North Wilkesboro, North Carolina P g TI Page Four With supply bag slung over one shoulder and camera in hand, our yearbook photographer is quite a familiar figure on the halls of Central or anywhere that harbors the potentialities of a good picture. Whether he is arranging group pictures in the library during fourth period or making ad pictures after school, he is always well supplied with two things-a ready smile and helpful suggestions. Because of his unselfish donation of time, his willingness to help, his sunny personality, and the excellent products of his photographic talent, we dedicate this the 1957 GREEN AND GOLD to you, MR. The Superintendent and Board of Educa- tion, informed of school needs, plan for future growth and work toward improved instruction through the selection and retention of quali- fied teachers. The principal, working closely with other administrators, keeps his fingers on the pulse of every activity at Wilkes Central, works toward an enriched curriculum, advises course selection, and answers countless questions. SENIUHE Measurements for caps and gowns, de- bates about graduation invitation orders, and the Junior-Senior Banquet passed all too quickly, and, suddenly, subdued seniors were listening to the solemn baccalaureate sermon, and preparing for graduation cere- monies. The Night came when nervous boys and fluttery girls trying to seem dignified Page Tcwniy-Eigli! graduated finally from high school and turned eagerly to the future. In spite of all the years ahead of them, all the wonders that will inevitably unfold, they can never forget the work, the fun, the trials, the accomplishments, and the friendships these years had brought . . . I uniol-A bv new 7,liMgA may l The JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS, 1 Vannoy, Treasurerg Sarah Jane Payne. President: Linda jo Codbey, Secretaryg and Jim VVhicker, Vice-President are shown here with one of their advisors, Miss McNeill, planning that all-important event, the Junior- Scnior Banquet. The junior year was characteristically one of furious activity and projects, most of these aimed in the purposeful direction of staging a Junior-Senior Banquet that would do its planners proud. The class went through periods of depres- sion and elation concerning the frightening financial aspect of the J.-S., they came through the Crowell-Collier magazine sale, however, with flying colors, raking in a bigger profit than had any previous junior class at W. C. With their new budget of 53,'lOO, they began polling ideas for the superior that they brought off fin the springj without a hitch. Coming, as upperclassmen, under the in- fluence of the college-mindecl seniors, the previously sheltered juniors became aware of job and college requirements, the fact that they, too, would soon be shoved out on their own gave them reason for some sober thought. They expended monstrous amounts of energy preparing speeches for the U. N. speech contest and the other speech contest peculiar in origin to the junior year. Becoming eligible for membership in most school societies, they began for the first time to take responsible parts in school life, culmi- nating their year were the election from among the juniors of the student body officers and club officers, and the selection of mar- shals for the following year. The junior class, with a new sensation of importance, readied to step into the shoes of the departing seniors. l'npJi' Tfwnvljx'-.Y1'nrr 17-i- - of-A JUNILIH5 JAMES BLACKBURN . Youngsters still, but finally begining to get their high school sea-legs, the sopho- mores were the sandwich class, the middle- kid-not many clubs to ioin, no outstanding school functions to engineer. They escaped boredom by going steady, dissecting worms in biology, and starting minor fads. By try- ing out fast music, cigarettes, and getting past Doc's office without a pass card, they bided the time until they could get their driver's licenses, and stay out until eleven-thirty. September after- noons found the band members hot and tired but eager to perfect each new formation, as they drilled over and over again. Before each football game, the band formed two football lines and played Victors , our school song, while the football players ran through the lines. The flashy green and gold uniforms were seen at many festive occasions-Appalachian's Homecoming, the Caro- lina-Wczke Forest game, the United Nations Day parade, and Wilkes Central's own Homecoming parade. Although some concern was expressed re- garding the greenness of many of this year's Eagles, these fears were partially quelled by our smashing victories over Hudson, 27-6, in the season's first game, and then over Taylors- ville, 25-6. Our first defeat came when, with high hopes, the Eagles traveled to Hickory, on- ly to be defeated 2'l-6. Bitter from their 24-0 shellacking of the prev- ious year, Morganton faced the Eagles with revenge in their eyes. A hard-fought battle all the way, the game, around which W. C.'s homecoming celebration was built, ended in a 7-7 deadlock. Mid-November found Coach Bobbie Brooks' Lady Eagles starting the grueling practice sessions, that preceded their T956-57 basketball season. The girls, wanting to better their fifth-place conference rating of last season, worked hard to acquire speed and shooting skill. The Central girls turned back their first two op- ponents, Elkin and Statesville, in non-conference games, then in their first conference game they bowed to Taylorsville. However, sporting new uni- forms and god sportsmanship, the Brooks' sextet bounced back to win the next seven games by ample margins. The Lady Eagles were in a solid second place as they started the second half of the conference sched- ule. Though turned back again by Taylorsville, they were determined to keep that second-place loop, and maintaining their brilliant performance, they de- feated the remaining seven teams. Thus they ended the regular season with a T4-2 conference record, which enabled them to compete in the conference tournament at Lincolnton. The team, however, made up for its inexperience in height, giving every opponent terrific battle. Opening the season by bowing to Elkin, the Eagles bounced back to quell Statesville 48 to 39. Though defeated by the Taylorsville quintet in the season's first conference game, the Central team got back in the running when they defeated both Marion and Morganton in the most exciting games of the season. Falling to the powerful Hickory five and to the Lenior team, whom they defeated in the second half of the season, the Eagles still maintained their good spirits, they were defeated by only two points by both Hud- son and Valdese, thus showing great improvement.
