Headmaster’s Message MR. GLEN WHETSTONE, JR. Headmaster TO THE STUDENT BODY: I want to counsel with you this year on preparation for the future through education. The theme of my message is that regardless of the type of occupation that you hope to follow, a certain amount of preparedness will be required on your part. Webster’s Dictionary says that to prepare is to fit, adapt, or qualify beforehand for a particular purpose, end, or condition. You students should feel that you are now in the process of qualifying beforehand for a particular purpose. Students from our school will gen- erally either go on to college or go into an occupation that requires them to learn a specific trade. It goes without saying that if you aspire to a higher education in college, you are going to have to have a good academic foundation in high school. Bucking a college curriculum is like butting a brick wall for those students who have not applied themselves in high school. There is just no room anymore at the college level for those students who have just gotten-by in high school. Well, you might say, I'll just not fool around with that college curriculum. I'll just learn me a trade, and 1 won't have to apply myself to my high school subjects all that much. I am sorry to tell you that failure lurks just around the corner for those who pursue this line of rea- soning. Would you hire a carpenter who did not understand mathematics? Would you hire a secretary who could not type well? How about an auto mechanic or an electri- cian? Do you think that these two tradesmen would need to know a lot of science and mathematics? I think that you can get the picture of what I am trying to say without undue strain. You students are at the crossroads right now in this period of your life. You can apply yourself to your studies and your reward will very likely be a happy and fruitful life. On the other hand, you can take a ho-hum attitude about your studies andbecome just another statistic on the unemployment rolls. I think that you all know which course I want you to follow. Sincerely. Glen Whetstone, Jr. 13
