This year a new tradition was begun at Wildwood Catholic- HOMECOMING. The Student Council planned the weekend of October 24th for the activities. Friday afternoon the soccer team battled Lower Cape May Region- al to a dynamic finish. Later that same evening, students gathered together at Montgomery Avenue and the beach for a bon fire where the 1986 Homecoming Court was first introduced. The court con- sisted of seniors Pat MacFarlane, Andy Weis, Dennis Leahy and Juniors Danny Leahy and Artie Cowan. On Saturday night, a semi-formal dance was held at St. Ann’s Hall. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of our homecoming king, Pat MacFarlane, escorted by Karyn Strawley. Our king and queen led the court in a spot light dance. The activities were a great success and the student body had a memora- ble weekend. We wish to thank Mr. Kubiak and the student council for dedicating their time and effort to this new W.C.H.S. tradition. Mock Trial Mock Trial is a state wide competition sponsored by the N.J. Bar Association. The main idea is to familiarize the students with the law and to increase their interest in legal proceedings. Through this activity the stu- dents learn and understand the meaning of good citizenship. Our students, under the coaching of Mr. David Meyers, an attorney at law, have prepared a case, based on fact, which they themselves will present to a jury. For the first time in Wild- wood Catholic’s history, the girls’ tennis team captured the South Jersey, Parochial B Championship with an overall record of 12-3. Coach Connor and the team traveled to Waretown, N.J. to face Mater Dei High School. A 5-0 victory sent the Crusaders on to the state championship to challenge the North Jersey Champs, Montclair Kimberly. Unfor- tunately, our girls fell to the opponents, despite a strong effort. Although wc at Wildwood Catholic always aspire to an emphasis upon the collec- tive unit of the team, as opposed to the individual, an interscholastic athletics, it is both fitting and proper that wc devote some space in this record of the year's events to three outstanding accomplishments of three remarkable athletes. We therefore salute Kate Caruso for her having entered the Crusader girls basket- ball 1,000 point club on Feb. 10, 1987 with a record setting 40 point one game performance. On this day Kate became the fourth girl in school history to achieve the thousand point milestonejoining Terri Grasso, Michele Tarbotton, and W.C. super- star Mary Gavin. Five days earlier, junior Dan Leahy registered a history making basket as his thirteenth and fourteenth points of the evening placed his name among those of both his father and older brother on the Wildwood Catholic boys basketball 1,000 points scored list. As the seventh player to score a thousand points in Crusader history, Dan became the first male to do so in his junior year. Wc congratulate Dan as well! We round out our acknowledgement of the terrific trio of athletes pictured here by honoring soccer team captain Pat MacFarlane, whose winning of the Philadelphia Inquirer’s South Jersey Most Valuable Player Award is unprecedented among Cru- sader athletes. Never has a representative of Wildwood Catholic athletics garnered such a distinguished and rare honor! Pat leaves us this year with the school records for most goals scored in one season and one career, and most exciting memories generat- ed, ever! As athletic director I can honestly say that each of these student athletes is as fine a person as one could hope to meet. Wc wish you continued success in the future! For the past eight years many changes have occurred within Wildwood Catholic High School. Most of these changes have been through the tremen- dous effort and persistence of our principal, Sister Marie Rudegeair. The introduction of new curriculum such as computer science courses, math- ematics courses and advanced placement programs are but a few of the innovations brought into being by Sister’s wisdom and foresight. Recognizing the need for change in some of the school facilities Sister Marie has implemented many improvements. The renovation of the faculty dining room and cafeteria, the auditorium, and the media center are but a few examples of her desire to make Wildwood Catholic a better school in which to grow scholastically, physically and spiritually. When I began asking Father questions, he thought it would be best if he just told me how he felt about Wildwood Catholic and his job here. When he came to Wildwood Catholic his attitude was, and still is, that he is a priest. He never thought of himself as a “teacher”, or even now, as a “Vice Principal”. He considers himself “Father to a family” and, like any good father, he wants to take care of his family as best he can.
