Seniors Then... Wildwood Catholic High School North Wildwood, N.J. Class of '78 remembers Joseph McCullough (’77) May he rest in peace Administration Of Camden Monsignor Glendon Robertson, M.A., PH.D. Secretary for Education The Most Reverend George H. Guilfoyle, D.D., LL.D. Bishop of Camden Reverend James R. Tracy, S.T.L., PH.D. Superintendent of Schools 2 3 Administration Sr. Henrietta Maria June, 1978 Dear Seniors, You have now completed your high school days! During these years in Wildwood Catho- lic you have experienced moments of var- ious kinds. Some of those moments, per- haps, were full of darkness, some of metallic sunshine, and frequently there were mo- ments of regretful grey clouds. Yet, they all are molders of this present moment. Now you are at the moment of the future. You are shyly facing it at times, and yet you show boldness now and again. You are eager for graduation, college, marriage, as you fearfully seek obscurity at the thought of surging ahead. Yes, I feel that you mind leaving old friends, advancing from high school days to finding your place in a computerized world with a depersonalized society. I pray for your courage to encounter your world yet to come! Sincerely yours, Msgr. Joseph Conlin 4 Fr. Kenneth Johnston Mr. Samuel Stubbs Social Studies ... A.B.. M.A. ... Birthplace- Philadelphia. Simonini 23 It was a year worth remembering. It was a year when the biggest movie star was a little guy named Artoo-De- too. It was the year that the Concorde nosed its way into American airports, that Atlantic City prepared for its new role as “Las Vegas East , and that the lights went out in New York. It was in 1977 that George Willig, the Human Fly , scaled the World Trade Tower, that Bishop John N. Neumann became Saint John, and that Anita Bry- ant left the Florida Sunshine Tree long enough to crusade against gay rights. It was the year of Farrah Fawcett. Margaret Trudeau, and Claudine Lon- get. In the year that passed, the nation mourned the deaths of four legends; film comedians Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin. The King of Rock and Roir, Elvis Presley, and the man who sold more records than any other art- ist. Bing Crosby. Evel Knieval's latest stunt — assault- ing a writer with a baseball bat — was even less successful than his attempt to jump the snake river canyon. He landed not in the river, but in prison to serve a six month sentence. It was the year of such characters as Johnny Rotten , and Sid Vicious , as “Punk Rock was banned from Eng- lish radio and television because of the vulgarity displayed in concert. It was a year that saw people brutally murdered by a madman who called himself Son of Sam . In Sports, the L.A. Dodgers fell to the New York Yankees in the World Series, as Reggie Jackson slugged five home- runs. three in one game. Steve Carlton of the Phillies won the Cy Young Award, and Lou Brock broke the record for stolen bases. Even truckloads of snow, transport- ed to Dallas, didn't help the Minnesota Vikings feel at home during the NFC playoffs. The Cowboys, who generated almost as much enthusiasm as their cheerleaders, advanced to Super Bawl XII, where as they coughed up the ball eight times. Both teams were plaqued by injuries, but Dallas limped away World Champions, winning by a score of 27 to 10. A young jockey named Steve Cauthen galloped to fame, breaking one record after another. Named Sportsman of the Year . Cauthen be- came the first rider in history to earn five million dollars in one season. In basketball. Julius (Dr. J.) Erving slam-dunked his way to victory, with a little help from the Philadelphia Seven- ty-Sixers. In the ring, underdog Leon Spinks battled defending champ Muhammad Ali. and emerged the heavyweight champion of the world. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far. far away ... there was Star Wars . This picture became the most colossal suc- cess in film history. It starred Mark Ha- mill. Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, but the names we'll most likely remem- ber are C-3PO. R2D2, and Darth Vader. May the Force be with you. Continuing with the Sci-Fi trend, and threatening to dethrone Star Wars , was Close Encounters of the Third Kind , destined to be the biggest blockbuster movie yet. The Year President Carter Roger Staubach Saint John N. Neumann Bert Lance Reggie Jackson Steve Cauthen Elvis Presley 1935-197 7 Groucho Marx 1895-1977 . That Was Star Wars Son of Sam “Saturday Night' George Willig Steve Martin Fleetwood Mac This picture, about contact with alien beings, stressed the conviction. “We are not alone . On Broadway, crowds were drawn to such hit musicals as Annie , and A Chorus Line , and Radio City Music Hall, home of the Rockettes , an- nounced it would close its doors be- cause of financial problems. On the small screen. Church groups were apalled. and liberals enthused, as the provocative comedy. Soap , pre- miered in primetime. Another popular favorite was NBC’s late night comedy. Saturday Night Live . A bright new comedian by the name of Steve Martin burst into our lives with an exagerrated, Well, exc-u-u-u-se me! , and a hit album entitled. Let’s Get Small . In the world of music. Fleetwood Mac” broke all records with their smash album. Rumours”, which is closing in on eight million sales — that’s octoplatinum. The Bee Gees remained on the Pop Music scene with the soundtrack from the film. Saturday Night Fever . Other moneymaking discs were Boz Scaggs’. Silk Degrees . Stevie Won- der’s. Songs in the Key of Life”, and the Eagles’. Hotel California . It was a year when people pushed astrology aside, and took an interest in Biorythms. a new science which pre- dicts physical and emotional highs”, and criticals . One person who was evidently at a critical” was the confused American who told the people of Poland, among other things, that President Carter had abandoned the United States. Carter began the first year of his term surrounded by a rather colorful family. His young daughter. Amy. re- quested a chainsaw for Christmas. Brother Billy left his gas station and peanut business in Plains to promote Redneck Power , and to endorse a new product. Billy Beer . Billy ex- plained that the reason he was earning two and half times more than his brother was simply because he worked harder. The President's close friend. Budget Director Bert Lance, was force to re- sign when his astronomical overdrafts at the Calhoun National Bank were re- vealed. Idi Amin Dada, President of Uganda, captured the world’s attention with his strange and dangerous antics. He for- bad all Americans living in his country to leave Uganda, because of a deroga- tory statement spoken by President Carter, which concerned Amin. On August 18. 1977. surgeons dis- covered that Senator Hubert Hum- phrey had terminal Cancer, and on Fri- day. the 13th of January. 1978. Hum- phrey died. After thirty years of war. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, and Prime Minis- ter Manachem Begin of Israel, met to seek peace between their nations.Only time will determine the success of these meetings, but the interest in peace these men commonly share is certainly a step in the right direction.
