It was a year worth remembering. It was a year when the biggest movie star was a little guy named Artoo-De- too. It was the year that the Concorde nosed its way into American airports, that Atlantic City prepared for its new role as “Las Vegas East , and that the lights went out in New York. It was in 1977 that George Willig, the Human Fly , scaled the World Trade Tower, that Bishop John N. Neumann became Saint John, and that Anita Bry- ant left the Florida Sunshine Tree long enough to crusade against gay rights. It was the year of Farrah Fawcett. Margaret Trudeau, and Claudine Lon- get. In the year that passed, the nation mourned the deaths of four legends; film comedians Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin. The King of Rock and Roir, Elvis Presley, and the man who sold more records than any other art- ist. Bing Crosby. Evel Knieval's latest stunt — assault- ing a writer with a baseball bat — was even less successful than his attempt to jump the snake river canyon. He landed not in the river, but in prison to serve a six month sentence. It was the year of such characters as Johnny Rotten , and Sid Vicious , as “Punk Rock was banned from Eng- lish radio and television because of the vulgarity displayed in concert. Dodgers fell to the New York Yankees in the World Series, as Reggie Jackson slugged five home- runs. three in one game. Steve Carlton of the Phillies won the Cy Young Award, and Lou Brock broke the record for stolen bases. Even truckloads of snow, transport- ed to Dallas, didn't help the Minnesota Vikings feel at home during the NFC playoffs. The Cowboys, who generated almost as much enthusiasm as their cheerleaders, advanced to Super Bawl XII, where as they coughed up the ball eight times. Both teams were plaqued by injuries, but Dallas limped away World Champions, winning by a score of 27 to 10. A young jockey named Steve Cauthen galloped to fame, breaking one record after another. Named Sportsman of the Year . Cauthen be- came the first rider in history to earn five million dollars in one season. In basketball. Julius (Dr. J.) Erving slam-dunked his way to victory, with a little help from the Philadelphia Seven- ty-Sixers. In the ring, underdog Leon Spinks battled defending champ Muhammad Ali. and emerged the heavyweight champion of the world. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far. far away ... there was Star Wars . This picture became the most colossal suc- cess in film history. It starred Mark Ha- mill. Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, but the names we'll most likely remem- ber are C-3PO. R2D2, and Darth Vader. May the Force be with you. Continuing with the Sci-Fi trend, and threatening to dethrone Star Wars , was Close Encounters of the Third Kind , destined to be the biggest blockbuster movie yet.
