ONTARIO PRESIDENT TELEPHONE: fS19J 744-8141 To the Class of l96l Congratulations upon reaching this milestone in your life of learning: Before stones are arranged to support one another and form an archway, they are a useless pile, When a stonemason organizes them to make an arch, a keystone holds them in place, Lives are like that. We are born with an arsenal of abilities and a bundle of emotions all with their own inherent centrifugal force. As we begin to assume more and more responsibility for our thoughts and actions, we essay to pull ourselves together on the basis of some vital concern that captures our loyalty. The central conviction of your life, the force which determines the use of your knowledge and resources, can be self-centeredness, You may strive for personal status at the expense of othersg for wealth--unmoved by povertyg for a life free from responsibility--expecting others to pro- vide for your welfare, If we acknowledge that modern life is never free from relationships with others, it is not difficult to see that a keystone of selfishness brings unhappiness, even disaster, The age-old biblical admonition to lose life so that we may find it has the ring of a technological society in which men work together, To give one's self in the service of fellow- men is the keystone that holds together the archway of a godly life, As you mount the platform to be admitted to the Convocation of gra- duates who have preceded you at this university, I am satisfied that you will have mastered the areas of knowledge that entitle each of you to receive an academic degree, I hope you will also have discovered and put in place the keystone for your life, God be with you, Yours sincerely, .f ff! , .fn 1 ff QQ-f4,,r-.g,-f' .Z wi11fEm.Ji viiiaume President WATERLOO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS WATERLOO LUTHERAN SEMINARY COUNCIL ON GRADUATE STUDIES IN ARTS GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK 9
