Amscnpt 1951 PUBLISHED BV WILPWOOP CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL WILDWOOD........................° . NEW JERSEY JIUJYJVM What the world needs, if it is to be saved, is not more guns, dreadnaughts, or bombing planes—but more character in its citizens. The qualities of character and good leadership are being shaped in the classrooms of Wildwood Catholic. We are trying to develop the whole man and woman so as to prepare them to march onward foursquare into the adult world, not only to fall meekly into the ways of the world, but to be outstanding leaders in their own field of endeavor. The most impressionable years of this develop- ment are the high school years. The entire faculty has worked harmoniously and tirelessly for and with the student body and endeavored to guide each student spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially. The Catholic high school student is given solid principles upon which to build. He must learn these things well and understand them thor- oughly so that they can apply them to the problems con- fronting them. We are preparing a firm foundation for useful and intelligent leadership in a land of opportunity. TO CATHOLIC LEADERSHIP BISHOP OF CAMDEN Right Reverend Monsignor Aloysius S. Quinlan GOLDEN JUBILEE GREETINGS This year we celebrate the golden jubilee of Right Reverend Monsignor A. S. Quinlan. He was ordained June I. 1901, in the Trenton Cathedral. Monsignor was trans- ferred to Wildwood in February, 1943. Under his able guidance the dream of Wildwood Catholic High School became a reality. We join the citizens of Wildwood to honor our Pastor. To him we extend sincere greetings on the occasion of his fiftieth year as a Priest. We are indeed proud of Monsignor Quinlan and his outstanding accom- plishments. Oeci £eeulen. At the left can be ssen Margaret Conover showing Joan Brodesser how these deli- cacies can be packed. At the right Margaret Wurster very carefully measures gift wrapping that will add to the en- joyment of the cookies. Theresa Serge, a Senior, reminds her co- workers that the success of the Year Book patron drive depends upon the united effort of all the classes. The Seniors have set the pace. Eager to follow their example are Margaret Conover, Kathleen Gorman, and Fred Mattera. campaign leaders of the other sections. 'putccie 7(J vdd Toddy's training makes for tomorrow's success in busi- ness. Martin Schlosser prepares the mimeograph machine to take off copies of the school paper, while Joseph La Molte makes a final examination of the copy. As the students turn homeward after a busy day with their books tucked under thsir arms they are reminded of the work still ahead of them. While preparing for the world of tomorrow, they have the job of upholding the name of Wildwood Catholic, striving always to fulfill its motto Fides et Scientia. Betty Alioto and Arthur Smith seem eager to uphold our motto. 'Kl ene ccuCen Cfr Detft zttd att j4cLj tAtect, (veil These Freshmen are introduced early to the value of a panel discussion in clarifying debatable issues. John Wallace utilizes a map to enhance his opinions on the topic. Members of the panel are Anastasia DeMedio, Dianne Owens, Gertrude Davis, Charles Halladay, and Richard Keough. There is something fascinating in the discovery of one's latent artistic ability. These interested young people look forward to their art class with considerable enthusiasm. J net Hendrie demonstrates how to put in the finishing daubs that give a professional touch to their water color outdoor scene. 10 Salattced 'PenAMiaUty Our young scientists learn the mysteries of research work in the laboratory. They unearth science, of which they knew very little, prior to this year. In the foreground we see Laura Morton and Evelyn Kranich examining their rare specimens, while Margaret Webb and Mary Ann Crilley take notes on the discoveries they have made. The heart, being such a vital organ, deserves careful study. The Sophomore girls’ health class is engrossed in the explanation of the structure and functions of the human heart, ably pointed out by Miss Brennan, our school nurse, assisted by Nancy Ward and Evelyn Kranich. Star Geometry students, John Toy and James Leah , demonstrate their ability at the board. Sister Stanislaus Kostka is on the alert for any discrepancies that might develop. Animated faces of the class show an interest that predicts a suc- cessful career for these young men. M 0 0 0 on 'KaoivCecLye . . . ( urco ctcf And this is the way we do it. These Junior seamstresses are seriously intent upon the completion of their first sewing project, a serving apron for their Mother's valentine. From left to right, Rita Nestore, Mildred Dickinson, Eileen Quinn, Margaret Wurster, and Helen Turchi. The Juniors, under the direction of Jacqueline Gory and Terry Lynch, discuss the numerous ways of Honoring God's Mother. Mildred Needles stresses the influence of Our Lady in protecting our nation. Future homemakers are first introduced to home eco- nomics in their junior year. Donning crisp aprons they work with sauce pans and mixing bowls for half the year and then change to sewing classes. Here a group is shown in an after breakfast chat with Monsignor. Seniors eagerly compare likenesses when the much coveted pictures arrive. Facing the camera, Joseph La Motte confidently shows his picture to. Rosalie Maggio, whose calm appraisal of the photograph leaves nothing to be desired. Physics was introduced to Wildwood Catholic this year. War has stimulated a keen interest in this fascinating subject. Physics is offered to the Senior boys and girls. The picture shows Theresa Serge and Robert Scully performing an experiment on linear expansion. tad t e j4 variette4A 'Duty The stage crew receives final instructions from Mary Monichetti who coached a one-act play by Father Lord. This was presented in conjunc- tion with the Senior Religion class. Cooperative effort brings results as is sezn by the eager expression on Marjorie Dona- hue's face as she displays the end of a long search for ma- terial for their English class. The students who share this effort are: Marie Alioto, Fury Tassoni, and Ann Boyle. Wildwood Catholic stocks her magazine racks with out- standing periodicals. She hopes to develop good read- ing habits in the future citi- zens and leaders. Here Bar- bara Ann Quinn is pointing out to Leo Kelly an article in the Catholic School Journal. And t e Actiae Student 7d Student government is one of the most important and neces sary functions in school life. The student council at Wildwood Catholic consists of a President and Vice-President, chosen from the senior class, and two representatives from each class. The royal blue and white ribbon of distinction stands for the added responsibility of obedience and service to the high standards on which Wildwood Catholic was established. Our student council provides government of the students, by the students, and for the students. The council meets twice a month with President, Robert Clothier, presiding. Sister Louise Bertrand is on hand in the capacity of advisor. Our council aims to prepare students for their position in life by stressing the importance and necessity of cooperation with associates and obedience to those in authority. It trains students to I Sotccetefrct ( cacc eactesi be leaders, to develop Initiative, and to use their authority wisely. The student officers themselves benefit greatly by this organi- zation, because it gives them a deep and sympathetic understanding of the problems of their fellow students. What better preparation for future citizenship? Here is our student council at work. Robert Clothier, president of the student council, re- ports to the student body the outcome of a recant meeting. Council members may be dis- tinguished by a royal blue and white badge. Alfonso Gredone, before an eager assembly, presents his views on our Constitution as his fellow-contestants in the American Legion Oratorical Contest anxiously await their turn. Oca (fytni UncLd, 'Ptcuf HOLY NIGHT Holy Night, a miracle play in three scenes by Gregorio Martinez Sierra was presented by the students of Wildwood Catholic in preparation for the feast of Christmas. The theme of the play im- presses us with the fact that Christ comes into the world to all people, poor and rich alike. Everyone was aware of the special message of Peace On Earth To Men of Good Will. Gloria Ors, representing the Blessed Virgin was very ably assisted by members of the student body who strove to make this a never-to-be-forgotten occasion. Ralph Valeri, representing St. Francis, appeals to Our Lady (Gloria Ors) that she have pity on the poor and oppressed. Our Lady smilingly grants St. Francis' request. 4 Penned Tfteeuu S%fenetei Ht On February 2 and 5, Wildwood Catholic and friends were transported to the home of a New England family in Mother Carey s Chickens. The scene opened on a clean but empty room in the Yellow House in Beulah. Mrs. Carey and her chickens, ranging in age from 5 to 18, turn the old house into a warm, happy home. The story introduces us to Ossion Popham and his family, the stern Mr. Lord and his painter son Cyril, Cousin Ann and the snobbish Julia, school teacher Ralph Thurston, and the romantic interest, Tom Hamilton. The main thread of the story is woven about a will, which unknown to the Carey Family, legally grants their house to Tom Hamilton. The complications which arose from this situation provided amusing entertainment for all. ROSALIE MAGGIO Nancy Carey i— Gilbert Care . Mother m -i if( - Wildwood Catholic Songsters have entertained enthusiastic audiences several times during the year. The theme of the Senior Play was enhanced by such musical numbers as 'Be My Love. Suc £ tciea(Aox axe a 'rtyaxntMCf 'Puxfta e Colorful gowns, lilting music, spectacular finale, all under the skillful direction of Guglielmo Sabatini, emphasize the spirit of the annual music festival held annually at Wildwood Catho- lic High School. From small beginnings our school has each year added some new feature to the fes- tival that makes it a delight to all who attend. The programs are arranged to satisfy the taste of young and old. Everyone responds to the beauty of Tschaikowsky's Nutcracker Suite which is the feature for the concert this year. Young people were captivated by Swanee , and Soldier, Soldier. The patriotic theme of the finale will live long in the memory of those who witnessed it. The Glee Club paid tribute to the golden anniversary of Right Reverend Monsignor Quinlan by devoting a part of the program to him. These numbers included Beethoven's The Heavens Are Declaring , The Rosary by Nevin, and Regina Coeli by Giorza. iad rf ard a Scare 'PCea ctte One of the most delightful numbers on the program Gloria Ors and Betty Lou Zintner give a charming was Early California. Rosalie Maggio narrated the story interpretation of the waltz, of these early settlers to the delight of all who heard it. TVitA t e dfrUcUutce Retreat time is grace time for the stu- dents of Wildwood Catholic. Every year, during the solemn and beautiful days of Holy Week, students and faculty alike put aside the trials of a workaday world and enter fully into the spirit of this sacred occasion. Father Zeits of the Jesuit order held the retreatants spellbound with his eloquence and his piety. Everyone felt spiritually refreshed after the retreat and re- turned to their duties with renewed interest and zeal. In addition to a prescribed schedule of re- ligious activities, the retreatants were permitted to satisfy their personal devotions. Some of these students are making the stations of the Cross. In the foreground, Bob Clothier, recites the Rosary. Each morning during the Retreat everyone hod the opportunity of attending the Sacraments. Here a group of girls return from the reception of Holy Communion. j4 'i¥e zveaCy 7wte fact faf rfd Highlight of the mid-winter season for the seniors and juniors was the Prom held at the Wildwood Catholic High School gymnasium on January 19.
