TO THE SEMINARY CLASS OF 1966 2 You are now graduates of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, an institution which a very small group of committed Christians bearing the name of the great reformer established lifty-live years ago and which their heirs have perpetuated through succeeding years oftimes with great personal sacrifice to prepare men for the ministry of their beloved church. Soon this church by the rite of ordination will separate you from its other laity by prayer and the laying on of hands that you may give yourself wholly to the proclamation of God's Word, to the administration of the Sacraments and to the pastoral care and service of God's people. This historic apostolic ministry commissioned by Christ will not disappear from the life and work of the church. To think otherwise is nonsense. ln our rapidly changing world new forms of ministry will undoubtedly emerge but none will supplant this specitic ministry. ln recent decades a new insight has been given to ministry by biblical scholars. namely . . . that to the minister is also given the work of directing the total activity of the church so that it fullills its corporate mission to mankind. The church is mission and 'its minister' is its servant directing it in its service to the world. To the entire people of God he must set an example of what their ministry in the world really is. He is a minister to ministers. He must prepare laymen to perform their individual and collective ministry within the church and world. To every Christian at baptism is committed ministry but to him who is set apart , ordained , is particularly given the ministry of equipping the saints for greater involvement in the life of the world, where Christ walked and won the victory of faith, where He now is l.ord of Life-all of it, the whole universe. 'l his new insight to ministry we commend to you. lnto such a ministry you now go, Christ is with you. Remember His kingly word: lie of good chcerg l have overcome the world. Enter into the Joy of your l.ord. Our prayers follow you. Aflectionately, J. Ray Houser, Principal. IB HOU ER THE REV J RAY
