PDHEWUHD The spirit of Central can be found in the laughter and scuffle of the three o'cIock rush from the parking lot, that swim in the pool on a hot day, Dr. Thompson's opening assembly address, clattering of machines in typing classes, the patient efforts of a Home Ec. student to sew a STRAIGHT seam, the late, long hours spent on an English research paper, the butterflies in the stomach before the Choral Contest, or Tuesday and Hey, which club meets today? This spirit is seen on the familiar faces that flash by in the halls, the mud smeared faces of football players, and make-up besmeared faces in the Senior Play. Each, in his own special way, was a part of this year's Spirit of Central. We Salute . . ew . .the Spirit uf Wilkes Central ln the loom there is cu pattern, the pattern is a year . . . It speaks of love and sadness, lt speaks of doubt, and work, and sometimes failure . . lt is broken by a thread of gold, A thread that is the spirit of Central High. Work and worry are as nothing when o'er passed by that thread. lt meets failure, and the darkness passes into light, lt lends a lift to the practice-worn athlete. To homework, and cramming in the late hours, and test day It is the impetus that makes us work toward the fulfilling of a dream. Spirit rouses itself within us at the contest of the hour, It rolls from countless voices and speeds the runner onward. Spirit ioins the students in crowded halls that empty into the clouded future. Spirit is the bond between the hearts that mingled here . . . Hearts that become entwined in the thread that is the spirit that is the gold. -Eddy Stafford

Page Six The spirit of Central is in the group . . . the rushing mass of faces in the halls . . . shared tension and silence during Mid-term . . . perspiration streaked faces of the lunchroom workers . . . student council meetings . . . parents at P.T.A .... noisy, chattering typing classes . . . home ec. students laughing at the burnt up bouble boiler . . . crowds at the football games . . . Lets show the boys we are behind them . . . Then Eagles echoing through the basketball busses . . . handful of daffodils given to teachers by F.T.A. members during Honor the Teacher month . . . the county wide recreation meeting of the 4-H . . . the backstage ad-libbing at the Senior Play prac- tice . . . the student body honoring outstanding mem- bers on Awards Day . . . the long hot drill session in the band . . . afternoon practice in the Y for the sports minded. A little encouraement, like this steak supper, is al- ways a great morale builder for athletics. Attentiveness and interest, on a warm spring day, prove that the central spirit is more than on the surface.
