THE 1945 Z ,,,.f 0 ci ZAZKZ Z fx K ore 1 vo rc E SINQZLRIQLY HOPE our classmen of Will Rogers High School will enjoy this Lariat as we have enjoyed planning it. Because of the paper shortage we have had to cut down on the number of pages in the yearbook, and all organization write-ups had to be ommitted - but weyre hoping the quality will make up for the lack of quantity. The memories connected with the pictures and snapshots of our friends will recall to us in the future the rare treasures of those never-to-he-forgotten high school days. So we give to you the 1945 Lariat. cd IN MEMORIAM Paul JR Clifforcl Charter lhunt Lovejoy Water K. FDDTB LL The Will Rogers Ropers finished this year with the most successful season in the history of the school. The Ropers opened their season with the all-city game in which they beat Central 14-7, and bowed to a strong Welastei' team 0-7, in a thriller that saw the Ropers prove themselves as the surprising team of the tilt. Rogers second game of the season saw us on the Skelly turf in the highly anticipated game with Central. We had hoped to win this game as we had last year, but all was to no avail as the Centralites emerged the victors 20-6. However, we feel that had this tilt been played two weeks later the outcome probably would have been different. XVe had expected Sand Springs to be an easy victory, but the Sandites surprised us some- what, and made a close game of the fumble marred contest. However, the team rallied in the closing minutes to punch over a single game-winning touchdown. Next Rogers victory came at the expense of the Hominy Bucks. Wfe soundly trounced them 41-19, but it would have been a much closer contest if it had not been for the Ropers better training and superior condition. The Ropers were next destined to ride roughshod over the Muskogee Roughers, which they did, downing them 20-0, with Bob Hively taking scoring honors with all three touchdowns. Once again our team proved too much for their opponents of Sapulpa who were believed to be much stronger than they. Due to a muddy field the game was not high scoring with both teams making a single touchdown, but Rogers converted winning the fray 7-6. And win they did by a score of 24-7 to break a two year tie. This was supposed to be a well matched game but our boys proved too much for the Grizzlies. This year's Bartlesville game was a real thriller, but a cold one. Although We were at a disadvantage with two of our starters on the bench We pulled through and the final count was 7-0. The Rogers - Webster game was a hard fought ball game all the way with Ivo Nelson taking Jim Semke,s place at full back and doing a great job. Wfith Jim Storts back to Captain the team We managed to trim NVebster's gallant Warriors 12-6. That winds up this resume of our 1944 football season but five boys who lettered on the gridiron this year will be back again next fall. They are Bill Garner, Juniorg and Bill Bloom- field, Bill Riggs, Jim McKenzie, Jack Bolinger, and Henry Frnka, Jr., Sophomores. BASKETBALL The Roper cagers opened their season this year by downing the Sandites of Sand Springs, with a one-sided score of 58-23, on our home court as eleven Rogers boys scored in the game. Possibly the two hardest games of the year to lose were those immediately following the opener. Rogers was tripped by one of the fine teams of the state on the Roper court as they bowed to Oklahoma City Classen 25-23. The game ended with the fourth period rally of our quintet falling short by those two small points. With the game tied when the gun sounded, a lone Central tally in the overtime turned the tide and the Ropers were downed for the second time in the season. The Webster-Rogers game came out as expected and the Ropers finished with a total of 46 to Webster's 27. Webster was never able to offer a real threat during the ball game. Rogers cagemen won two victories in a row when they played Shawnee one night and Sapulpa the next. The Shawnee game ended 46-31 and Rogers downed Sapulpa in a rough-and- tumble game to the count of 29-11, on the Sapulpa court. Travelling to Bartlesville for the next encounter Rogers was able to come home with the bacon. The outcome of this game was never in doubt and the Ropers cam through with a 38 - 26 victory. Next came a thriller as Rogers basketball team barely de- feated a strong O. C. Central quintet 29 - 26 in an overtime game on the Rogers court. The Ropers were defeated by a strong Muskogee quintet on the home court when the latter romped to a 34-25 victory. KENNETH I.Aww11.I. The Central Braves captured the city crown when they scored a 39 - 25 vic- tory over the Rogers Cagers on the eastside court, February 2. February 6, the Sapulpa Chieftains invaded the Roper court and were easily beaten by a score of 31 - 17. The Rogers quintet downed the Okmulgee Bulldogs twice in a row . . . February 9 and 13. The first game was 41 - 27 led by Luckhart with 12 points. The second was 39 to 16. The Ropers rolled over the Warriors 42 - 26 in the second game with them this season. In the early minutes of the second quarter the second and third teams Went in for the Ropers and kept the lead easily for a fine finish. Will Ropers was defeated for the second time by the Rough- ers on their court. This seemed to be another cold night for the Ropers. This and the ineligibility of two of the first string led to defeat. Rogers ended their season of basketball this year with a final game against Sand Springs. The Ropers took an easy victory over the Pryor five with Luekhart, Fette, and Hively leading the Roper quintet to a 43 - 17 victory. Although the Pryor boys drew first blood the Ropers were never in a bad spot during the full 32 minutes of play. On the second evening Will Rogers defeated the Drumright Oilers in one of the most thrilling games of the tournament, by a narrow margin of 36 - 34. With two wins the Ropers went into the final game of the regionals, against Claremore after the Zebras had eliminated the Central Braves. The first half scoring was low due to the determined defenses of both teams. The Ropers were ahead in the first quarter 4 - 3, and Claremore in the second 8 - 7. In the third quarter Claremore scored and took a big lead with the score 20 - 14. The Ropers five then staged a sensational rally in the fourth quarter narrowing the Claremore lead to one point and were threatening to score when the final gun sounded, with the score remaining 27 - 26. Last spring the Will Rogers track team made a good showing for themselves by capturing first place in all meets throughout the season. The season got under way when we edged out Central High School's track men sixty-three and one-half to fifty-four and two-thrids in a dual affair at Skelly Stadium. The following week the Ropers showed their ability as a well rounded team by taking the first annual T. U. relays, although no team trophies were presented at the T. U. meet Rogers placed first with thirty-three and one-third points. April 22, brought victory to the Ropers when they defeated the local rival high school, and emerged champions of the Oklahoma Six Conference. Following their triumph over the local high schools, the Ropers journeyed to Norman to participate in the state meet, where they again won first place with a large number of Ropers ranking among the highest who entered. Bobby Jack Stuart won the 100 and 220 plus helping bring victory in many relays. Stuart was high point man at the state meet scoring fourteen and one-fourth points. To celebrate the Rogers Ropers returned to hand a defeat to the Central Braves in a dual meet, the last of the season. The Roper net men faced the prospects of a successful 1944-45 season with five returning lcttermen, Richard Barnhill, Bob Mapes, Pat Sutter, John Endres, and Richard Reisher, all seniors. Although the scheduling of matches was made even more difficult this year than last because of the transportation problem, the team had hopes for scheduling meets with Central, O.M.A., Shawnee, Bartlesville, and Muskogee, and also, of entering the Oklahoma Six Conference meet. Coach Endres had a host of promising new talent among the juniors and sophomores. They are Tommy Roberts, Buddy McCune, Don Burns, John Schwcnker, Maurice Duncan, and Louis Lundquist, all juniors, Bob Anderson, Jim Unruh, John Greenstrcet, and Hugh Gallagher, all sophomores. The team had two matches last fall with Central, losing both with scores of S-4, 6-S. The boys practiced on the Tulsa University courts this spring on their own until Coach Endres could take over after his duties as B team basketball coach were over. At the time the Lariat went to press the team had not played any of its spring matches, and the spring schedule was not complete. GIRLS' SPORTS PAGE 105 DEAR BUDDY: Another year has passed since we last wrote, and Oh, the things we have to tell you! Everything started much the same with the new-but dignified-seniors gathering in the lobby for their schedule cards. The following days were even more confusin' but not amusin' to the in-between juniors and the know-it-all sophomores. None of us were satisfied with our schedules so we spent the first week of school in the line from the office to 506. Lines lines, lines! We seem to dote on them. They must have had Hershey bars at the front of that cafeteria line the first day, but being the last in line we never really found out! We waited for forty minutes and finally went back to class . . . we got some lunch the next day, though, by golly-what we have to go through here at home! We had the most wonderful school mixer that first Friday, Buddy. Everyone was there getting acquainted and renewing old acquaintances. We missed the old familiar faces we'd seen just last spring--so many of you fellows are now overseas. We really miss you! Detention started once again on September the eighteenth. Oh, that familiar 217! Need we say more? Buddy, the night arrived-what we'd been looking forward to all summer. Our first football game! ! ! It was the all-city game. Each school had a victory and the sportsmanship couldn't have been better. Later on our team played Central-and lost. But cheer up, Buddy, it was our only loss of the season. Our senior rings finally came . . . there we were a couple blocks down from the jewelry store, but they certainly were worth the waiting. Maybe we werenit exactly sure before, but now we know we're seniors and can prove it! ,Course, there was quite a lot of interchanging of rings-you know how that is? ? Introducing Her Majesty, Miss Will Rogers VI-Su Derrick! We had a beautiful crown- ing ceremony of a beautiful queen. The football was thrown and made a perfect landing into Queen Suis hands. That night at the game David Powers, captain, did the honors. The seniors really gave out with a Wonderful presentation of Sorority Housef, Kinda lop-sided with forty girls and nine boys . . . what a man-shortage! Did we say we miss you? We repeat again and again and again-brother, we do! At our annual Will Rogers Memorial Asscinbly a personal friend of Will,s, Dr. Frank W. Hart, talked to us about him. It was perfect. Weire so proud our school is'named for such a man. Fort Smith game-and wotta game! We got it by the grapevine: Our football heros plus a few PLUTOCRATS bus-ed over-but they had to walk to F. S. Some sort of red tape about buses not leaving the state. Brrr! Boy, was it cold. A fire drill in sub-Zero weather-and those poooor lasses in gym suits . . . it always manages to ring right in middle of something important. The boys across the hall didn't mind at all-they were on the firset question of a science test. And speaking of cold weather, Buddy, you should have been at the Bartlesville game. We all managed to get their by hook, crook, or bus. The Ranglers, Dudes, Student Council, and private individuals all rented buses and there were just scads of people. We really yelled out our lungs, and we overflowed the bleachers . . . wead make a safe guess at three hundred. That's just about the record for an out-of-town game. As always it was a success with the sopho- mores, those hard-working, pace-setting little angels, coming in ahead. We don't know why but they always manage that! During the half of the Rogers-Webster game Band Captain Bob Gimlin crowned CUmmm!j our new Band Queen, darling Judy Wallace. After the game the girls dragged the stronger sex Ctee-heej to our annual Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. Everyone was dressed fit to kill in plaid shirt, blue jeans, and good rummage sale matterial. Will Rogers' gym became Dogpatch for one evening-and sech goin's on! Round-Up time again. Tryouts started in November and tl1e people with wings on their feet tried their luck first. Later the warblers got their chance. Rember all the fun backstage, the beautiful costumes on the chorus girls. We have a new transparent curtain, given us by this senior class, and the effect was really something. Practice, practice, practice, It was tough goin', Buddy, but we made it and really put on a swell show. It was The G. I. Dream built around you. Buddy, here's something to show how we at Rogers have been doing our bit to hasten your return. December the first Will Rogerswas awarded the Schools-at-War-Flag for hav- ing over ninety per cent of the student body buying war stamps each month. We were the first senior high school in Tulsa to win this honor-that's sumpin,, huh? You should see all the tin cans and scrap paper we brought all year-heaps and heaps of it! The Inter-School Council Convention began at Webster this year. Special buses brought us back to Rogers for a buffet supper, after which we played Webster in basketball-and won. We closed the Convention with a super dance in the cafeteria. The first day of the new semester was minus a lot of familiar faces around the halls. Many of the students graduated, and quite a few of the boys left for the armed services. The whole school wept over the departure of the senior class president, Robert Shelton. The basketball games were too important to miss. No one missed the one we had with Central out here. Standing Room Only, downstairs and balcony. Guess everyone in town was there. We hope you received your School Life regular-like. We all kept busy getting them ready for you. In fact 403 was in pretty much of a dither all year. We just must put in this little plug for the faculty . . . the science department was in pretty much of a mess for about six weeks hiring, substituting 'n substituting for the substi- tutes-altogether there were five different teachers, but weire plenty all straightened out now. You remember Miss Christia Allender - - er - -ah - - Crane it is now? She ups and gets hitched over Christmas vacation! Maybe you remember Fred Bennett, science teacher, he has returned to our dear ole Alma Mater to take Mrs. Crane's place. Gee, Buddy, we wish the Lariat didn't have to go to press so soon. We,d love to tell you about the next senior class play, and Senior Week and Vespers and Commencement, and the Junior-Senior Prom-and everything. But we,ll keep writing, and you do the same. All our love, THL LARIAT GANG. PAGE 107 Qlggiy' ' .fb-4 K, fav,-.r ,' ffece' I ,777g4,.,,V Q 4 ,,-h .1 f if , ,af . vf A Zi fb f,4fWU f 1 ,JJ I f ' 1 .1 A J fir, lj?
