Wilby High School Class Of 1988 Waterbury, Connecticut The 1988 yearbook mascot Wilbur, the creative wildcat, admires an example of his handiwork. He’s just a gigolo, and every where he goes Byron Trent is in demand with the ladies. Looking like women of the 90 s, Vick King and Jericha Council dress up in silk and lace for the Homecoming ceremony. Some of Wilby’s Homecoming royalty” relax casually at the Homecoming game. Top student- artist Mari Cardona adds another leg to a spidery’ creation. These Wilbyites look off to the future with dreams of spring. Although the Football team didn't always capture the school's attention on the field. they'll go out of their way for notice in the school cafeteria. It looks like Joe Russo got the message who former Dallas Cowboy linebacker Bill Rowe spoke at an anti-drug assembly. Hey, who would disagree with someone as big as him? Business was booming at this senior class car wash. Girls just wanna have fun. as Antoinette Harmon. Tamara Meyers. Kcisha Mathis.and Tric.a Parker prove And why not, with these poster children. at n assembly Wilbur put the final piece of his latest creation in place- a portrait of some key Homecoming participants Would you feel safe standing next to this man when he has a hose in his hand? Mr. Serafinc supervised the Senior car washes. Thoughts of graduation seems to be running through the heads of these happy seniors. Cold chillin' for the people arc Rubin Patterson, Raymond Perry, Although he thought dressing like a cheerleader was a and James Peel. (Wilbur is cold chisclin) funny idea at the time, we wonder if this is the kind of picture Tracey Douglas will show his children. Finding a quiet corner, Maria Alves Finishes some last-minute homework. Three lovely Seniors, beam- ing with Wilby pride, are Randi Eason. Val Pearce, and Tamara Meyers. edicatco i This year, we show our appreciation to our class advisors, Mr. Scott Serafine and Mrs. Michelle Tuttle by honoring them with our yearbook dedi- cation. We hope the years with our class have been as enjoyable for them as it has been for us. We thank them for caring enough to help make our senior year the best. 7ftc ccte Besides our class advisers, the Class of 1988 would like to pay special tribute to a faculty member who will always be re- membered by those lucky enough to pass her way. She is Mrs. Nancy Cable, that fun, energetic, and understanding mem- ber of the English department. When asked what made Mrs. Cable so special to them, her students had many varied responses. Senior Tasha Douglas put it this way, She's more like a mother to us than a teacher. She is always known to be compassionate, friendly, helpful, and full of life. Mrs. Cable's stu- dents claim that she goes above expec- tions in her dealings with them and has proved to be a friend in need (including funds, from time to time). On top of this is her unique style, her cute smile, and excellent taste in clothes. Mari Cardona described her as with it. Put all this together and you've got a person worthy of a tribute-you’ve got Mrs. Nancy Cable. Tribute 1 L_e These folks worked hard (and cheaj even during the summer months in q I der to increase senior revenues. d mettuvuf Rounia Hinton pauses at her locker to have a chat with Gloria Marryatt. Don't be late for class. Rounia! It's fuel like this, and lots of it, that keeps Playboys Steve McCombs and Dave Nazario try to get chummy with cuties basketball dynamo Phil Lott going. Mayra Maldonado and Nancy Moreno. Making like a budding artist, Ken Capaldo tries his hand at a likeness of his history sub. Not bad! At the Bloodmobile, Richard Norwood figures this might be his last chance to flee, while the nurse s back is turned. Katie Trudeau. Stephanie Gardner, and Becky King realize they have to plan for next year as they attend the annual College Fair. SENIORS Officers With Class! The officers of the Class of 1988 came to their positions in a very unusual way. For the first time in recent memory all officers ran essentially unopposed and were able to come into their offices in a new ‘Era Of Good Feeling.'' Class President Dean Schuster had a bit of a battle against junior class president Pam Harris. until Pam dropped from the race at the eleventh hour. Dean proved to be a president full of ideas with which to make senior year more eventful and memorable. Candace Eggleston moved up from being class secretary to senior vice presi- dent. where she proved to be hard-work- ing and determined. Jodi Saltzman also held class office during both years. She served as treasurer of the class as a junior and senior. She could be counted on to keep control of a meeting and keep the group on their tasks. Carmelina Cavallo was elected secre- tary this year, and proved to be quite a diplomat when meetings got heated. These are the people that helped Mrs. Tuttle and Mr. Sera fine plan and organize the fund- raisers and special events of the Class of 1988. Thanks a lot! WILLIAM ADANOSKY Bill. Gourmet Society A Hit With Diners The Wilby Gourmet Society has. over the past few years, been quietly becoming one of the most hard-working and accomplished organiza- tions in the school. Under the guidance of top- notch chef and teacher. Mr. Milo Flannery, they cater a multitude of Wilby functions, both during and after school hours. The time when they really get to show their stuff, though, is when they hold their Gourmet Society Dinner. This year's was their third annual event, called the Buffet Extravaganza . and what an extravaganza it was. The gathering was kept small, involving about one hundred lucky diners. They were greeted with a sparkling fruit punch and a variety of appetizers including macedoine of legumes (fresh veggies to the layman), an array of cruditte (cheese, fruits, vegetables, etc.) an assortment of canapes, and charcuterie (assorted cold cuts). Soon afterward the entrees were brought out. Guests could choose any or all of the following gourmet items: Pasta Primavera, Sausage A1 Bourgeoise. Seafood Kidigree, Dutchess Potato, fresh antipasto, carved top round of beef with the Gou,m wic«e p. $wans sauces, and or roast ham with Kentucky bourbon sauce. Dinner was capped with a beautiful assortment of pastries and delicacies and coffee for those who had room for them. The entire menu had a great deal of class and style. As the guests dined. Gourmet Society members rushed around, constantly serving. cleaning, and replenishing. In the kitchen the temperature was high and the work hectic, as Mr. Flannery kept his chefs go- ing throughout the dinner. Once again the Gourmet Society dinner proved to be a complete success, with the only losers being those who missed the opportunity to enjoy the feast. The profits made from such fund raisers are what makes a class able to pay for activities such as proms, ring ceremo- nies, etc. This year, the senior class sponsored six fund raisers. Although not every one brought a great profit, overall they were fun. The first one of the year was the most successful. The seniors sold assort- ed candy and chocolates. Almost every- one put time and effort into this fund raiser and the result was a substantial increase in the senior class treasury. One of the most noteworthy fund rais- ers was the Wilby sweatshirts Logo Con- test and Sale. It started out with a lot of enthusiasm, as students throughout the school entered logos into a contest. Erik West's design was chosen as the best. Unfortunately, the sweatshirts didn't sell as well as anticipated, but it was a very good idea anyway, right The class also sponsored two car washes that were both successful and a lot of fun, candy bar sales (not sold in school, though, Mr. Leonardi), glass mug sales, and ceramic mugs for seniors. Senior class members who put in extra time and effort with fund raisers included James Stack. Angel LeVasseur. Patty Lopez, and Gertie A fable. SUZANNE ERB Sue. Sukie. Lisa Give me a break! . Saluting Wilby’s Brightest! During the last several years, the year- book has taken this space to take notice of those five seniors whose intellect and effort have propelled them to the top of their class academically. This year is no different. First we recognize the Class of 1988 s valedictorian Paul Fruin. He’s always enjoyed math and science and plans to continue studying them in pursuit of an engineering degree at Cornell University. Dean Schuster earned the salutatori - an award. Dean’s term as class president seems to have whetted his appetite for elected office, as he plans to study politi- cal science at Duke University. Dean al- ways did enjoy history courses, and ex- celled in art, also. Ranked third is Gayle Mazzaferro. Gayle enjoys math and science and will study biological science at the University of Connecticut. Sonya Sykes ranks fourth after four years at Wilby. She will take her natural intelligence and love of studying to St. Augustine College in Raliegh N.C., and apply them to her interest in mathematics and science. Rounding out the list is Andrea Morisette. Andrea will enter Wesleyan University in the fall and pursue a degree in education, with the goal of teaching biology in the future. Congratulations to all five, and to all the others in the Class of ’88 who did their very best to reach their potential in the classrooms of Wilby High School. Wilby High sponsored what is becoming one of the most important activities during the school year. That was when the Student Council and the Allied Health classes teamed up the local chapter of the American Red Cross Bioodmobiie's visit to the school. The Media Center was turned into a giant hospital ward that day, full of cots, bag hangers, nurses' stations, and, of course, nurses. Members of the Student Council, under the direction of their advisor. Mrs. Ferraro per- formed a variety of functions, ranging from tak- ing vital information, explaining procedures, clerical duties, escorting donors, and running the snack canteen. The students in the Allied Health program got up close to the action, as assistants to the nurses who were taking blood. They also took the temperatures of prospective donors, and later helped the woozy blood-givers off the tables and to the food canteen. Miss Mahaney oversaw their efforts. In all, over Fifty pints of blood were collected by the Red Cross during their visit. Students and teachers alike donated. Some did it be- cause they knew the value of their blood to others in need. Others contributed for the experience of giving blood. Many, though, did it for one reason only; the snack canteen that awaited each donor at the end of their ordeal. Cookies, doughnuts, and juice were unlimited, handed out in order to help do- nors regain their lost strength. For the third season running the Wilby High Boys Basket- ball Team provided for their fans with thrills, excitement, and great play from start to fin- ish. Under the guidance and leadership of veteran coach Reggie O'Brien, and utilizing the outstanding skills of all- time standout senior Phil Lott, the Wildcats posted an out- standing 21-3 mark, earned a top state tournament berth, and challenged for the city and league crowns to the very last game. For the most part, this season revolved around Mr. Lott, the city of Waterbury’s all-time re- cord-setting player. While serv- ing as the backbone tor tne team Phil set city and Nauga- tuck Valley League career scor- ing records and earned first team spots on the All-City and All-N.V L. teams for the third straight year. He was also cho- sen first team All-State for the second consecutive year. He | averaged over thirty points per game, scoring from the outside, in close, everywhere. Phil also set a Valley record by scoring sixty-one points versus Kenne- dy in his best one-game effort. He was very highly sought after by many top colleges after the season, and he had the luxury of making the University of Ha- waii his college of choice. The Wildcats got contributions from many sources this season. Here junior guard Tighe Moran deftly finds the open man. Phil’s abilityr to go up over his oppo- nents and hit from anywhere on the court contributed to making him the greatest scorer in N.V.L. history. Boys Basketball 47 Wilby work-horse Keith Lou gets full extension as he lays in two in the victory over Holy Cross. Its clear the decks”, because Phill won t be denied on this drive to the glass. Out-jumping his man by a mile, ju- nior guard Keith Jordan launches a two-pointer. The 1988 Wildcats were a loose and relaxed group, as evidenced here, even in the face of adversity. By battling his opponents for this ball, senior Tracy Douglas gives proof of his contributions to the club. 48 Boys Basketball 'Cats Claw To Heights Again Much of Wilby's success next year will depend on the continued dominating performances of Keith Lou. 'Continued From Pg 46) But a great team needs more than one solid player and this Wilby team had just that. Sup- porting and augmenting Phil were players like hts cousin. Keith Lott. Keith worked the front court and averaged almost fourteen points a game, and crashed the boards to the tune of fourteen rebounds per. The Wildcats also received excellent back court play from Brandon Sumler. Keith Jordan. Tighe Moran, and Ant Banks. Obee Byrd. Tray Douglas, and Dwayne Ellis did a super job of scoring and rebounding in- side. The highlights of the season were plentiful earning the twen- ty-one victories, the boys got a big thrill out of beating arch- rival Crosby twice and was the only team to beat eventual N V.L. champ Holy Cross. The Withy Soccer Team, a program still in its infancy, had a few setbacks this season as it continues to try to really get off the ground. Coach Clemente Perrotta had to battle a numbers crunch this year, which cut into the teams ability to completed in the tough Naugatuck Valley League. Credit must be given though, to those players who kept Wildcat Soccer going. Their effort in pa- tience and in the games was to be commended, and with a few more players, well . . . who knows what would have happened. The squad did feature top notch |unior Marc Nelson, a three year stater. Marc's skills really helped the team out a lot! noted coach Per- rotta. Also of note was the play of Senior co-captain Mike Affhauser and junior Kasheed Jalaludin. Overall, Wilbv's few play- ers showed potential, and with a little bigger turnout there is a little doubt that the team can rise to the top. Although they won only two of nine games, there were many moments when they soared. The season started off right with an outstanding victory in the city Jamboree, and ended on a positive note as they were named the winner of the Watcrbury public school title, by virtue of their defeats of Crosby and Kennedy. Behind those victories were their new coach, Mr. Dom Gamhino. He gave encourage- ment and a sense of pride to the boys, and kept their spirits alive. Coach Gambino had a few standout players to call on also. They included junior Rodney Tail (right) who gained 1600 yards and a berth on the All- City team, along with other All - City selections; linebacker Will Gaskin, safety Gary Yates, kicker Mark DeSanto f all seniors), and junior defensive end Tony Diaz. Also, quarter- back Phil Halmers was once chosen regional player of the week, (and fullback Bill Petty scored four touchdowns against Crosby). Senior guard Mark Russo also played well. They decided to relax, take things as they came, including a few lumps, and to learn and gain experience as the season went on. And. wouldn’t you know it, that is just what did happen. After undergoing some rough moments, by seasons end Coach Letsky’s young ladies were maturing into solid ball- players. More than a few of the players caught the eye of oppo- sition coaches and earned post- season honors. Foremost among them was sophomore Brand ie Dcschaine who earned All-City kudos as a util- ity player and received honor- able mention for the All-N.V.L. team. The young men also finished with a seven win. three loss city record, sec- ond best in Water bury. The team had a good mix of veteran and younger ballplayers. One player who really reached his potential was junior short- stop Dom Ciarlo, who posted a stellar .405 batting average. The top senior stickouts were second baseman Joe Russo, slick third sacker Mark De- Santo, and Ed Garcia, a 300 hitting outfielder with a good glove. The young players Coach Tirado is banking on next year start with sophomore pitchers Jose Barros and Steve Uliano, who won nine games between them, and Pedro Quintana. The 'Cats seem well stocked with g x d arms for awhile. The only disappointment was just missing out on a state tour- nament berth, which would have been Wilby's first in many a season. The good news was the return to the team of senior Mike Romanicllo, an out- standing contributor to the squad as a sophomore two years ago, who decided not to come out for the team last year. He joined with fel- low senior Phil Halmers to give the 'Gits a solid one-rwo punch that could hold their own against most of their opponents' best golfers. The bad news occured when Coach Sidella lost the services of promising freshman Todd Stanton to a broken hand. Todd had com- pleted the foursome that league rules said was mandatory in order to score in a match. That meant the scores of the remaining matches could not be counted toward a won-loss record, a bitter pill for the coach and his players to swallow. Nonetheless, Phil, Mike, and freshman James Huggard did continue to practice and enter matches regularly, and did continue to play some good golf. Phil, espe- cially, came into his own this sea- son. always scoring well, and aver- aging a nice total of forty-four strokes for nine holes. The whole team did well considering their lack of players. Golfers Teed Off This season the Wilby Track Team competed with confidence and spirit. Under the guidance of ubiq- uitous coach Reggie O'Brien, leading his third team this school year, the boys showed talent and im- provement all season long. They finished with a 6 win, 5 loss record, beating some excellent teams along the way. Coach O'Brien could point to the outstanding contribution of several play- ers. Of special note were seniors Byron Trent, Gary Yates and Ron Bellamy, who excelled in sprinting and jumping events, and keyed relay teams that quali- fied for the State Meet. Ju- nior middle-distance and distance runner Tighe Moran also stcx)d out by winning four events in a meet on two different occa- sions this season. Track 71 Swim Team Gets Back In The Water This season Wilby’s Swim Team was revived after a year- long hiatus by a new, energetic coach, Mr. J.R. Birtwell. Coach Birtwell successfully whipped up a new enthusiasm for the team, got a core of young hard workers, and laid the groundwork for a complete renaissance ot the Wildcat swim program. Although they failed to win a meet this season, the team had more than a few highlights. Just getting into the water again was first and foremost. Also the emergence of several standouts, including some strong female members, was noteworthy. Wilby was the N.V.L.’s only co-ed team and Coach Birtwell was impressed enough with his young ladies to be optimistic about having separate boys and girls squads next year. Wilby’s top overall swim standout was freshman Ian Moran. He set freshman records in the 200 medley and 100 fly and placed in every meet despite swimming against the best every opponent had to offer. All things considered, Wilby High was happy and proud about having a swim season, and continued improvement, with Moran and the girls team under Mr. Birtwell’s guidance, seems inevitable for them. As usual they could be found on the side- lines on crisp autumn after- noons cheering for the foot- ball players to do their best and in the gym on cold win- ter nights, encouraging the crowd to get behind the basketball players as they made their way toward an- other victory. And as always, they could be counted on to get the whole school going during pep rallies and other activities. The Long-Awaited Prom Finally Chitter-chatter in the classroom, hall- ways and cafeteria about who's taking who, who's wearing what and where ev- eryone is going after the Prom sparked the beginning of the plans for the Senior Prom. The executive committee, headed by Mrs. Tuttle and Mr. Serafine, held several fund raisers, such as the sale of Class of '88 sweat shirts and coffee and glass mugs to defray the cost of our prom. Next, they met on several occa- sions to vote on prom favors, selections for the theme song, and the voting of the Prom king and queen. The vote for our theme song went to student body, and Make it Last Forever won hands down. With the arrangements finalized. May 27, 1988 was here at last, a glorious day that we had all looked forward to for four years. The words of the theme song reflected heart felt feelings about the past and the future. We must have surely known what other days would come in other flaming autumns flame. And even though we walk through different ways, to different hills, that remains the same. Watch every splendor, envy all the sky, but recognize the days we knew, and hear the simple sounds we heard. As the birds fly southward to warmth, we shall come back one year. Gloria Marryact Here Are A Few Of The Faces From Prom '88 96 Senior Prom The evening of June 21, 1988 was clear, warm, and wonderful. It was Com- mencement Night at Wilby High, and Wilby's newest graduates, their families, and friends could not have asked for a better evening. This was the moment that these sen- iors had worked all these years toward, a moment when they took another impor- tant step toward adulthood, an evening they would always remember. The seniors gathered in the cafeteria to don their caps and gowns and make any last-minute adjustments. The time was also taken to meet with friends, exchange hugs and congratulations, and make plans for post-graduation celebrations. Then they took their assigned places in the processional line, double checked it, and began the long wait for the proces- sion to begin. Helping each other out, Lori Gosselin and Lisa Hurbon pin on their corsages. Representing the end of the line, processional - wise, are Wright, Willette, West, Ward, Yates, Tyler, and Williams. ceremonies, donning caps and gowns. After a long wait, rheir lines made the march across the breezeway and into the 96 Graduation The graduates-to-be find themselves in various states of attentiveness as the speech - making goes on Mr. Sera fine works the pre • processional line in order to put some pensive seniors at ease with his humor. Wilby alumni candidates Dana Coretto, Dawn Cherry, George Caufield, Dalip Cazimovski, and Jayson Carrion hang out in the halls of Wilby one last time. Class of 1988 valedictorian Paul Fruin made all the appropriate remarks to his classmates during his turn on Graduation 99 The graduates prepare to receive their diplomas as their names arc called one-by-one. Bill Adanosky receives his sheepskin from May- or Santopietro and becomes his Class's first gra- duate. All smiles as they wait for their names to be called are Julio Garcia and Ed Garcia. Receiving a well-deserved hug and congratula- tions, Andre Dickens looks relieved after the cere- mony’s conclusion. 100 Graduation Class Of 1988 Becomes A Part Of Wilby Lore Sharing a laugh after commencement are Phil Halmers and his father. Its movie time for the Jamieson's as Grandmother records this moment. As they received their diplomas many graduates realized that, both happily and sadly, this part of their life was over. Finally the march up the covered ramp, through the main hallway, and across the breezeway began. Slowly and nervously, the class entered the auditorium and moved down the center aisles past family and friends, and then onto the stage. As the commencement ceremony began the assembly was treated to words of encour- agement by several speakers, including valedictorian Paul Fruin, salutatorian and class president Dean Schuster and class vice-president Candace Eggleston. Soon the biggest moment of the night was about to begin, the actual awarding of the diplomas. One-by-one, seniors turned into graduates as they were awarded their sheepskins. And, thus, at that precise moment their names passed into the illustrious history of Wilby High School. Kellie Ward. Mari Cardona, Candy Eggleston and Felicia Butler say good-bye to Wilby High. French Farewell, Miss Hutchinson! After forty-five rears in the service of the students of Water - bury. Wilby's guidance depart- ment head. Mary Hutchinson. has decided to begin a very well- deserved retirement. Miss Hutchinson grew up in Watcrbury, attending Columbia (now Kingsbury) School and Watcrbury Catholic High School. She left the area in order to begin her undergraduate studies at St. Elizabeth's in New Jersey, and later received a master's and sixth-year diploma from Colum- bia University. Her teaching career began upon her graduation from college in 1941. Miss Hutchinson's Waterbury tenure began a few years later at Crosby High, where she was a member of the social studies department. She trans- fered to Wilby in order to join the guidance department, and has served as the department head for the past ten years. Miss Hutchinson comes from a very strong teaching tradition. Her aunt. Rose Hutchinson, be- gan teaching English at Wilby in 1922. Two cousins. Mary and Gertrude Hutchinson, were long- time members of the school's business department. Evidently, education is in Miss Hutchinson's blood. That must make it even more difficult to leave a job that has been so such a pan of her life. She does plan to keep busy with involvement in community and civic affairs. That's Miss Mary Hutchinson, al- ways caring, always interested in the betterment of those around her. Jay Cooper Service Award recipient Mr. John McKenna, guest speaker Mr. Alan Demirs ( Wilby 65), and event coordinator Mrs. Mary Culhanc. On one evening during Homecoming Week the members of the Wilby Faculty and staff take time out to honor two people who have made Wilby High School proud. That night is called the Honors Convocation, and the sixth annual installment of that occasion was held this year. The honorees this year, as is the custom, were represen- tatives of both the retired fac- ulty and the school's alumni. Receiving the 1987 Distin- guished Service Award as an outstanding former faculty member was Mr. John Mc- Kenna, a retired teacher, guidance counselor, and coach who earned an excel- lent reputation during his ten- ure at the school. The 1987 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient was Mr. B. Jay Cooper, a member of the Class of 1968. Mr. Cooper went on to a successful jour- nalism career, working for lo- cal newspapers, and has since gone on to become deputy press secretary for President Ronald Reagan. The event was coordinated by Mrs. Mary Culhane. in conjunction with the mem- bers of the National Honor Society. Several distinguished guests were called upon to speak, including The Banking Center vice president Alan Demirs (Wilby ’65). Pre- senting Mr. McKenna's award was Miss Mary Hutchinson, guidance department head, and presenting Mr. Cooper's award was Mr. Louis Mazza- ferro, Wilby vice principal. Mrs. Culhane. Mrs. Shirley Norman, Dean Schuster, and Jodi Saltzman also made remarks. After a combined eighty-one years in Wilby's hallowed halls Mrs. Fran- ces Marcuse, Mr. Ned Fossbender, and Mr.John Spadaro have decided to take on new professional challenges as they transfer to Kennedy High School. Mrs. Marcuse has been a very hard working mem- ber of the Science depart- ment since 1966. ceaching earth science, environmen- tal science, and biology. She had the pleasure of watching two of her sons excel at Wilby, Harold, the salutatorian of the Class of 1974, and Andrew (1983). It's hard to believe that the ever-youthful Mr. Fossbender has been on the Wilby staff for twenty- three years, but it's true. Besides teaching social studies, he is responsible for starting the Wildcat tennis program, coached the swimming team, served as yearbook advisor and or photographer for many years, and was a class advi- sor in 1976. Last, but not least is Mr. Spadaro. The well respect- ed vice principal has been on that job for ten years. Prior to that he ran the school's music department for ten years and served as its marching band and concert band director. Mr. Spadaro also taught for six years in other Waterbury schools before coming to Wilby. The Class of 1988 is sor- ry to see these fine educa- tors go, but are happy in the thought that they were with them for their full four years. Mr. Robert Mohilio Concert Band.
