' ,,a,1wzJsofe17 ' QMCZ-Lewfdoa! v Will Rogers, world-famous Oklahoma humorist, for whom this school is named, was a typi- cal American. He was a friend to all, from penniless vagabonds to stately kings. Symbolic of democratic opportunities, Will Rogers rose from the simple life of a cowboy to become a world- renowned person. Even in his humor he was con- siderate of others. He once said, You can always kid a big man. I generally hit the fellow on top because it's not fair to hit a man when he's downf, He was like that always, ready to serve the people and help them get a laugh at the serious side of life once in a while, rather than striving to become famous. Unselfishly Will Rogers gave freely of his time and money to help others. It was here they began and ended their high school careers. Entering as sophomores in September, 1959, these stu- dents have helped to organize the activities and establish cus- toms for future classes. Through participation in the school activities they have brought about a happy feeling of friend- ship and cooperation among their fellow students and with the faculty. It is to them with their spirit of loyalty, perseverance, and coo eration that this Lariat is res ectfull dedicated. P P Y 2 i X 3' J? in Q G W V' 1' it 4 2 li 3' , fi ,. Among the students were a number who had entered Tulsa schools for the first time, having moved here because of Tulsals defense projects. Due to the increase in enrollment and a loss of teachers who entered various phases of defense work, four teachers were added to the staff. , , jaw 1 aff? pg . f jeg WMMLW WWW M c y Q-d 'mmgmlwwwaew ,, W, :Z my W My Some portions of the building. including the shops, have been opened twenty-four hours a day, gixing adults as well as students an opportunity to em-oll in courses to better equip them to enter into defense service. The buzz of saws, the whir of generators, and the click of typewriters blend together with hundreds of other sounds in the hum of a day's work in Tulsa's newest senior high school. Offering approximately one hundred different courses. this school is one of the many of our great land which is doing its part for the education of t0m0rr0w's citizens. 1 e ff t , N l This 1942 Lariat symbolizes more than pleasant memories of school days. It is a cross-sectional view of the loyalty and coopera- tion that has been predominant among the students during the three years of Will Rogers High School's existence. More than ever, in this time of war, the students and teachers have cooperated to do their utmost for national defense. Organizations, activities, and classes have set up programs to better equip the students to enter into defense Work or to help in some manner. In this hook you will find pictures of students Who, with their loyalty and cooperation, will spur their country on to greater heights when they are in the saddle of government. The seniors have here stated the place they hope to occupy in the professional world. Today they are the leaders of youth, tomorrow leaders of men. is Qi? 33.i..M,, ln K N A if 'QF meal' -...q km in f'T d A C XI I rig I ifw, 3 I Cg+.,Fm,,,f Jim, F RX S? :Q f L I X-X I 2 I H ff? PAGE 64 x ' , a ,f X , 5 f W K, f x I QX . Y , .S Ei I1 Q f A Band Since Apollo first plucked a string stretched across a turtle,s shell, man has been fascinated by the queer sensations of music. Savage tribes use very crude instruments, while a modern band has at its command the latest instruments that man has made. Technique with these instruments has to be developed by individual mem- bers, then they are given training to coordinate this technique with others to form harmony or symphonic effects. Either of these two trainings is difficult in itself and they are doubly difficult to master together. One organization which has mastered these fundamentals is our own Will Rogers High School Band. Conducted by Richard Knox, these musicians displayed their ability at foot- ball games, assemblies, basketball games, and their annual concert, March 13. Marching technique is one of the band,s outstanding achievements. This has required hours of practising from 7:00 till 8 :30 every morning during foot- ball season. Gloria Parker Was elected band queen, J. D. Boys' Glee Club 1 Organized for fun and entertainment, developed by a group of cooperating members, the Boys' Glee Club of Will Rogers High School stands forth in musical organizations as a talented chorus. One reason for their success and achievement is that membership is voluntary and no unwilling Worker is made to sing when he does not wish to do so. Thus one hundred per cent cooperation is the goal of achievement for this club. The club was organized by Richard Knox and George Kubik in 1940 and has grown rapidly in numbers and in reputation. A small library of vocal music has recently been acquired, including a Tramp- ing Song, dedicated to the Boys' Glec Club. These musicians present a short program with the band in the annual concert. D PAGE 69 A Cappella Choir From the time that the A Cappella Choir of Will Rogers High School first appeared in their royal blue and gold robes until their last Amen has died away, they command attention and respect from their audiences. Secular music would soon become sacchrine if sung continuously, so a carefully selected and planned program of music of various types, both sacred and secular, are sung by the group. They have sung at numerous places in the city and have broadcast several pro- grams. The choir is composed of sixty-six members and is directed by George Oscar Bowen. Singing for fun might Well be the slogan for the Will Rogers High School Mixed Chorus. Looking for the good in music and enjoying it when they find it is the ultimate goal of this organization. Recordings of great symphonies are played Weekly with an analytic score to study. Thus, learning how simple music really is, the members of this Mixed Chorus become a part of the myriad musicians enjoying the art of singing by singing the songs of Schubert, Stephen Foster, and other composers. Richard Knox, conductor, outlines plans for a Well-rounded and balanced musical, cultural, and historical course of vocal, as Well as instrumental music.
