbs, the star from last year's state championship Muskogee team, began to hit his stride. All the sports writers had to say was, watch that red head go . . . Number three was racked up against their first conference foe, Bartlesvillc, and again they kept their score up in the forties, this time it was 45 to 25. The sunflower state gave the Ropers their next competition, as they traveled to Coffeyville to bring home a 28-15 victory. There was a lot of interest by some of the students, as they gave our quintet a large amount of good support with their cheering. The state capirol sent down a representative in the form of the Classen Comets, and with all their six-feet-and- over in height, they were out to take home a victory. It was a grueling battle, but just too much Dobbs for our foe, and the Ropers pulled BILL WHITE FRED CARLISLE away in the final stanze to emerge victorious, 31-28. A Our second conference victory came at the hands of the Okmulgee Bulldogs, as the local amine walked off with a 49-20 victory. This was the first game after the Christmas vacation, and the boys showed rhe Bulldogs that they hadn't had too much Xmas spirit to dampen their spirits. Next Came our arch rivals the Central Braves. As good as they thought they were, they were not as good as the Ropers, as the 34-31 score indicated. Dick Sutter, who had led the city in scoring up to and after this game, didn't find the range until the second half, but when he did, those fourteen points he tallied were too much for the bewildered Braves. A junior, Alton Mann, started at guard for Central, and collected 12 points before fouling out. There was just too much Rogers and not enough man in Central. Victory number nine, and a second win in the city contest, came at the hands of the Webstei' Warriors. Sutter got 23 and Dobbs 15, as our boys won 57-38, going away. Bob Wienecke started at center, and held Gorden Elsey, one of the Wai'rior stars, pretty well intact, while he scored 8 points himself. Last year's state champions, the Muskogee Roughers, always a strong team wherever they play, gave our team team little competition, as they bowed 39-28 with Sutter and Pitts leading the attack. Because he had already used his four years of eligibility, Ken Dobbs had to retire at the semester, and the Pawhuska encounter was the last game of his high school career. Ken finished strong by leading the Ropers with 23 points, to a 50-30 win over the powerful Huskies. Our seventh conference victory game at the hands of Bartlesville, as we played a return engagement with the Wilciczmts on their court. 40-33 was the final score, but we had to go all out to achieve that win. It was all Sutter in the second game with Okmulgee, as he accounted for 19 points in the 37-29 victory. Pitts was missing from the line-up, but B'll White and WieneL'ke both played good reserve roles to fill in his scoring gap. it had to happen some time, and so after 14 straight wins ,the Central Braves caught us on our off night of the season, to win 42-32. At the start of the second period, our boys caught fire, and began hitting from all angles. We pulled to within 2 points at one time, but the Braves finally snuffed the blaze by bucketing four straight field goals to tie us for the conference lead. In what was supposed to be our toughest remaining conference game on the schedule, Muskogee, the Ropers found them easy picking as Wliite and Wich let loose with ll and 10 points respectively, to give us a 37 to 30 win. fizsj 4 fin' 'lg 9' ai 3 R ' 5- ,J J, fl!!! nv l nlr 1' 'tr Q., ,i 5.8 Here Is Our B Squad Standing With Pride With Hard Practice They Keep in Stride On to the big city was the cry of irur blue clatls, as they made that II9 mile trip to Oklahoma City, where they played a two day engagement with Classen and Capitol Hill. The Comets were out to avenge an early season defeat, and did it, by knocking the Ropers off, 41-34. lt was our second loss of the season, what we hoped, the last. Across town, we played a tough team in the Capitol Hill Redskins, but we got by Sl-48. lt was practically the same team that played Muskogee in the finals of the state tournament last year, and we evened the loss they handed us in the semifinals. Witli a chance to take a share of the Oklahoma 6A crown for the :econd straight year, we played the XVebster Warricmrs, and they luelied out by dunking a free throw after the regular playing time had elapsed, winning 27-26. In our two games we had to make up, with liort Smith and Van Buren, we found them easy pickings, as Wfhite and Sutter each collected 36 points fer the two-day campaign, as we dropped the lfort Smith Grizzlies 42-35, and the Van Buren Pointers, SO-38. As good as our Ropers looked in those two ball games, they were bound to give somebody some trouble in the regionals. lt was regional time again and our team was ready to go from the opening whistle on. NY'e drew Clare! more for our first round foe, we easily subdued the Zebras, S7-25. This sent us to the semi-finals, and our old friends the W'ebster W'arriors were our opponents. lt was a hard fought game from the start, and we led at the half, but by the close of the game, they had knotted the score at 47-47. 'lihey went on to beat us S4-S3 in the overtime period, but not before we had played our hearts out. For five of the boys, Roger W'ieh, Bob W'ienecke, Bill W'hite, l,avine Pitts, and Dick Sutter, it was the last ball game of their high school careers, and they all made a fine record for themselves. if isixsi4i1'i'is,xLii is souan Front Row, left to right: Clarence La Plant, Charles Camfield, Don Cooper, Jimmy Woodcock, Charles Williams, Neil Layman, Jack Cowan. HI PARDNERS - We branded our last schedule cards on September Sth, as we headed for our last round- up. The greetings of Tenderfeet, Cowpokes, and Ramrods was quite an event at our first hoedown on Friday afternoon. Our first assembly meetin, saw the Tenderfeet corralled high on the shelf, peering over the edge trying to get a glimpse of those distinguished Senior Ramrods. We soon found that grub in our chuck wagon was beginning to cost more dough. Right in the middle of roping time, the Rustlers were corralled in 217, time 5:30. Guess why? Our new pigskin helmets and the crowning of our Queen, Jodie Gibson, must have been a good luck charm, as we made it three in a row when we lassoed the Central toters. Tenderfeet elected JoAnn Dorr and Virginia Latting for their attendants. Cowpokes chose Barbara Gordon and Sue Edkin, Ramrods attendants were Frankie Sanseverino and Nancy Churchwell. Lighting our way into the ranch house are our four new lamp posts at the gate given by the class of 1946. The Ramrods really thought they were out of this world the day seniors rings were passed out. First week in October we saw the Ramrods all dressed up in their best duds for senior pictures. The Bat was our first senior play, we'll long remember it for the castls fine performance. Jann Fike was crowned Sweetheart of the band at the Joplin game. Seven Student Council members rode the trail to Corpus Christi. Sadie Hawkins day found every avail- able man bound and gagged. At the Junior play, Hazel Kirke, our foremen came dressed up in the duds typical for the gay 90's. Curtis sales were held again this year and the Tenderfeet won with Cowpokes very close behind. fisej Memories ' it Ramrods took another step towards the great round-up when they measured for their caps and gowns. Our basketball team started off with a fine season opening with a victory over Ada. Christmas came with the decorating of the Christmas tree in the main hall of our ranch house. On returning, after the holidays we were surprised to see our ranch house grounds taking on the new look. Newest classes were in Driving lessons given to Cowpokes, and Ramrods in a fancy white buckboard. Cowhands took their first step towards becoming Ramrods when they ordered their senior rings. There was a great stampede for the ninth annual Round-Up Among Our Souvenirs. Our Tenderfeet gave a fine performance in their play i'Growing Painsf, All the Ram- rods switched their regular duds for costumes at their 'ACome As You Aren't party. A big surprise came when we could no longer go out the northeast door and found the ground dug up to begin adding eight new rooms to the corrall. Now, as we head toward our last Round-Up, planning the Senior breakfast, banquet, vespers, and commencement, we learn that Mrs. Catharine Probst is leaving our ranch house at the close of the year. So, goodbye Pardners, our last round-up is about over. THE LARIAT STAFF. f' + WK .
