But what exactly is education to the people that are so much a part of Wiley . . . the faculty, the students, the graduates? Education is the transmis- sion of the knowledge of yesterday, to the scholars of today, who will expand that wisdom and apply it for tomorrow. Not only does education allow us to help ourselves to a better tomorrow, but it also allows us to teach others as we ourselves have been taught . . . the type of academic skills which leave much room open for individual expression and expansion. Proof of the success of our academic system is re- flected in successes of those who have come before us. Just as their successes have inspired us, so will ours to those who will follow us. What we learn now, whether it is an alegbraic formula, or the theme of -an ancient classic, it is necessary to us. For the knowledge we receive here is our sole foundation on our outcome for tomorrow. Mr. Moon eloquently expounded his unique philosophy, aiclerl by invaluable tools, books, anal huge storehouse qflfnowleclge. As the hand grasps the book so language grasps the ideas of the world. Language sturdy was an integral part of our English program. Looking toward the day when English will become the universal language, the English Department of Wiley paved the road to success with bricks of fluent communication. Students were encouraged to express themselves with one of man's greatest gifts, that of speech, and were seasoned with the thoughts and works of their fore- fathers, both American and foreign. The material covered by this very im- portant department ranged from the teachings of Socrates, Aristotle and Plato to the Theatre of the Absurd and Shakespearefs sonnets, all of which was presented in a most interesting fashion. Some of the many courses that were offered were trigonometry, geometry. algebra. calculus. and advanced mathematics. These classes have helped strengthen and build the minds of Wiley students and to better prepare them for the outside world of today where mathematics is so im- portant. R Mr. Hardesty worked hard to teach his math students the neederl material. Algebra and Geometry faced many sophomores like Steve Thompson. They have learned to speak and write a second language. as well as become familiar with other countries' customs. cultures, and history. Languages offered this year included French, German, Latin and Spanish. Mrs. Riddle taught Spanish, lVlr. Slaymaker, German. Miss Johnson, Latin, and lVlr. Wlhitesell, and Miss Chalos, French. These patient. helpful teachers aided students in becoming fluent in their respective languages. Thanks to these teach- ers, students learn language skills they will need in later life. They may take up to three years of each language, except Latin, which offers four. French and Spanish also offer four, if the demand is great. Art classes made several trips to the Swope Art Gallery to view local artists work. The an- nual lawn art show was a great success as the artists displayed their numerous works. The devoted 1970 yearbook staff was dedicated to the proposition that it is possible to capture the essence of an entire school year in a mere 216 pages. The yearbook gave students the op- portunity to develop leadership and fellowship qualities. lts goal was to expose students to the arts ol' layout, photography, and copy. To supply funds the yearbook conducted a few pay assemblies. In the spring we had a banquet where we honored three ol' our groupg Nancy Petty. Lee Ann Bond and Paula Wardell with special awards for their outstand- ing contributions. S Adviser Susan Davis S K .M P. Wardell and N. Lindley cropped pictures on the light box. X PORT Succeeding and losing, triumph and the agony of loss, a welcome victory, or a heartbreaking de- feat, were all tense moments. We were all moved, with the excitement-participants and observers alike. The competition was great, sometimes far more superior that we. We learned from our mistakes. We learned that winning takes a combined effort of everyone involved-the players, the coaches, and the fans. We learned that sometimes we wouldnit have enough effort, and we would lose. The spirit and excitement at the kicking, throwing, running and yelling was enough to show others that we were proud at being a part of Wiley High School-a very significant part. During the athletic seasons much was done around Wiley to boost spirit and morale. Our band, Streaks and cheerleaders helped to give the school an excited atmosphere-only sulpassed by the student body at assemblies. We learned our teams would be triumphant only with a loyal crowd be- hind them. Yes we learned . . . learned in our yesterdays, that will he our inevitable tomorrows. ,Ji-I H- Xwwaf A 5 1 x k--. .K X 3 y V s . W I X 5 1, 5 . ' C Q , XXX is i Y, ..,,. Like one who wraps the drapery ofhis couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. -Thanatopsis William Cullen Bryant John Li ngen feltner-1 968 THE CLASS OF 1971 This year, the class of nineteen- seventy-one elected its officers and the Executive Committee, who worked hard to make the junior classas activities a great success. These sixteen students, along with the sponsor, Mr. Joe Marcinko, helped to plan and carry out the Junior Prom, A Time For Usf' which was en- joyed by many juniors and their dates. Every year Wiley's junior class shows much promise, and 1969-70's was no exception, ex- pecially when led by such able officers and talented executives. lVlr. Marcinko, who was also the speech and debate coach, do- nated much valuable time to the class of 'seventy-one. The Junior Class was ejfciently run by Treasurer Lynn Hoelsclzer, Vice President Chuck Adam- son., President Jolzlz Bailey. and Secrelrzry Janet Boyle. I I SEATED: S. Hart, A. Stillman, C. The life and spirit it represents will be enjoyed again and a g a in throughout the years. Much time, effort and money goes into its making. Most schools depend on some type of advertising to finance the yearbook. Other than the financial aid it represents, what actually are the merits of advertising? Much attention should be directed towards the student body. Because much money passes through their hands, they are a very important market to the merchants. The yearbook is one of the few ways in which this market can be reached. There is a great misunderstanding about yearbook advertising. Some say the merchant who places his advertisement in the yearbook is giving a mere charitable donation. If one would stop and consider the large number of yearbooks which are printed, he would see that this isn'1 true. The merchant will receive multiple benefits for many years--as his ad will be read and re-read by his present customers as well as those who are to come. These acts that help to support us, will tomorrow be our yesterday, but the appreciation derived from them will not be forgotten.
