Wilby High sponsored what is becoming one of the most important activities during the school year. That was when the Student Council and the Allied Health classes teamed up the local chapter of the American Red Cross Bioodmobiie's visit to the school. The Media Center was turned into a giant hospital ward that day, full of cots, bag hangers, nurses' stations, and, of course, nurses. Members of the Student Council, under the direction of their advisor. Mrs. Ferraro per- formed a variety of functions, ranging from tak- ing vital information, explaining procedures, clerical duties, escorting donors, and running the snack canteen. The students in the Allied Health program got up close to the action, as assistants to the nurses who were taking blood. They also took the temperatures of prospective donors, and later helped the woozy blood-givers off the tables and to the food canteen. Miss Mahaney oversaw their efforts. In all, over Fifty pints of blood were collected by the Red Cross during their visit. Students and teachers alike donated. Some did it be- cause they knew the value of their blood to others in need. Others contributed for the experience of giving blood. Many, though, did it for one reason only; the snack canteen that awaited each donor at the end of their ordeal. Cookies, doughnuts, and juice were unlimited, handed out in order to help do- nors regain their lost strength.
