To the Graduates of 1966: Give me a place to stand and I will move the world , boasted the Greek mathematician Archimedes. He con- ceived of the lever and the increase in mechanical power it could produce. Every man has abilities that constitute a lever to move the world , or at least change it for better or worse. Your years at Waterloo have endowed you with knowledge and, we hope, wisdom. They have enhanced your ability and improved your leverage. To what end? If you have acquired some perspective on life and some appreciation of the problem of man's in- ability to get along with man on this turbulent globe, your leverage will be activated by love for God and fellowmen. A university is only as great as its alumni-the depth of their understanding, the values to which they cling, the love they share, the life they live, the destiny they seek, and the dreams they dream. Move the world each day as though it were your last, and you will reflect honour upon yourself and your alma mater. TO THE SEMINARY CLASS OF 1966 2 You are now graduates of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, an institution which a very small group of committed Christians bearing the name of the great reformer established lifty-live years ago and which their heirs have perpetuated through succeeding years oftimes with great personal sacrifice to prepare men for the ministry of their beloved church. Soon this church by the rite of ordination will separate you from its other laity by prayer and the laying on of hands that you may give yourself wholly to the proclamation of God's Word, to the administration of the Sacraments and to the pastoral care and service of God's people. This historic apostolic ministry commissioned by Christ will not disappear from the life and work of the church. To think otherwise is nonsense. ln our rapidly changing world new forms of ministry will undoubtedly emerge but none will supplant this specitic ministry. ln recent decades a new insight has been given to ministry by biblical scholars. namely . . . that to the minister is also given the work of directing the total activity of the church so that it fullills its corporate mission to mankind. The church is mission and 'its minister' is its servant directing it in its service to the world. To the entire people of God he must set an example of what their ministry in the world really is. He is a minister to ministers. He must prepare laymen to perform their individual and collective ministry within the church and world. To every Christian at baptism is committed ministry but to him who is set apart , ordained , is particularly given the ministry of equipping the saints for greater involvement in the life of the world, where Christ walked and won the victory of faith, where He now is l.ord of Life-all of it, the whole universe. 'l his new insight to ministry we commend to you. lnto such a ministry you now go, Christ is with you. Remember His kingly word: lie of good chcerg l have overcome the world. Enter into the Joy of your l.ord. Our prayers follow you. Aflectionately, J. Ray Houser, Principal. IB HOU ER THE REV J RAY Everett A. It is an outgrowth of field surveys conducted by the university in Western Asia and Africa during the summers of 196-1 and 1965 under sponsorship of The Charles J. Strosacker Ifoundation. Midland. Michigan. The program leading to the Diploma in Business Administration combines on-campus study of the elements of administration, observation of Canadian industrial practice through plant visitation and seminars with management and linally on-the-job management experience in an industry of one's choice. During a Christmas trip to New York City, the International Fellows had an opportunity to xiexx the headquarters operations of such prominent world-wide organizations as International Business Machines Company, International Paper Company and Chas. Pfizer 61 Company. Inc. In eo-operation with the Canadian External Aid Office, 41 persons from 23 nations have come to Canada to take part in the program. Average age of the group is 30. Most are engaged in business in their home countries, with some owning their own companies. Waterloo Lutheran University salutes the International Fellows, not only for having done their work in most commendable fashion, but also for what they have accomplished as ambassadors in bringing to the campus and to their community at large, a better understanding and appreciation of their home lands. Pady PRI-lSl DENTS MESSAGE The structure of a university with its academic, social and intellectual societies helps in the matur- ing of each student It provides the atmosphere in which we can question and challenge our own and others beliefs thereby helping us to formulate more concrete ideas and principles to take out into the world The rapid growth of our university has had several repercussions which have combined to lessen its potential in providing a true community of learning atmosphere on this campus, Foremost among these is the failure to centralize our clubs and organizations which are the backbone of any campus. Secondly, this campus requires more rec- reation facilities and a centre for all the members ot' the college family - students, faculty, adminis- tration, alumni and guests. What is needed is an aflerguate Student Union Building which can pro- vide the unifying force essential to our campus. It should be the student social, cultural and gov- ernmental centre for the university. It is for these reasons that I strongly urge the future student leaders and students of Waterloo to work hard and to support a campaign for a new Student Union Building Graduation repr:-sents a major accomplishment for all of us, liut the real tr,-st will come when we try to attain our own individual goals in the quest for sa-lf satisfaction. Graduates, I wish you luck in your pursuit of success, and to those who re- main, l hope that you will continue to reap the ln,-ri4't'uts of univf-rsity, well maintaining its high standards and traditions, Su rotary Lynn Wood S U ENT CGUNCI.
