It speaks of love and sadness, lt speaks of doubt, and work, and sometimes failure . . lt is broken by a thread of gold, A thread that is the spirit of Central High. Work and worry are as nothing when o'er passed by that thread. lt meets failure, and the darkness passes into light, lt lends a lift to the practice-worn athlete. To homework, and cramming in the late hours, and test day It is the impetus that makes us work toward the fulfilling of a dream. Spirit rouses itself within us at the contest of the hour, It rolls from countless voices and speeds the runner onward. Spirit ioins the students in crowded halls that empty into the clouded future. Spirit is the bond between the hearts that mingled here . . . Hearts that become entwined in the thread that is the spirit that is the gold. -Eddy Stafford PDHEWUHD The spirit of Central can be found in the laughter and scuffle of the three o'cIock rush from the parking lot, that swim in the pool on a hot day, Dr. Thompson's opening assembly address, clattering of machines in typing classes, the patient efforts of a Home Ec. student to sew a STRAIGHT seam, the late, long hours spent on an English research paper, the butterflies in the stomach before the Choral Contest, or Tuesday and Hey, which club meets today? This spirit is seen on the familiar faces that flash by in the halls, the mud smeared faces of football players, and make-up besmeared faces in the Senior Play. Each, in his own special way, was a part of this year's Spirit of Central. The more he gave of himself, the more he found of the Spirit-the Spirit which we have attempted to record in this edition of GREEN AND GOLD. EUNTENT5 ACADEMIC . . ACTIVITIES . . . SPORTS .... FEATURES ........ ADVERTISEMENTS .... 12 44 76 82 Page Six The spirit of Central is in the group . . . the rushing mass of faces in the halls . . . shared tension and silence during Mid-term . . . perspiration streaked faces of the lunchroom workers . . . student council meetings . . . parents at P.T.A .... noisy, chattering typing classes . . . home ec. students laughing at the burnt up bouble boiler . . . crowds at the football games . . . Then Eagles echoing through the basketball busses . . . handful of daffodils given to teachers by F.T.A. members during Honor the Teacher month . . . the county wide recreation meeting of the 4-H . . . the backstage ad-libbing at the Senior Play prac- tice . . . the student body honoring outstanding mem- bers on Awards Day . . . the long hot drill session in the band . . . afternoon practice in the Y for the sports minded. A little encouraement, like this steak supper, is al- ways a great morale builder for athletics. Attentiveness and interest, on a warm spring day, prove that the central spirit is more than on the surface. Boys in industrial arts class give practical assistances to the school by refinishing the desks. ,Hr Yes Jla. tw L l Central's academic program requires many hours of individual preparation. QIBIBP Learning was a most important part of the Spirit of Central . . . cramming for exams . . . dissection of worms in biology . . . Miss Moretz, may I check out 'l5 books for my research paper? . . . the feel of new books at the beginning of the year . . . day after day doing that final bit on an assignment . . . the proud feeling of wearing ff f a green and gold hood at graduation. Charles Lackey and Bob Transou discover that chem- istry can be fun and beneficial. The rush between classes, the friendly hello's, and jovial appearance of these students well represent Central's pleasant atmosphere. , ' . N .. . ,gK535's serif se -X ,ww-an mduxqgq Page Seven Along with a student's eagerness to leam, Central teachers are willing to give personal instruction. The theme of Wilkes Central is prepartion for the future, and college day makes the future more real. The spirit shone through those who stood alone, the leaders . . . those who sounded the student body's voice to How this school should run . . . serving at the P.T.A. supper . . . Yes, l know your son. He's in my room. . . . sponsoring college day . . . student council members wait- ing patiently outside the Home Ec. rooms while the repre- sentatives have coffee and doughnuts. But the spirit can shine through those who lead only as the student groups follow. Here we find the true spirit of Central, in those who serve as individuals to make up a group . . . in Hey don't mark on that desk, its SCHOOL property . . . l can't goil have to study . . . C Who cares where he lives? He's a great guy J . . . Sure l'll stay and help with the decorations for the dance. . . . the students decided to go by the rules, to keep up a high acedemic standing, to support extra-curricular activi- ties, to let personal worth be the yardstick for measurement at Central. ln living this year at Central the student body found within themselves and their actions the spirit of Central. Co-operation and interest are tangible forces which are seen in a P.T.A. supper. e, ,kr--f W 4 3 Q U 5' 3-3 OKI as 3 Q. .JO X - us! l' Interest in all phases of life is shown in this study and observation of young children as these future homcmakcrs take charge for a day. A successful exhibition of practicable learning encourages good quality-a trait of Wilkes Central. Central's spirit is shown in the more practical prepara- tion for life . . . the pride in the face of a first-year Home Ec. student as she cooks her first meal or makes her first blouse . . . the all girl wedding in third year . . . those lectures on cattle judging and tool identification in 'Ag. . . . or working at home on projects . . . filling out endless pages of iournals in bookkeeping . . . filling miniature letters in exasperating little cardboard files for office management. X v J The practical application of chemistry proves that study IS worth while. The spirit of our school is founded on Central's purpose- to teach, and to develop the whole of each individual. We have learned that in order to develop, we must work. How much we grew and what factors of our personalities we developed depended on what we worked on, whether it was outlining a chemistry chapter before the class lecture . . . forcing tired, aching legs to run around the track field just one more time . . . working on the clean up crew for the Jr.-Sr .... working as an office practice girl. In working to learn, there was developed ha spirit, which prompts a former student to say proudly, Yes, l'm a graduate of Wilkes Central High School! Page Ten The atmosphere in a bank increases the incentive to under- stand economics. Indian war dance adds to the study of early American Liter ature in Freshmen English. Careful planning and first hand experience by Mrs. Smith gives the Centralites tasty, well balanced meals. Central's spirit sounds through the whirr of Mr. Bussel's waxing machine, footsteps in the lonely halls as Lane Wood helps Mr. Bussel after school . . . the clatter of plates as the students who work in,the cafe- teria serve the long lines of hungry Centralites . . . Hey, Mrs. Smith, can I have five pieces of bread? . . . the scrape of sandpaper os Doc's Boys refinish the desks. The spirit could be seen in the cleanliness and efficiency of the school. Willingness and busyness of these helpers reflect the high standards of our cafeteria. Mr. Bussel brushes up the unusually peaceful hall before another rush of Central feet. FLOYD WOODWARD Superintendent of North Wilkesboro Public Schools Superintendent Woodward, with the aid of school architect, points out to members of the Board of Education de- tails in plans for the new gymtorium. BOARD OF EDUCATION members, left to right, standing: Mr. Russell Gray, Mr. Boyd Stout, Mr. Lewis Hill Jenkins, architect, Mr. Clarence Coffey, Superintendent Woodward, Dr. Clint Bentley, Mr. Weaver Starr, seated: Mrs. Palmer Horton, vice chairman, Mr. Edward S. Finley, chairman, and Mr. Paul Osbomeg not pictured: Mr. Sam Ogilvie, Mr. Bryan Cilreath, and Mr. Ralph I. Williams. The North Wilkesboro Public Schools' Superintendent and the School Boards of both North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro have great responsibilities and make many im- portant decisions in providing for the students of Wilkes Central. This year they have planned and made provision for the gymtorium soon to be bujlt. As usual they are alert to provide the best teachers available. The Principal of Wilkes Central continually meets the challenges of a large growing high school. Improved curricuum and better scholastic opportunities for all pupils re- ceive his constant attention. DR. H. E. THOMPSON Principal of Wilkes Central Page Twelve ,Wm . FACULTY She surely does make us work! . , . but, you know, she's a GOOD teacher! We were wonderin.' Would you be our advisor for this club? The Wilkes Central faculty not only taught well their respective subjects, but they also found time to take an active interest in extra-curricular student activi- ties. ln and out of class they showed Centralities how to better live. 1. A week out of school cured most students, but wasn't a short- ened Christmas vacation disappointing? When do we get our calling cards? ll Page Sixteen Will you give me one of yours? . . . Seniors managed to convey to lowly under- classmen the traditional idea of Absolute Senior superiority in all areas of endeavor, but they also beamed proudly on Awards Day when their friends were honored. The last few months of school were busy ones . . . being measured for caps and gowns . . . ap- plying for a iob, visiting colleges for interviews, working especially hard for honors, and finally practicing for graduation. 5 I w Q 9 W h v' Q Yi' ? f5?.4,w., , 3 . Left to Right: JIM SPAINHOUR, presidentg CY BRAME, vice presidentg MR. EVANS, advisorg CAROLYN MITCHELL, secretary, and ODELL WHITE, treasurer . Oh! I hope my ring fits! . . . Subscribe for a magazine, mam? . . . Don't tell our Jr.-Sr. theme. Hey! Watch that LADDER, it's gonna' fall! . . . What'll l do? Three boys want to sit by the same girl! . . . ln the last-minute rush it seemed as if the Jr.-Sr. would never become a reality, but finally, when it did come, Juniors realized that the hard work, fun and fellowship which they had shared in creating the Jr.-Sr. gave them a double pleasure and meaning for that night. A wide sprinkling of those prized possessions, letters in sports and band, witnessed to Juniors' active participation in extra-curricular activities. More scholarly students worked on essay contests or debate. Their reward was membership in the Green Key and serving as marshals. Ladies and gentlemen, as you well know, my candidate . . . Who do you think will get to be president of the student body? . . . Vote for . . . lt was election time again and the student body should choose from the Junior class their student council leaders. Juniors began to think of September when they would be the leaders and dignified Seniors at Cen- tral. Miss Clements' voice rang out through the cacaphony of voices. Every Tuesday and during the few night sessions, Glee Club members did work, learning the music for civic club programs or con- tests, hoping for high ratings and community recognition. How tense they were, waiting for the contest ratings to be posted, and how happy when they got a superior CU. The work had paid off not only in high ratings but in memories of a job well done, of friendships formed in singing together and of representing the school at the Mars Hill or Greensboro choral clinics. I saw you through the mirror, that's how. Sometimes I'd like to quit driving a bus, but when I drive up in front of the school, I feel good, somehow. Maybe it's because I know that children didn't have to walk through that mud I had such a time with, or be- cause l'm proud of a safe driving record, or because I have a feeling of being a part of the largest high school fleet in the state. Second place in the Northwest Conference and a 6-2 conference record climaxed an exciting and praiseworthy season for our Eagles. With loyal fans fol- lowing action closely, our gridiron men defeated top ranking foe after foe, allow- ing opponents only 33 points while scoring a total 161 themselves. HUDSON K6-OJ: A rainsoaked field and steady rain limited offensive action, the only TD being made early in the first period. Defensive action was especially good, however, the only threat being in the second period when Hudson drove to our eight. TAYLORSVILLE 125-OJ: Central racked up a relatively easy victory, Moore scoring 2TD's on 10 and 40 yard dashes and passing to Vannoy, who carried for the 3rd and ran 48 yards from scrimmage for the 4th. HICKORY C2-71: Quilici blasted through Hickory's line to nail their QB on a safety early in the first period. Seesawing penalties, fumbles, and intercepted passes kept fans in constant suspense, while stalwart defense held our rivals, favored with us for first place in the conference, until the last five minutes. MORGANTON C18-OJ: Speed, good blocking, and a stout defense gave the Eagles a decided win and renewed hopes for the conference title. Passes to Pipes and Pardue accounted for 12 points, and elusive run by Vannoy, for 6. MT. AIRY C37-OJ: Before a iubilant homecoming crowd, our Eagles scored in every quarter for a brilliant non-conference win. Vannly scored on runs of 7 and 50 yards, Riggs, 51, McEntire, 30, and White, 60, for five of the six TD's. The other came on a 15 yard pass from Moore to Vannoy, ELKIN U2-OJ: Crippled by injuries and running out of QB's, Central handed Elkin their first defeat. Rain, again hampered offensive action, but defense was strong. Third row: Augustine Quilici, Tommy Frazier, Robert Pipes, Bill Riggs, Wallace Meade, lim Spainhour, Penny Wray. ELKIN U2-OJ: Crippled by iniuries and running out of QB's, Central handed Elkin their first defeat. Rain, again hampered offensive action, but defense was strong. MARION K7-l9i: Outweighed 20 pounds per boy and handed a series of bad breaks, our Eagles played a hard-fought game. A strong defense, however, forced our visitors to us air attacks for scoring. The TD and conversion was made by White after the Eagles put on a drive of 65 yards. LENIOR U8-OJ: ln the last few seconds of the second quarter, Moore hit Vannoy with a scoring pass. The game had been closely played until then, but our Eagles went on to score twice in the second half, holding Lenior scoreless. NEWTON-CONOVER U3-OD: Several long runs, well executed plays, and solid defense gave our Eagles another scoreless opponent. Two TD's by McEntire an a conversion by White composed the score. A tackle by Quilici on the five yar line deterred a possible TD by Newton. VALDESE 121-71: Victory over our arch rivals gave us the opportunity to tie for the conference title, by playing Marion the following week. As usual Valdese was out to get us, and the game was an exciting contest from beginning to end. WC took advantage of several Valdese blunders, making two consecutive TD's in less than a minute of playing time. Wilkes Central's coaching staff: Coach Stallings Coach Hoffman, and Coach Branch. Hey, Julie, what're we wearin' tonight? is an important question to a cheerleader who's been working all week to charter that student bus, make posters, plan a pep rally that won't flop, or decorate the goal posts. Practice and plans for the coming season began early in the summer, when the sweltering heat in somebody's back yard made the ever-enthusiastic cheer-leaders even more anxious for cool football weather. All this hard work was many times rewarded, though, as the victories for our team piled higher and higher. An out-of-'town game the night before mid-terms! Oh well, that's only part of your duty as one of Wilkes Central's Seven -and besides it's always fun riding on the basketball bus! Gee, all of it was fun. lt's great to be a part in the victory team! Coach Hubbard had our girls' varsity literally on the ball with hopes for a good season, even though graduation last year had left the team with only two seasoned players. A victory of 71-41 in the first conference game with Hudson gave our Eagles a good start. After that the season was a salt and pepper affair -an even sprinkling of wins and losses. The final conference record was 8-8. Since the junior players have gained valuable experi- ence and the sophomores and freshmen have seen action, our Eagles look forward to a rip-roaring season next year. The BOYS VARSITY are, fleft to rightl: Iim Whicker, jerry Moore, Larry Billings, Harrold McEntire, Cary Wannoy, Odell YVhite, Charlie Billings, Gene Winters, Kent Rhodes and Robert Pipes. BUYS' VARSITY The loss of two seniors, and the need of finding the right team combination gave Coach Hoffman quite a lot to think about as the 1957-58 season began. Once again Wilkes Central offered a promising group of ballplayers, but, for reasons not too clear, the Eagles iust did not have the final push to come out of the season a conference winner. They were never very far behind their opponents-losing Whick's s1u'e-aim jump shot leaves the Marion team flat-footed. many games by only 2 or 3 points-and often ahead dur- ing the first half. Still they seemed never to get over the bump and win consistently. Returning lettermen this year were Robert Pipes, Jim Whicker and Kent Rhodes, forwardp Jerry Moore, centerg Gary Vannoy, and Harold McEntire, guard. Even long-legged strides don't stop Vannoy, Moore and Whicker seem to be causing their opponents Pipes, whlckefy and Bl10d0S give the NCWYOII Pl1lY9l' distress, a rough time on rebounds. Davidson, Jim Shumate broke his own earlier record, in the discus throw, adding further to Wilkes Central's achieve- meI'll'S. After receiving our pins on Awards Day, and possibly winning another letter, we ter- minated our club year with the delightful picnic given by the Quarterback Club at Taylorsville Lake. HIINUHS i Out of the many students at Central there are a few who are chosen for special recognition because of outstanding scholarship, sports activities, citizenship, and leadership. With this recognition comes responsibility-the responsi- bility ot personal example. The student body watches and patterns after them. The caliber ot Wilkes Central's student body in future years depends greatly on those honored. Henry Absher and Priscilla Reynolds of Andover Massachusetts, talk with a German shopkeeper durz ing the American Junior Red Cross Study Visit Pro- gram in Europe. Sarah well deserves the honor of D.A.R. Good Citizen, which was bestowed upon her by the vote of her classmates. Because of outstanding citizenship and leadership, Sarah and Toni were chosen to represent Central at Tar Heel Girls' State. Chosen by the American Legion, jim Mills repre- sented Central at Boys' State. Frank Crow and jim Mills brought honor to Central by winning top prizes in the District Science Fair held in Boone.
