WLUATHLETIC DINNER ,Knight Haies Losing By TOM CONAWAY ' Dave Knight just doesn't like losing. And, he's going to do some- thing about it. The short, stockily-built Wa- terloo Lutheran University ath- letic director promised a tougher approach. for the 1970-71 season Monday night fat the school's annual athletic' dimer at Berk- ley Tavern. I don't consider this past year alsuccessf' said Knight, in his closing remarks to. approxi- mately 200 students. Sure, we maybe had fun, but we compet- ed in 17 Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association. sports and didn't win a thing. I think you have more fun when you win. Next season will be different. The coaches are going to cra c k right down. .There'll be no fooling around. If you can't cut the mustard, YOWH b9.S9!lQ-l,....,..,.-M32 To emphasize, his ..-point, Knight 'mentioned that the foot- ball teani will work out later this month in an effort to get a jump on next season. Roger Passmore, a .six-foot, 187-p o u n d defensive haltback with the Golden Hawks, receiv- ed the top male award for con- tributing the most to athletics at WLU. . . , A third - year student from! Brantford, Passmore is pres- ident of the- Letterman's Club and was in charge of the athlet- ic program. Kyra Kristensen was picked as the woman contributing the most to athletics. She captained the basketball team and served as president of the Women's Athletic Association. . Most valuable player awards went to Stan Galt, hockey, Chris Coulthard, basketballg Paul Hendershot, footballg Loraine Gregson, girls' volley- ball and .Joanne Tully, girls' basketball. Most valuable rookie awards were won by Phil Lepan, hoc- keyg Wally Parker, football, and Larry Danby, basketball. Bob Smeenk received a. trophy as the most outstanding defensive basketball player. Special four-year awards were presented to Bob Seager in hockey and 'Adrian Kraayeveld and Mike McMahon in football. Two members of the wrestling team also received awards. Rick Bryant and Bob Gould OIAA titles, and finished third in the national finals at Alberta. Angus MacFarlane, athletic director at Mount AllisonvUni- versityin New Brunswick, was' the guest speaker. He empha- sized the importance of athlet- ics and urged young people to' use both reason and passion upon entermg the working world after graduation. Maybe the next great wars will Q gught on the athletic field,'i id the. portly Mari- timer. It's a lot- better to beat somebody 70-0' then, to shoot 1,000 people. Q MacFarlane Messed that peo- ple must not allowthemselves to live by either reason or pas- sion alone. People who use passion alone as a guiding force usually create fires which consume them, he said.
