Central's academic program requires many hours of individual preparation. QIBIBP Learning was a most important part of the Spirit of Central . . . cramming for exams . . . dissection of worms in biology . . . Miss Moretz, may I check out 'l5 books for my research paper? . . . the feel of new books at the beginning of the year . . . day after day doing that final bit on an assignment . . . the proud feeling of wearing ff f a green and gold hood at graduation. Charles Lackey and Bob Transou discover that chem- istry can be fun and beneficial. Page Six The spirit of Central is in the group . . . the rushing mass of faces in the halls . . . shared tension and silence during Mid-term . . . perspiration streaked faces of the lunchroom workers . . . student council meetings . . . parents at P.T.A .... noisy, chattering typing classes . . . home ec. students laughing at the burnt up bouble boiler . . . crowds at the football games . . . Lets show the boys we are behind them . . . Then Eagles echoing through the basketball busses . . . handful of daffodils given to teachers by F.T.A. members during Honor the Teacher month . . . the county wide recreation meeting of the 4-H . . . the backstage ad-libbing at the Senior Play prac- tice . . . the student body honoring outstanding mem- bers on Awards Day . . . the long hot drill session in the band . . . afternoon practice in the Y for the sports minded. A little encouraement, like this steak supper, is al- ways a great morale builder for athletics. Attentiveness and interest, on a warm spring day, prove that the central spirit is more than on the surface. Along with a student's eagerness to leam, Central teachers are willing to give personal instruction. The theme of Wilkes Central is prepartion for the future, and college day makes the future more real. The spirit shone through those who stood alone, the leaders . . . those who sounded the student body's voice to How this school should run . . . serving at the P.T.A. supper . . . Yes, l know your son. He's in my room. . . . sponsoring college day . . . student council members wait- ing patiently outside the Home Ec. rooms while the repre- sentatives have coffee and doughnuts. But the spirit can shine through those who lead only as the student groups follow. Here we find the true spirit of Central, in those who serve as individuals to make up a group . . . in Hey don't mark on that desk, its SCHOOL property . . . l can't goil have to study . . . C Who cares where he lives? He's a great guy J . . . Sure l'll stay and help with the decorations for the dance. . . . the students decided to go by the rules, to keep up a high acedemic standing, to support extra-curricular activi- ties, to let personal worth be the yardstick for measurement at Central. ln living this year at Central the student body found within themselves and their actions the spirit of Central.
