STUDE TS COU CIL Enz'ironnzents are not passive wrappings but active processes, and any technology gradually cre- ates a totally new ent'irotznzent. .UA RSHA LL JIeL I 'HAN fv- This year student power, a sf' greatly niisconstrued phase, has '1 ' come to be recognised as a new medium or technology possessing the potential to change and re- shape our university environ- ments. To do so, it must he per- ceived as a positive medium. Basic to its concept is the accept- ance of responsibility as a duty, and not as a right obtained through the empty and sterile process of student demonstra- tions. Student power implies posi- tive involvement in university government giving responsibility Jim Griffiths to the student in such areas as ' undergraduate teaching, curricu- lum decisions, the planning of new rules for college life. The challenge of this responsibility must be recognised now while he is still a student, for within a matter of months he will be hurled from the college com- munity into a larger comnzunity-one that instantly denzands the individual to make decisions, whether they be in the business world. private life, or in the realm of civic' provincial and federal government. What have I achieved-not only as an individual in academic terms, but as a voice in the collective medium of student power-this past year at WLUT' This is the fundamental question of responsible student participation in the university community. Indeed, .student power as a viable concept presupposes that this question is being ans- wered by all of us. The inintediate issue is whether or not this question is being by you at WLU. The uni1'ersity's future environment, it must he renzemlnwed, is being shaped by our present actions-or lack of action. Tomorrow is too late to give sull- stance to the positive medium of student power. Environments are active processes only as we contribute now. He now holds the school record for most points scored in at single game. A guard with the basketball Hawks, defending O.I.A.A. champions, Pete has nzade his presence felt. Two years ago in a ganze against the University of Windsor, he hit for 27 of 30 foul shots, tieing the North American record. MIKE McMAHON Ktop rightj was this year's Central Canadian Inter-collegiate Football Conference all-star right guard The football Hawks had a strong rushing attack this past season. Efficient blocking by the offensive linemen nzade this possible. Mike, at 5'9l' and 180 lbs. was tough enough and quick enough to consistently spring the ball carrier. All-star honours are not only a recognition of McMahon but of Coach David Knight's ability to instill in all his players pride and a winning attitude. Football, basketball, and hockey as well as many minor sports were actively supported by the student body in the year 1967. Lutheran, one of the smaller universities in the O.I.A.A., produced 'HlClfL'i77'l1lHL results. Six teams finished first and two, second. Two individuals won top honours in their respective events. The six teams: football, basketball, tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis. The two teams which finished second: hockey and volleyball. The first INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT was held at State University College, Fredonia, N.Y. on December 1 and 2, 1967. The four participating universities, Fredonia, Genesco, McMaster and Waterloo Lutheran highlighted interna- tional involvement in sports A basketball dribblethon launched the tournament. One hundred students from both sides of the border dribbled a basketball the 175 miles from Watei'loo to Fredonia as part of the centennial celebrations for the State college. 101 FOOTBALL H WLU WLU WLU WLU WLU WLU WLU WLU There are worse things in life than a tninble on heather, and life is itself but a game of football. I, for one, know presidents are students in a real sense. During each day of university experience I learn from my associates, undergraduates, post-graduates, faculty members, staff and alumni. Like all of you, I appreciate opportunities to talk with others on campus in the academic and social setting. After each contact I carry something away that gives me new insights and understanding. The Waterloo Lutheran University is an unique one in educational and personal relationships. Life becomes more meaningful because of it. You establish life- time friendships with professors, staff and fellow students. Thank you for all you have contributed to my life. I extend congratulations as you join the thousands of men and won1en known as W.L.U. alumni. And best wishes to you as you go on to graduate studies, or enter business, industry or a profession. We are proud to have you represent Waterloo Lutheran University in the world community. Henry E ndress A cting President Fred L. Nichols M.S., B.S. Dean of Students fmww w4 WN Frank C. S f: 5, ffl!! '- K S' :if . M -s 1967-1968 has been a time of student awakening in Canada. In part, our campus has participated in this great re-evaluation of the university community. its aims and its ideals. Plans have been drafted for a new Student Council structure. Students have studied, discussed and criticized the Booz-Allen-Hamilton report. Because of the Haggar-Taylor incident, students have openly questioned the administrations idea that it is not the student's job to question. Across Canada, university yearbook editors have also begun to look critically at what they are doing. This look has been long overdue. Some vociferous members of the student body have advocated the complete abolition of yearbooks. The reasons for this opinion are worth considering. Is too much money being spent so that each person can have an antiquated, sentiment-ridden, poorly organized book to moon over in ten years? According to a small survey taken last spring on campus, most students still expressed a desire for a book of memories. So we have a Keystone this year. A Keystone filled with things to remember and things we have learned. Yearbooks need a lot of improvement and after a year Keystone '68 staff have become aware of future possibilities. More thought and boldness must become part of the yearbook! All of us-Eve, Sue, Jane, Marcia, Doreen, Joanne, Bruce and Dave-hope you are pleased with Keystone '68 and what we have added. B. J.
