However, through the combined efforts of the school and its patrons, the Lariat Staff held a successful rummage sale which helped considerably in lessening the expense of the book. Our time and effort will be justified if, at some future time, the pictures and snapshots of our friends will recall to us the pleasant memories of our high school days. With this in mind, we give you the l9f17 Lariat. 1 1 O THE FOOTBALL team who, through their loyalty and good sportsmanship, have been an inspiration to the school and to the student body, we dedicate this book. Through hard work and self-sacrifice the boys on the football squad have achieved an inspiring and enviable record we' can all be proud of. After the loss of their fullback, Henry Frnka, jr., the squad became the Twelve Brothers, instead of the Eleven Brothers as they were formerly called-eleven actually playing, with the memory and spirit of Henry following them into every game. We owe 'not merely applause to these boys but we should follow their example of good sportsmanship, fair play and the will to work hard for whit they want. 13 AQLLQAZZJ , wh g!47L ' 5, 5 ,QZZL 07-uf - 2' I i 522 QZZWMMJZAJ WMM ,M Wy?f9l A,!lE.,g7edMf THE SCHOOL ,,ff Q,16fMaf Zilla, Jim .1 Q77 yang? When Dr. C. Benton Manley left Will Rogers High School for another post, the school lost a good friend, but gained another in his successor, A. O. H. Setzepfandt, Whose untiring efforts and cooperation have made him popular with the staff and the entire student body. Now that the war is over, the boys who postponed their schooling to fight for the right of free education have returnedg more than forty of them are at Will Rogers this year, getting their high school diplomas. i Q . Q H l IN MEMCRIAM 9 HENRY FRNKA, JR. 1929-1946 Henry, or Big Boyu as his friends knew him, was an all-round athlete, a conscientious student, and, most of all, a real friend to everyone. He participated in football, basketball, and track, and lettered in all three sports. When he was not play- ing or studying, he put his time on school activities. All those who came in contact with him will re- member his keen sense of fairness, good sportsmanship, and the fighting spirit that would never permit him to give up. He learned from his father what team work meant. He had learned from his mother what it meant to be a gentleman. . . . leader of young men, excellent student, team man, great blocker, typical example of all that is good and honest in the Youth of America . . Henry, our Roper fullback, was fatally injured in the last minute of play in the Rogers-Central game, while carrying the ball for the school he loved. 24 is l l El SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Seated left to right: Miss Lola B. The primary aim of the Lariat staff is to compile, organize, edit, and present a new and better school annual each year. This is no small task, and the work results not only in a Lariat worth keeping but, also, in the staff members gaining much valuable first-hand information about how to get a book ready for publication. They also find out a number of surprising facts about Will Rogers I-Iigh School that other students may miss. Iileeted during the first of the school year, the Iiditor David Lomax and assistants Wanda Finch and jane Proctor have seen this year's Lariat to its com- pletion. Miss Caroline Copeland is sponsor of the yearbook staff. U1-1-1-R Plcriuiug I'lI'0lIf Row, lefl io rigbf- Nancy Breckenridge, Shirley Dalphon, Betty Barge. Jeanne Devero, Carolyn King, Pat Fowler. Y - I I Student Council The purpose of the Will Rogers Student Council is to advance high standards of educa- tion, to create and maintain a wholesome understanding among students, to develop closer cooperation with the community, to par- ticipate in the administration of student affairs, to promote commendable social activity, and to secure all the benefits of free public schools. One of the first projects of this organization was to raise enough money to Hnance the Inter-School-Council convention, send five delegates representing our Student Council to Shawnee, and still have enough balance in the treasury for next year's Council. Their way of obtaining this currency was Round- Everyone was all excited, busy getting into their costumes, and hurrying to get on stage, but in spite of all this the show still came out a huge success. Yes, it was the eighth presenta- tion of Will Rogers all-school production, The Round-Up. The work, however, didnlt fall on only the participants, but mostly on the Round-Up Board. The Board met every Week and held tryouts to determine who would be in the show. They watched dance choruses, dramatic scenes, individuals, etc. and had a hard time choosing the cast. through sponsoring two sales, the sale of student directories and school pennants. Both sales went over with a bang and here's hoping these activi- ties are repeated next year. The Inter-School-Council is a representative organization of the three Tulsa high school Student Councils. It is composed of four repre- sentatives from the Councils of Webster, Cen- tral, and Rogers. Its purpose is to promote better relationship between the three schools. To further their purpose they organize the Inter-School-Council Convention every year. Each year one of the high schools sponsor the convention and this year Will Rogers had the Convention, April the 18th. Up Board The show, centered around famous paintings, was called Accentuatea' Arif, Student director was Joan Marks, Dick John was president of the board, Jeanne Dolphin, secretary, Don Linde, director of music, Sammye Whaley, director of costumes, Pat Fowler and Howard Edwards, co-directors of dancingg Wallace Wilkerson, director of comedy, Kenneth Williams, continuity, Jo Anna Apple, art, Pat Richmond and Delbert Thomas, publicity. Mrs. Catharine Y. Probst directed the show. 85 ?2ICIi,'. John Black, who is sponsor and director of the club, returned to this job last year after serving with the Coast Guards. Each stagecraft boy receives one credit for 120 hours of work. In addition to their work during the school day, the members can often be found hard at work after 3:30 p. m. on some important project. We are grateful for their services and pleased to sec that they are an eflicient and well-organ- ized group. This Affair presented a not too accurate pre- view of things to come. Will Rogers dealt Okmulgee a devastating 34-0 defeat in their first conference game at Okmulgee. The next game was with Central. This game undoubtedly will be remembered as one of the hard- est-fought and most eventful ever played in Tulsa. The fast-moving Roper offense ripped the Braves lines to hold a 14-0 advantage at the half. The game ended 14-7 and the record book recorded the second Rogers victory over Central in as many years. The Ropers next game brought a convincing 20-0 defeat over the Sand Spring Sandites. Will Rogers continued their winning ways at the expense of the Ponca City Wfildcats. The Ropers played heads-up ball all evening and virtually had things their own way. Rogers first loss of the season was suffered at the hands of an inspired Sapulpa team. The Chieftains did everything right this night to bump the injury-laden Roper team, 20-0. This game brought to a close a string of 22 consecutive regular season games. The Ropers journeyed to Joplin, Mo., the following week to bounce back from defeat impres- sively 33-6. i XVill Rogers subdued a stubborn Bartlesville team 13-6 in the next encounter. The end of the regular season found Central, Rogers, and Sapulpa tied for first place in district and conference championship. The team to represent was chosen by drawing. Then they traveled to Arkansas for two games. The first, a game with Fort Smith, the Roper five won to the tune of S4-343 the second was at Van Buren with the Bruins victorious by a count of 43-34. At their next home game, the squad made up for earlier defeats tromping the Coffeyville live by a decision of 41-29. Avenging their early defeat by the Van Buren team, our cagers squeezed out a vietorv on their home court by a slim point of 31-30. The first conference game of the season was a victory achieved over the Okmulgee Bulldogs on our court with the Ropers emerging vic- torious with a wide margin of 42-14. Next was the all-important contest with the Central Braves. It took an overtime period to do it, but the Ropers thoroughly shellacked the downtown Eve, 46-40 on the Braves' floor. 3425. Outcome of the game was not certain until the final stanza, but then our boys started scoring from all angles to erase any possible thought of a Wfarrior victory from the minds of the spectators. Winniiig conference games became a habit by this time, so when the Ropers journeyed to Sapulpa it was no exception. Rogers came out on the long end of a 33-23 count. One of the toughest games of the season was put up by the Muskogee Roughers, but they could not match scoring power with the Ropers and the result was 32-29 in the Ropers' favor. Playing an inspired Bulldog quintet, the Ropers found the going a little rough but still managed to bring home the bacon with a 35-28 victory. This was the game in which lWcAfee sprained his ankle during the second half. It had to happen some time and it did when the Rogers quintet traveled to Bartlesville. There they lost their first conference game 30-28, with the absence of McAfee, one of our star guards. Funny, it was our thirteenth game of the season. Beating Central was just the thing to do this year, so the Ropers again trampled the Braves in an overtime contest 34-32. The victory clinched at least a tie in the city crown. ROGER WICK DICK SUTTER LAVINE PITTS If Rogers Team Put Them In The Basket It was nothing short of murder when Rogers met Bartlesville on their home court. With vengeance in their eyes, the Ropers ran over an outclassed Wiltlczit team 57-23. Coach Alex- ander played everybody who was suited up in this contest, but still Bartlesville was unable to score. Pawhuska provided the Ropers with their next win of the season. a 47-38 affair, in which the team waited until the final period to really let go with their scoring punch. Rogers next played host to Sapulpa and thumped their guests 49-32. This victory gave the Ropers at least a cinch tie in the Okla- homa Six standings. Our cagers, battle for the championship of the conference was slowed down when they met the Muskogee five again on their home court. lt was a close-fought contest all the way, with the Roughers on the long end of the score, 43-37. The Ropers were stopped again, when they met the Webster hve. This game was the hnal conference game of the regular season and the Wfarriors succeeded in achieving a 36-24 de- cision. Shortly after this the Ropers scored another Hrst in the all-city meet by defeating Central by 41 points and Webster by 56. November 23 brought victory to the Ropers when they traveled to Stillwater, where they pulled into the lead, scoring 42 points over Central. . The season was climaxed at Norman when the team became the first to break Central's nine year,s state record. Rogers placed first with 214 points, followed by Central with 168, Webster with 155, Classen with 127, Stroud with 118, and Capitol Hill with 115. Conference and State meet scoring gave Rogers second in the Regional and Conference meets, and fourth in the State meet held at Norman last May. At the close of the 1945-46 season, the Roper netmen were forced to lay down their rackets because they lacked courts on which to practice. Last Fall, however, courts were provided on the school parking lot, and Coach Endres began the task of building a new team. Serving as a nucleus for this year's team are three returning A-squad men: John Greenstreet, Hugh Gallagher, and Jack Staiger. Promising newcomers are Dick deWzzttevill,e, and Jim Maxley, sophomores, and Lucian Franks, a junior. Mmm. Qmem r .- 'SK MEMORIES We thought it would never come, but finally it's almost here. You can tell by the blissful faces of the Seniors that Commencement is just around the corner. As usual, opening day rolled around too soon, finding us greeting old friends and meeting new ones, among them our new principal, Mr. Setzepfandt, and standing in line to change schedules, to eat lunch, and one little innocent kid asked if she was supposed to stand in line to get in class. New Sophies wereywandering aimlessly around the hall-but all the new Rogerites weren't Sophomores --ruptured ducks were a common sight around these parts, as the veterans swelled our enrollment past any previous year. First assembly of the year found the Soplis, perched high on the shelf, trying to peer over the swelled heads of the Seniors, proudly occupying their first floor thrones. Then came the day. The place was Room 217, the time was 3:35, That's right-DETENTION opened its arms to all wayward delinquents. As the last yells died away from the all-city foot- ball game, a new and entirely different yell arose from Miss Trusty's office- Senior rings are here! and highly dignified Seniors went around proving to skeptical friends that they were really actually Seniors. Okmulgee went down in defeat as the Ropers played their first out-of-town football game, and then the game of the year-and the Central Scalper shirt remained for another year in our trophy case with a 14-7 score emblazoned on it. That morning before the game some Centralites came over and the 13 usual challenges were exchanged between the two schools. Her Majesty, Miss Will Rogers VIH, in the person of Sammye Whaley, was crowned by Bill Riggs in a lovely coronation assembly, while Jimmy Duncan did the honors at the game, looking dazed but happy. Attendants to the queen were: Seniors, Kathryn Copple, and Claris North, juniors Jodie Gibson and Frankie Sanserverinog and Sophomores, Donna Jane Bryan and Barbara Gordon. The trip to Muskogee found the Dudes and the Ranglers boarding buses along with the team and the band. W'e had a victorious season-,til we met Sapulpa, and then wc lost the championship draw to Central. Pat Richmond won the band queen crown, with J. D. Peach-Fuzz Highfill rescuing the shako when it fell. The 1947 Round-Up Board went around with art on their brains in preparation for Accentuated Art, the production of the year. Try-outs started-and dance choruses were a familiar sight in the auditorium lobby as students practiced from dawn to dusk per- fecting routines. Dead bodies and the frenzied cry of Charge!,' monopolized the auditorium while Arsenic and Old Lacef' the Senior class play, was packing the crowds in. Then the Junior class play, Dulcy, continued the Rogers tradition of Hrst-class hits. Wasted film and discarded flash-bulbs character- ized the taking of faculty pictures for the Yearbook --they were more trouble than the student body pictures-huh, Miss fBlankj. 7 As usual, the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance was well attended-and brought out the hidden personalities of Rogers students. The Cow Creek Cuties serenaded their Hairless Joes in the time-honored Dogpatch style. The picture of Will Rogers and the Great Rubinoffn will long be treasured by the students-as will the memorable concert and talk so graciously rendered by the one and only Rubinoff and his . . . medal. The Student Council are busy little bees this year selling the grand Will Rogers pennants and those handy little blue books-four Student Directories- with the addresses and telephone numbers of our favorite O.A.O. and P.C.'s fOne-and-Only's and Prince Charmings to you uninitiatedj . . . The only catch is that teachers now have ready access to parents . . . and vice-versa. The Annual Senior Christmas Tree in the front hall heralded the arrival of good old Santa-and that wonderful vacation that sent sighs of relief echoing thru' the halls and freed our home-work-crazed brains for a glorious two weeks. The ordering of Senior announcements and the measuring of caps and gowns made all Seniors realize that they were really well on the road to graduation, but with the issuing of semester grade cards, the majority of us realized that we'd been sidetracked. Then along came the annual Curtis magazine sales -with the Sophomores coming out first-as usual. And right about that time, the Yearbook class held a rummage sale. Both events proved what grand salesmen we have out here at Will-on-the-Hill. Basketball games occupied the attention of Rogers students, and we chalked up two wins over Central's quintet, besides beating Van Buren, Fort Smith, Sapulpa, Okmulgee, Bartlesville, Webster and others. The wrestling teams came along about this time using the various holds ffor wrestling only??j. Back from the navy, Mr. Schellsrede took over the team and under his direction they have been improving steadily. just about the most memorable event of the year was Mr. Setzepfandt leading yells and cheers in the pep assembly. And the snake dance afterward raised the attendance at Hillcrest for was it Vinita,j as skinned knees and broken ankles piled up for treat- ment. The Sophomores fbless their little pointed headsj gave Don't Take My Penny as their event of the year, and proved by their performance that they could hold their own with the Juniors and Seniors. We hate to end before we can, tell you all about the Commencement, the Banquet, the Prom, and all of the other activities that mark the end of our three years at Rogers ,but we have to get the book to press early so everyone can have a Lariat to sign before school closes. Well, Seniors, your high school days are over, but we know that youlll never forget the grand times youive had here-always remember Rogers-and know that her very best wishes for your happiness and prosperity go with you through your life.
