I , . i I I us, VALEDICTOR IAN ADDR ESS Dear Frxends Teachers and Classmates Our httle boat stands at rest tomght at the bendxng of the stream and we are pausmg awhrle to draw m our breath for the work ahead The voyage of hfe 15 through many deep and unknown channels w1th many wmdmgs and turnmgs that often make xt hard for us to tell just what we have passed by and what we are yet to meet It seems a long course to follow as we row through the waters and we are often tempted to let our bark drrft wxthersoever It may but as we rest upon our oars and look back how very short a dlstance we seem to have come after all and how close the banks appear to be lt 15 pleasant to pause here at the bendmg of the stream and conslder for a httle the pleasant calmness of the wave rrpples through whlch we have so easrly been rowlng but we cannot lmger long for already the nozse of hfe s larger waters rs cal11ng us and we know that we must row ahead out of the peaceful shallow current of our young l1fe where we have been able to draft through so much of our passage and pull hard through the deeper channels agaxnst the stream of actmve lxfe We cannot pass forever out of th1s quxet channel into the deeper waters awaxtlng us wrthout thanking you from the bottom of our hearts for the prlvxlege of begxnnmg th1s voyage of hfe on the breast of so clear and calm a stream For these happy years our bark has glided so smoothly along between the banks that we could reach over and gather the l1l1es through which we were gurded and were scarcely consclous of our own efforts an propellmg our little craft up the stream Our teachers have carefully Shel tered us from every adverse wmg of thought and have warned us with the most zealous pams of the ev1l rocks and shoals or tangle of sea week so sure to be met wxthxn the broader channels of our onward course We realrze that had you saddened by many disasters and retarded by many a barrxer that mxght threaten to wreck our vessel even at the very begmnmg of our voyage and we want you to know how much we appreczate your lovmg thoughtfulness before we ton1ght sa1l onward through the deeper channels to the sea of the larger lxfe awaltxng us To you dear teachers we must also express our earnest thanks Often and often rn the days to come when we are thrown more and more upon our own guxdance and mtuntron our mmds w1ll travel back to you and we wxll see how many txmes you have helped to steer our frarl bark around tlus or that dxfflculty t1ll we shall long I am sure to return to the shelter and protectlon of your pxlotmg but have glven us both our chart and our compass and as our boat ghdes out of the waters where you have been xts guide so long and your eyes follow us on mto the deeper channels ahead you may ever see our green and whrte as signals of promlse and grateful resolutron from the class that must never be afrald to show lts colors as we push out to perform our mrssmon in the splendid sea of a blgger opportunity And thus classmates we lxnger at the bend of the stream the end of our course We have paddled together through the school waves behmd us but each must row forth alone mto the deeper channels to come wherever and mto whatever they may lead Let us keep our green and white flyrng wxth all that they slgnlfy to each one of us and face every duty of the unknown waters bravely and
