On January 19 the Publications Board announced that money which had been subscribed would be refunded since it seemed impossible to obtain funds for publishing the book. At the request of parents and students another effort was made. In February work was Hnally begun with less than two months in which to complete the book. We th row out this LARIAT as an mnbassaclof' of good will, hoping it will remind you of many happy experiences. A ,gf 'Lili r5lil?i? For, to live meant to he an American citizen, to him. Now, as we who revere this great name and fincl our hearts filled with pride in its use pause in silent tribute to his memory, we are reminded that: YVill Rogers, as a man, was synonornous with a spirit of citizenship that might well become the guide for all who believe in the basis of Americanism, and the name we have inherited gives to us a strength and courage of inestimable value that is ours to use in the maintenance of Americanism. VVill Rogers, we thank you for the privilege which is ours-that of bearing your name in honor, and perpetuating it in memory. WIILL RQGERS VVILL ROGERS, son of Oklahoma, left to the people of the world a heritage of human- ism. From his earliest boyhood days, during which he primarily was interested in enter- taining his friends, to the day of his death, he followed a laugh strewn path of life-bring ing happiness and pleasure to all with whom he came in contact. E Beginning his public career with Texas Jackls Wild West Show in Johannesburg, South Africa, early in this century, Mr. Rogers rose consistently through the trials of theatricals to reach a new height of popu- larity for the American entertainer. This popularity was due, no doubt, to the sincerity of his purpose and his peculiar ability of al- ways being himself no matter what the situ- ation might be. Above is a reproduction of an early picture of Will Rogers which was used in his first publicity and billing on Broadway. At the time this picture was made, Rogers' popularity was fast becoming recognizedg and he was known as a gum-chewing, rope-twirling cowboy humorist. At the left is Will Rogers as he appeared in one of his first silent motion pictures. Note the typical expression of non-concern on his face - a characteristic that became typical of the man. -W.. ,A A+ -.tif-. r , Mn.. An lvf iQ '4- ' X 'S.9-v my .-eg? ,sigma ,U rs ff'-'six - t e wg Always an aviation enthusiast, VVill Rogers, shown here in the cockpit of one of the early day seaplanes com- mercially used, followed the advancement of sky-travel to his last day. During his lifetime he was credited with being one of the most air-traveled citizens of this country, and he never used any other method of travel if commercial avia- ' ll ' l for his requirements Realizing the im- tion cou 4 DFOVIK e . .. portance of commercial aviation, Rogers devoted much time to a studv of its possibilities and frequently sponsored erest in the aerial ex- moves for its improvement. His int ploration of a possible air route to the Orient via Alaska prompted him to fly with his very good friend, VViley Post, on their fatal trip to that northern territory. AgW A Nlemoieiol to on Olileihomein From Qklahonieins Built on a hill overlooking Rogers' beloved Verdigris valley, the VVill Rogers Meiiiorial at Claremore, Oklahoma, is a shrine visited by thousands of Americans annually. Within the walls of this Nlemorial visitors are vividly reminded of the man Rogers Was, and of the fatal flight in August, 1935, upon which the pic- ture at the left-the last one made of Will Rogers-was made. This Nlemorial is a tribute to Oklahomals best loved citizen and isareeognition ofhis worldly influence and outstanding character. ln bronze, the likeness of Will Rogers welconies all Visitors to the Xleniorial and recalls to their niinds his kindness and human philosophy, Une of the most outstanding attributes of this great man was his in- terest in the welfare of children. Always anxious to play such apart indicated hy the picture below which is taken from one of his outstanding character plays. Rogers, in this scene, depicts the kindness and con- sideration he possessed for children. In his personal life, his devotion to his own three children, Bill, Alinuny and Klary was an ever-growing nionunient to his nieniory. The task of guidance is not one belonging to one individual or a few persons but to the school organization as a whole with a large measure of responsibility placed on the home room and classroom teachers. Com- plete development of the personality is not accom- plished in the Work of one department. VVill Rogers football season brings back memories of many thrill packed moments. The gridsters did as well as could be expected of a group ofyoungsters playing high school football for the first time. Coaches Howard and Alexander brought these inexperienced boys along in fine fashion as the season progressed. The season started off in fine fashion, the Veteran Claremore Zebras barely squeezing out a victory and the students were given their initial thrill when Freddy Stewart intercepted a pass and ran 74 yards before he was finally downed from behind. The next game saw the Ropers tack up their first victory when they jour- neyed into the lair of the Broken Arrow Tigers and skinned them by a score of I4 to 6. Rogers fans are inclined to want to forget the next two games for in the first of the two contests, the Oklahoma City Northeast game, they used every- one but the waterboy and still came out on the wrong end of a go to 6 score. The second of the two contests was the one where we lost to the Central MBU team, ,Nuff said. The boys came back to life in the following contest with Sapulpa and liter- ally scared the wits out of those Chieftains before bowing, I3 to 6. As for the next game, nobody but persons in Blackwell will even talk out the affair. The boys played a fair brand of ball but they made some mistakes. livery time they made a mistake Blackwell scored a touchdown and they made enough mistakes to lose by a score of 34 to 6. ln the two final games of the season the boys played a swell brand of ball, winning their first home game, downing the Hlominy Bucks I3 to IO in freezing weather, and then coming back the following week to battle the lvebster lvar- riors on eyen terms most of the game, finally going down to a 6 to o defeat. GOLF Even less was known about the golf team than the track team at the time the yearbook went to press, for the divot diggers hadnlt seen action a single time. Prospects for a good team this year were bright and with the lower classmen gaining much needed experience this spring-we should be well rep- resented on the greens next season. TRACK At t.he time the yearbook went to press we didn't have a deliinite inkling as to the strength of the track team for we had seen them in action only twice. The first meet saw them thoroughly trounce Bristow and then the tables were reversed the following week when the thinclads tangled with Central. As in most of the other sports, many of the boys are sophomores and juniors this year, which probably means that we can look forward to a powerful team next year. These hours are busily spent in general management of the stage and in building scenery for school produc- tions. The club is headed by the stage manager and stage superintendent. There are three departments: electricity, scenery, and properties and each is under the direction of a stage manager. All sets, scenery, and lights are planned by them and the sound system, and movies are run by stagecraft boys. STUDENT CUSTODIANS ll: you need a Student Custodian, simply shout Monk ftheir beloved nicknamel and one of these boys will answer your call.
