Flying high are banners bearing such words as. f'lVlore Book Reportsf' Longer Themes. and Down with Easy Nightworkf' One curious little banner was labeled 'Nicer Notes and Ifriendlier Letters. Behind these came the float, with and P. painted on its side CSubject and Predicatel on which rode many passive Verbs and Nouns. Step- ping snappily along come active Verbs and Prep O'Sitions and little ConCniej Junction followed by a host of commas and periods. Re- gardless of person, number, gender, and case, all eight parts of speech fall into line to march to the front. Closing up the rear, comes a grand finale. For there's poetry with her ballads, her odes. and her sonnets, with a group of dignified plays. Then there's the novel all dressed up in brief reviews with book reports and precis writing. lfinally without a falter comes a myriad of Oral English topics, eagerly striving to keep the pace set for all, 18

Now in perfect order we see little bottles of ink with pens. and rulers coming next, followed by the debits and the credits, the protits and the losses. the assets and the liabilities. with the overheads. the in- comes. the costs, and the retail prices, all striving to keep in their places and some to keep out of the red ranks. Singing in a me- chanical language of their own. queer little figures consisting of dots and dashes. with twisted lines and curves, tramp proudly along in the parade of shorthand. Behind them come their less known but equally dignitied companions. the tripletsfCtammercial Geo- graphy directing routes with product-arrayed maps: Commercial Arithmetic counting the miles and demonstrating the short cuts. while Commercial Law keeps them all within bounds. Speedy tigures from adding machines and comptonieters with mimeograph forms in 'nolicate copies keep a steady pace as whole sets of bookkeeping and accounting problems strive to keep a perfect balance.
