ELEMENTARY ADVERTIZEMENTsi LINDA JEANETTE BROWN Love cannot be forced, love cannot be coaxed and teased. It comes out of Heaven, unasked and unsought. JAMES LAMAR BELLE ISLE JR. The joy experienced by a real Christian comes from kindness and a loving heart. FRANCES ADELAIDE CURRY Live ye not for the sorrows of today; but only for the happiness of tomorrow. 4 BRENDA MAXINE DAVIS We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there. REBECCA LYNN ESCHETE The innocent seldom find an easy pillow. GLENDA LORRAINE DAVIS There is nothing so great that I fear to do it for my friend; nothing so small that I disdain to do it for him. You must take it. The only choice is how. RACHEL MELINDA HOWELL A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity to freshen into smiles. PAMELA GAIL MESSENGER Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes your goal. 8 PRENTISS KEITH MORRIS Even the woodpecker owes his success to the fact that he uses his head and keeps pecking away until he finishes the job he starts. JULIE MARIE PATRICK The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criti- cism. THE HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1978 In the fall of 1966, forty-eight first graders entered Woodville Attendance Center. We were given two teachers, who were expected to teach us ANYTHING. We soon learned about the 4R's: reading, 'riting, ’rithmetic, and recess. The latter proved to be the most interesting. Mrs. Jackson's class enjoyed the daily rush to the door to watch the train. We were introduced to voting when Mrs. Jackson’s class elected Jim Belle Isle and Terri McGraw as class favorites to represent them in homecoming, and Mrs. Carter’s class elected Ernie Smith and Patti Johnston. When school started in the fall of 1967, there were forty-nine of us. We still had two teachers. Miss Cavin and Mrs. Anderson. We first learned of Lacy’s temper when she tripped Miss Cavin causing her to fall on her face. Mrs. Anderson’s class elected Alan Ryan and Susan Best as favorites, and Miss Cavin’s class elected Mary Ashley and Brad Dale. By the time we became third graders, there were only forty-one of us. Miss Cavin liked us so much, she decided to move up and teach us again. Mrs. Mary Ann Carter had the other half of us. Miss Cavin’s class elected Ronnie Longmire and Patti Johnston to represent them in the homecoming festivities, while Mrs. Carter’s class elected Clinton Butler and Doll Netterville. In the fall of '69, there were only thirty-seven of us who made it to the fourth grade. Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Tharp were our teachers for the year. After our Christmas vacation, we started to school in the Christian church building. At recess we enjoyed hiding in the “maze,” hoping not to be found when class began. One day CBS came to visit us. Mrs. Tharp’s class chose Quinton Ragsdale and Pam Messenger as their favorites, and Mrs. Campbell's class chose Bobby Wesberry and Kim Davis. When school started in the fall of 1970, we had a new school building, Wilkinson County Christian Academy. Mrs. Tharp, who had become Mrs. Trevillion during the summer, and Mrs. Ford were our teachers. There were only thirty-five of us at this time, but we added Bobby Weller. We had many magnif- icent hayrides, where some people made permanent fools of themselves. As fifth graders, we could not understand why we were not allowed to go to the prom. Mrs. Ford’s class chose Alan Ryan and Lacy Curry as favorites, while Mrs. Trevillion’s class elected West Dawson and Doll Netterville. As sixth graders, we went on a field trip to Natchez. We enjoyed touring the antebellum homes. We enjoyed the ice fights even more. Mrs. Depee’s class chose Susan Best and Jim Belle Isle as favorites, and Mrs. Ford’s class chose Leah McGraw and Tim Sterling. Lacy Curry and West Dawson were chosen as Mr. and Miss Elementary. In the fall of '72, thirty-four seventh graders entered junior high. It took quite awhile for us to learn where our classes were, how to handle high school teachers, and how to cram books into a tiny locker. We adjusted and began to like the new way of life. Our favorites were Clinton Butler and Brenda Davis. 130 In the fall of 1973, there were thirty-seven big, bad eighth graders. The boys found their delights in eating crickets in math class. We chose Mary Ellen Beard and Bobby Weller as our class favorites. In March, a tragic accident took the life of Clinton “Tick Butler, our class clown and friend. We worked hard and made enough money to dedicate the study area in front of the school to his memory. When we started high school in 1974, there were thirty-seven of us. We felt that Caren Simmons and Tommy Alonzo deserved to be Friendliest Freshmen because they shared themselves with everyone. We learned how to lock the teachers out of their classrooms. They were relieved to be locked out rather than in with us! We also became great airplane pilots, flying our paper inventions around the room in the mid- dle of class. Our favorites were Jim Belle Isle and Pam Messenger. Their favorites were each other. As Sophomores of 1975, we developed terrific eyesight as we tried to say our memory work. Poor Mrs. McCraine probably tore the trash can apart looking for cheat notes. Sorry, Mrs. McCraine, we didn’t cheat! Tommy Alonzo and Caren Simmons were chosen to be our Sensible Sophomores, even though neither had any sense. Susan Best and Tommy Alonzo were chosen as our class favorites. In August 1976, we became Juniors. We didn't know what lay ahead, but found out soon enough. We had to work to make money in order to have a good banquet and prom. As Juniors we had the honor and privilege of selling doughnuts. Caren Simmons, our class president, tried to get us out of this by losing the check to pay for the doughnuts. Unfortunately, it was found blowing across the parking lot. We also had the honor of having Riri Khansi as a classmate and friend. Even if only for a year, he certainly added to our class. Our Junior play, A Ready Made Family, somehow came to be a success. The banquet and prom proved to be one of the best remembered. This was really special because our class finally didn’t goof. There were thirty-one of us. Pam Messenger and West Dawson were our favorites, and Becky Eschete and Brian Spillman were our Jolliest Juniors. In August, 1977, twenty-eight of us became Seniors. Doll Netterville and Caren Simmons had left us for a higher education. Cynthia Pritchard had become Mrs. Wally Cavin and Leah McGraw had become Mrs. Eddie Ryan. Susan Ryan and Julie Patrick joined us. Mary Ellen Beard became Mrs. Randy Dowwett at Christmas, leaving us as only twenty-seven seniors. Out of our original class of forty-eight, there remain only eighteen students. Patti Johnston and Jim Belle Isle were our favorites, and Lacy Curry and Jim Belle Isle were Dignified Seniors. Bobby Weller and Cindy Spillman were Most Likely to Succeed. Pam Messenger and Brad Dale were voted to be Mr. and Miss WCCA, and Pam and Alan Ryan served as ’78 Homecoming Queen and King. Here we stand the Class of 1978. It might be the end of a class but the beginning of twenty-seven individual lives. We were lucky to have had good teachers to help us become the individuals that we are today. 131 THE CLASS WILL I, Susan Best, leave to Lallie Owens my ability to hold onto a man. I, Brenda Davis, leave my ability to get to school between the first and second bell to anyone who really needs it. We, the Senior Class of 1978, leave W.C.C.A. our entire treasury of $2.48. We, the Senior Class of 1978, will our great manners and our unlimited intelligence to the Seniors of 1979, who very much need them. Don’t abuse ’em! 134 CLASS PROPHECY One day last fall we took a look into our crystal ball To see what our future would be. And this is what we see: Some will be doctors, some will be lawyers. Some will be teachers or bums We put our heads together and added the facts And here are the sums right down to the brass tacks: We always considered West to be good-looking.
