BEARZ NANCY L. BENNETT Class Officers faced Difficult, Lonely Challenge he graduating class of 1987 have had dedicated leaders to help them through their Senior year. And the Senior Class officers have been glad to do it. President Joe Scaglione remarked, I can say that the Class of '87 is a good class. We all get along well and have fun together. These hardworking students, Joe, Vice-President Tanya Kuhr, Secretary Amy Shirling, and Treasurer Margaret Mancini met at least once a week with Senior Class Advisor Mr. Ponzillo. Their objectives were to raise money to defray the costs of both the Senior Prom and the '87 Yearbook. They did this through a few fundraisers such as candy drives, a raffle, and other sales. Margaret remembered that ”We had a little trouble getting the Senior Class to participate, but Amy said, We were successful in what we did consider- ing the amount of help we had. Commenting on their successes, Tanya said, The fundraisers were held to a minimum, but we managed to pull through and achieve our goals. Congratulations and thanks to the Senior Class Officers for their efforts and acomplishments, from all their classmates. Kristine Dziezynski Seniors 5 School Activities: Art Club. History Club, golf. A few peo- ple who started the necessary fundrais- ing, who spurred the class to action ear- ly. The who has to be the Junior Class Officers of 1985-86. Tanya Kuhr was elected President of the Junior Class last year. Her hard work was partly evi- denced by the fact that she was elected again the next year as Vice-President of the Senior Class. Cozette Brown was Vice-President of the Junior Class, Tamika Jackson was Secretary, and Marga- ret Mancini was elected Treasurer in both her ju- nior and senior year. These junior class officers handled the task of planning money-raising to start the class fund. The class sold various items, such as things from Christmas catalogs, and held a bake sale. The officers also took part in the juniors' Ring Ceremo- ny of 1986. They organized and helped carry out the distribution of rings to their classmates. The money that the class raised with the guid- ance and aid of their advisor, Mr. Ponzillo, was carried over into their senior year and put mainly towards expenses of the Senior Prom. We really appreciate what Mr. Ponzillo and our Junior Class Officers did to help make the Class of '87 a suc- cess! Kristine Dziezynski 6 Seniors Chick Stop. Stacy! Margaret Mancini, and Mike Burkman are all called upon to deliver graduation speeches. Scholastic Standouts Are Part Of Wilby Heritage n any given day, it's not uncommon to pay tribute to the exploits of Wilby's stellar athletes. But very seldom do we take note of those who've achieved outstanding things in the area of learn- ing. So, it's fitting that we take a few paragraphs to take note of Wilby's top senior scholars. This year we had the unusual pleasure of hav- ing two students tie for the academic top spot; Margaret Mancini and Kristine Dziezynski. They both took a long list of honors and scholarships with them when they graduated this year, along with solid plans for their future studies. Marga- ret will attend UCOMN, majoring in psychology, and Kris will join her there, with an eye on a degree in business administration. Michael Burkman ranked next highest. A math and science whiz, Mike will attend Cornell University (how Ivy League!) in the fall, studying operational research and industrial engineer- ing. Two intelligent young ladies round out the top five positions of rank on the academic rolls. An- gela Soup Campbell served as president of the Honor Society, and will also attend UCOnrt, and major in computer science and engineering. And last, but not least, Liz D'Amato plans to become a well-schooled travel and tourism spe- cialist at the Associated Schools. With what they've been able to achieve so far, we re sure these outstanding scholars will do what it takes to reach their academic goals. DEXTER M. CLEMON LISA M. COLACROSSI Dec Word. You think these guys would use their time to study? Hah! George LeFebvre and Jim Valentino just wanna have fun dur- ing Senior Priviledge. Privileged Seniors Chat, Eat, Relax 0 alking by the Wilby cafeteria during the morning hours, you might see several students there, eating and so- cializing. But it's too early for lunch, you think. What are these kids doing? Skipping class? The answer is no — this is their class, it's called Senior Privilege, and is a unique kind of Study Hall. It originated at Wilby four years ago and each period is supervised by 1 or 2 teach- ers. Wilby is the only school that has such a program. This year, Mr. Dooley, Mrs. Bergantino, Mr. Ponzillo, Miss Yadarola, Mrs. Barber, and Mr. Minutillo were the overseers of the exclusive Senior Privilege classes. Their opinions: I think It's great, says Mr. Ponzillo. He likes the idea that the students can purchase breakfast foods, study, do homework, or just chat. Miss Yadarola also approves of the Senior Privilege program, as long as it isn't abused (by the students). What do the students have to say? you may wonder. Well, Michael Carrafa says that Senior Privilege is a time to relax, and sometimes sleep, Wendy Shanahan remarks, When I'm there, it's relaxing and comfortable. And every- one favors the glazed doughnuts! The popular opinion among teachers and stu- dents alike is that Senior Privilege is a favorable addition to Wilby's curriculum. This will be obvi- ous if you ever see a Senior Privilege class in session. Everyone will be having a good time, as the Seniors get a taste not only of doughnuts and muffins, but of the liberty they will have after graduation. DEMETRA D. Snow Days Are A Two-Sided Coin ou've been praying all night. Oh, God, please let it snow; please, please, please!'' You bound out of bed and turn on an AM station. During a BeeGees song, you move to the window to check out the snow situation. Great. You can still see your mom's car; it's not even half covered! But wait — Waterbury public and parochial schools, CLOSED. Yes! No school! Another five hours of uninterrupted sleep. You wake up around eleven o'clock and think about getting out of bed, but decide against it. If you show your face in the kitchen Dad'll send you out with a shovel and a warning to not come back until you've cleared the entire block! So you lay in bed until you hear someone else shoveling your sidewalk, then nap for another hour. When you finally come out of hibernation, you make lunch and start catching up on your soap operas or you get hooked on Wheel of Fortune You vegetate on the couch with a bag of chips until — Oh no. Mom has that familiar look in her eye — it's too late to hide. You know what that look means , it's small project time! Eek! She'll have you cleaning the hall closet or scrubbing the bath- room in no time. Well, so much for the workless day you had planned. Just a sample of the films Wilby students were able to choose from in 1986-87. Blockbuster Titles Highlight Movie Fare 0 ou could smell the popcorn and just about taste it. It seemed as if you had been standing in a line for daysjust wait- ing to see the front of it. Finally, here you are, about to buy a ticket for one of the hottest money-makers of 1986 and 1987. So sit back, re- lax, and enjoy. Top Gun, the block buster action movie of 1986, took a look at Tom Cruise at Maverick Mitchell, a daring young fighter pilot who's out to be the best of the best. Platoon, nominated for eight Academy Awards, was a realistic view of the Vietnam War, depicting the confusion, exhaustion, and horror exper- ienced by its soldiers. The ultra-scary Freddy Krueger was back in nightmare On Elm Street III: Dream Warriors. This third episode of the nightmare series showed us that even when you're asleep you're not safe from Freddy. Creeeepy! The crew of the Starship Enterprise find them- selves searching for humped-back whales in the year 1986 in order to save the future of the planet Earth in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Rodney no Respect Dangerfield got all the re- spect he needed in Back To School, in which he decides to go to college and hang out, show off, have fun, chase girls, and oh, yeah, study. Oh, by the way, just a little added fact. The flop of 1986-87 film year was the high-budget, no-profit film Howard The Duck, in which a hip, fast-talking duck from outer space laid an enormous egg. For some, it will make their day, and for others it may ruin their whole week. When some students were asked how they felt about report cards there were a variety of reactions. “I am anxious for the results, and after I receive them I plan my strategy for the next semester accordingly. said Margaret Mancini. ‘ I'm never worried about it. claimed Lisa D'A- vino, whose sentiments are echoed by Mike Carrafa's blase, “I don't care. Loveable Mick Craig had the nerve to claim, Report card day for me is exciting! I just can't wait to see which teachers gave me extra points for my good behaviod While report cards are an integral part of the school environment, we wondered if they were as important in the home. When asked if he always showed his report card at home Dexter Clemon exclaimed, “Yeah! KACZMAREK Modeling a few of the fashions that were popular at Wilby in '86-'87 are (clockwise from top) Ricky Vo, Kurt Sullivan, Brendan Kearney, Lilly Ferrer, Lisa D Avino and Maurice Robinson. Anything Goes! When Making A Fashion Statement ilby High s Class of '87 fashions or trends went from comfy sweats to dressy satins and ruffles, along with everything in between. Our female students had a varied wardrobe. On their more slummy days, they dressed in warm sweats (shirts and pants), stirrup pants, and long, heavy sweaters. This was the ready for bed , little girl look. On their better days, especially senior portrait day, the girls, or per- haps we should say ladies, looked stunning in their satin blouses with lace collars, silk dress- es, and skirts. Their casual, innocent side was shown with cotton blouses and skirts (with lace underslips) in the colors of khaki, peach, and antique white, and also the springy, pastel groups. The men of Wilby spiffied themselves up in heavy, graphic-design and shaker-knit sweaters, dress pants and suspenders, not to mention dress shirts and thin ties. The body-building trend came in with sweat pouring off and mus- cles mounding on our heavyweights. This brought on sweatshirts and pants, tank tops and headbands, name-brand sneakers, like Ree- boks, hikes. Filas, and Spot-Built became a must for any trendy casual outfit. We all have been known to take a day off to enjoy the weather. We never meant to get caught. Who would have thought the school would call home? The next day you get called down to the vice- principal's office. You get the usual speech and the dreaded form. The form you have to bear like a scarlet letter for the full day before your In-Mouse term. Every teacher that you hand this assignment sheet to says the same thing, What did you do to get ln-House7' You tell the tale of your demise as their mouths remain agape. Well, the day finally comes. You walk down to that hot windowless room right after the bell for first period rings. You take a seat and pray you do not die of boredom. Mr. Spadaro walks in and gives you the speech about responsibility and punishment. You receive a sheet to write a 200 word essay about why you got In-House. He leaves and the clock starts tick- ing. Minutes seem like hours. Hours seem like days and then you hear it, the bell. What? That's only the end of first period. Well this continues on for the rest of the day until that gorious 2:00 bell. At 1:59 you are posed and ready. The bell rings, you rush for the door. Ah, free at last. Andrea Morisette Students look over information provided by a College Fair participant College Fair 's A Hit With Students m ilby's annual College Fair was held on December 17th this year. Considering its original date was snowed out, the participation by colleges was more than satisfactory. Admission officers from twenty-seven post-sec- ondary schools and five armed services were able to make the December trip. They settled them- selves in the Wilby media center, ready to answer any questions and supply any information for inter- ested and prospective students. Guidance Coun- selor Lillian Brown says, The reason college ad- ministrators are called to the high school is to allow exposure and personal conversation for stu- dents who perhaps would not have the chance at other times. Students themselves found the whole event beneficial in most respects. The only complaints were that this fair did not measure up to last year's variety. It seemed at first, most students wandered around not knowing exactly what they wanted to see and do. They were very hesitant to approach the admission officers. But after awhile they tuned in to the fact that these people were there to guide them and began responding with enthusiasm. It's a great idea, was the comment of most seniors who find themselves in their last year scrambling to make the right decisions in choos- ing colleges and careers for themselves. Others found it absolutely rewarding. On the whole, the Wibly 1986 College Fair proved a successful experience for all. janine e. mckinney Plcen. Gina Pic-He Sounds like a personal problem to me! Caroline Niven thought she would never give blood again because of the black and blue marks the needle left on her arm. Many students were worried about contacting AIDS, but learned that you cannot contact it by giving blood. Craig Jones, for instance, felt, 1 should be able to store my blood in case I ever needed it again. The Class Of 1987 Class Will 35 SENIOR DAY On the morning of June 19 the members of the Senior Class of 1987 prepared for school in a very different way. Physically and psychologi- cally this day would be different. It was the last day of regular classes for this school year. It was the last day of regular classes forever for this graduating class. That made it a day of celebration and reflection. It was Senior DayI Members of the Class of 1987 gather around the flag pole pri- or to the beginning of the morn- ing flag-raising ceremony. First, seniors would get to break in their newly received graduation gowns, an unmistakable indicator of their exalted rank amongst the student body. Secondly, their wardrobe beneath their gowns could today consist of short-shorts. JAMS, cut-offs, muscle shirts, etc., previously forbidden attire. Wilby Boys Sky To State Semi-Final Game As we know, Wilby's is one of Waterbury's best Boys Basketball teams. The Wilby boys have been coached by Reg- gie O'Brien for two years and in those two years the basketball team has improved greatly. In the '85-86 season the team won the MVL. In the '86-87 year the boys lost to Crosby in the NVL title game but played a bril- liant game. The final score was 86-87. The varsity starters for the 86-87 year were Kevin Eason (senior and co- captain), Phil Lott (ju- nior co-captain), sen- iors Melvin Burrus, Robert Manning, and sophomore Keith Lott. Senior Marcus Single- ton was the team's sixth man. The boys ended their season with a 21-3 re- cord overall. This earned them a spot in the state championship tournament where they played their first games against Immaculate and then Saint Thomas Aquianas. Those victo- ries enabled them to qualify for the state semi-final game against always tough, number one-ranked, Scinl Josephs ol Trum- bull. There they lost and were knocked out of the competition. That was just about the only disappointment for the team all season, (con- tinued ..) During this year Kevin and Phil both scored their 1000th career points. Phil earned a coveted spot on the All- State first team along with the All-City and All- Valley teams. Kevin also made the All-City and All-MVL first teams. Me earned another top honor when he was awarded the Billy Finn Award, as the most out- standing senior player in Waterbury. Two other members of the team that should be mentioned for their ef- forts are two dedicated seniors, Mel Burrus and Rob Manning, who proved to be two of the best back-court players in the P1VL. Wilby's outlook for the next year is good. Coach O'Brien points out that while six of his top eight players gra- duate, he is glad to say he will still have Phil re- turning along with Phil's cousin Keith Lott, who was an outstanding sophomore foward. Some of the freshmen and junior varsity play- ers with much potential for the years to come are Simon Manning, Cazzie Iverson, Michael Banks, Brandon Sumler, Glyn Wallace, Dom Ciarlo, Tracy Douglas, and Roland Johnson. With Phil and Keith, along with some of the javee and freshmen players, we expect to be a good team again next year!” Shelby James The senior members of this outstanding team were Mel Burrus, Marcus Singleton. Kevin Eason. Angel Ortiz, Rob Manning, and Tim Gainey. The Loneliness Of Two Long Distance Runners The 1986 Cross- Country season was one filled with many set- backs. T thought we would have a good year since we were returning nine members from last year's jayvee team, and two varsity runners, but injuries and jobs left me with only four runners,” lamented Coach Dave Guerrera. And that was when the season be- gan. Things got worse as it progressed, and Mr. G. was more often than not left with only two runners at the meets, which meant Wilby could not com- pete for team victories. Because of this, Wilby could not compile a team won-lost record. On a brighter note, the two runners Mr. G. was left with were very good runners indeed, his returning standout was senior Alfred Mo- rales, a veteran harrier who earned spots on the All-City and All-MVL squads and placed eighteenth in the Class L State Championships. The team's other con- sistent performer was sophomore Mike Munoz, running varsity cross-country for the first time and did very well. From time to time Coach Guerrera could also count on Dianilda Rodriguez, who did well enough to make the All- n.V.L. girls team. Unsung Hero With only two full-time members on this season's cross-country team it wasn't too difficult for Coach Dave Guerrera to pick an Unsung Hero. He is Mike Munoz. Mike, a soph- omore, was running varsi- ty cross country for the first time this season and according to Coach G., “He did an outstanding job! Mike had to overcome some disconcerting confu- sion in order to run this season when he had to switch back and forth from Wilby to Crosby and then back to Wilby (and ulti- mately, back to Crosby again). Confused? So was Ml I®, he. So in light of all he went through you've got to know he deserves this award. Goals Missed During Second Season As the second season of the Wilby Soccer pro- gram dawned in the fall, hopes were high for im- proved fortunes. But it didn't take long for it to become obvious that wasn't going to be the case: loss began to pile upon loss, and it was soon time to wonder why. It became evident that the loss of many key players took a heavy toll on the team. The boys were able to experience the thrill of victory this season, though, after their lone win over Crosby. They also were able to allow younger players to get the valuable playing time they would need in order to improve in seasons to come. A few youngsters that coach Clemente Perrotta looks forward to helping out more next year are Aire Duarte, James Wetmore, and Mike Affhauser, who played in the crucial goal tender position. The team was able to boast of two standout players, also. Captains Adlai Joseph, a senior, and Marc Nelson, sopho- more, could always be counted on to try to rally their troops in the face of all the odds. Unsung Hero The soccer team's Unsung Hero this season was fresh- man James Wetmore. When James first strolled onto the practice field to try out this season, few of the veteran players thought the diminutive frosh had much of a chance to succeed. They soon were proved wrong when they got a load of Jim's speed, ball-han- dling skills, and determination. Before long he had earned the nickname Speedy, and was making surprising contribu- tions to the team's efforts. Al- though he was not able to fin- ish the season with the squad. Is Grid Battle Cry The Football Team, coached by Raymond Shortt, has come off a disappointing season statistically, however, there were many high points, and reason to hope for the future. The record of the two wins against nine loses is not an indicator of the in- tensity and competitive nature of this young team. Joe Scaglione, co- captain with Jim Valen- tino who won the Mem- bruno Award as the out- standing senior player in the city, was an All- City selection, as were Rob Barnham and Mark Parisi. Other outstand- ing members of the team were Tim Gainey who transferred to Wilby from North Caro- lina, Gary Yates, Dalip Cazmovski, and Rod- ney Tait. The overall outlook for the football team is very good. In 1986 there were 31 players on the team who will supposedly return. This past year also saw the most freshmen ever on the team. In coming years, it appears that greater success is very possible. Dean Schuster Unsung Hero This year Coach Shortt made what at first glance may seem to be an un- usual selection for the team's Unsung Hero . But on closer inspection his choice, team man- ager Rich Marquis, epito- mizes what being an un- sung hero is all about. ' Mel , as he is affec- tionately called, has been a diehard member of the staff for four years. Me has the noteworthy distinction of not having missed a game or prac- tice during that time. Coach Shortt exclaims. Mel has 100% dedica- tion to the squad. Rich did much more than just pass out towels and keep the water buck- et filled. Me was a source of spirit, support, and good cheer to all the players throughout his four years. Thanks. Mel! % 1' f f Yeess!! Wilby Does Have A Girls Hoop Team It is usually asked “Does Wilby have a Girls' Basketball team? The answer to that question is yes, Wilby does have a girls' basketball team and “they are an excellent group of girls, accord- ing to coach Mark Pou- lin and asst, coach Dave Guerrera. Their first three games were easy wins but they knew that they would have to practice harder for the fourth game against Holy Cross. The five starters were Jill Ci- priano (Sr.), Barbara Love (Jr.), Pamela Har- ris (Jr.), (all three tri- captains), Jody Saltz- man (Jr.), and Valerie Pearce (Jr.) transfer stu- dent, also a first year starter), and the sixth man Keisha Moore. They didn't do as well as they could have and lost, but they still played a good game. The varsity team lost only 6 games; twice against Torrington, twice against Ansonia, and twice against Holy Cross. One goal not reached was to win the nVL Championship, but the team put in a fine effort by playing to the best of their ability, and stayed in the running for the crown. (continued ...) Unsung Hero It may seem that a coach would have little trouble finding an Unsung Hero’’ on the girls basketball team. For, despite having two out- standing seasons, the girls' team still labors in relative anonymity. They continue to be overshadowed by their ri- vals for the school s atten- tion, the boys' team. But select one unsung hero coach Mark Poulin did. Mis choice is Pam Harris. Pam, a junior, served as a tri-captain for this year's squad, she is not known for scoring tons of points so she doesn't often make the headlines but, She is an in- spirational role player'' comments coach Poulin, as well as the best defen- sive player on the team.' The junior was Heather Adler the team's top performer and number one seed. heather also proved to be the league's top per- former when she took first place in the singles competition at the NVL tournament. She was only defeated once in singles match play all season. Of course, top high- lights of the season had to start with the excel- lent effort the team's members put forth in the tournament, but Coach Killer also fondly remembers getting re- venge against a tough Crosby squad by the score of 6-3 after being handled by the Bull- dogs 0-9 in an earlier encounter. Unsung Hero This year Coach Killer could always count on one player to fill the bill wher- ever needed. She was al- ways there, dependable. ’ lie proudly said of Unsung Hero Tanya Kuhr. Tanya has been with the team since her freshman year and has blossomed into a steady, reliable performer. Although not a number one seed at either position she could be counted on to play singles or doubles, as needed. And although she didn t win them all. her coach says she never got down for losing.” Tan- ya served as a fine exam- ple all career long as a team player, and a leader. Giris V Tennis) Youth Served As Tennis Fortunes Rise Well folks, tennis did seem to be the sport at Wilby this spring, as the Boys' Tennis team joined the ladies in fielding a well-rounded, improved team. Coach Lee Kleinschmidt's charges took six match- es this season, a big im- provement over last year, and was competi- tive every time out. Be- cause of all the young and first year players I had, I was happy with our six wins, Coach Klein said later. He had a few especial- ly good performers this season to rely on. That group was lead by the senior doubles duo of co-captains George Snyder and Sean Moran. George and Sean compiled an out- standing 10 and 4 re- cord and earned berths of the All-HVL team. The coach was also pleasantly surprised by the rapid improvement of sophomore Marcel Micolasora, who won his last four matches easily. Klein' could also depend on excellent ef- forts from sophomores Dom Derasmo, Curtis Murray, Larry Breen, and Jeff Pappas, and also from senior new- comers Kurt Sullivan and Edens Descene. Highlights were many this season for the boys' tennis team, and the future continues to look bright, what with graduation claiming mainly George and Sean and the fine crop of underclassmen re- turning. Unsung Hero The Boy's Tennis team could claim many candi- dates for this year's Un- sung Hero designation. Coach Kleinschmidt had a large group of workhorse youngsters who toiled without fanfare. But out of that group he was espe- cially proud of the contri- butions of sophomore Curtis Murray. Curtis made most every practice and always tried his best. ' exclaimed his coach. Murray moved his way up the rankings to the fourth seed position, and in that spot he often found hismelf up against players who were more exper- ienced. Young Curtis didn't let this deter him, but instead he learned and improved from the exper- ience. Mo wonder Coach Klein expects an even stronger contribution from him in future seasons. Young Team Tested By Tough NVL Schedule Second year coach George Tirado had more than enough reasons to feel some- what snake-bitten this season. It wasn't bad enough that the team only logged one victo- ry, (but many of) the losses where very close and could have gone either way was especially bother- some to him. The team did make sure that it enjoyed its lone victory a 5-3 win over Kaynor Tech. And it could claim some stickout ball players. The foremost of these were Wilby's top bat- terymates, pitcher Rich Herbert and catcher Kirk Farrow. Both earned mention in the AII-nVL team balloting. Coach Tir- ado also made note of the play of two juniors; third baseman Joe Russo and outfielder Gisbel Pagan. He was especially surprised and delight- ed by the emergence of freshman Steve Uliano who contribut- ed on the mound, in the field and with the lumber. So the 1987 season was by no means a lost cause. If he can keep the young team together. Coach Tir- ado is certain that the future looks good!'' — Unsung Hero Although he was the team co-captain and its top player. Coach Tirado is convinced that senior Rich Herbert is the squad’s Un- sung Hero. You see he s looking at a bigger picture, the Nau- gatuck Valley League. At season s start Tirado had big plans for Rich s earn- ing a spot on both the All- City and All-NVL teams. Due to the team s losing record, though, voters stopped paying attention to Rich's efforts, although they were usually signifi- cant. Despite the team’s re- cord, Rich gave an All-Val- ley performance which went unnoticed by much of NVL. The 1987 Softball Team members: front row (I. to r.): Brandy Deschaine. Kim Mar- shall. Outstanding Seniors Form Heart Of Softball Season Although the Softball Team didn't live up to Coach Rudy Graziano's expectations of being more competitive in the tough riaugatucK Valley League, several good things came out of the 1987 season. Coach Graz did have several good players in this line-up, but things like errors and bad breaks combined to limit the team to only two victories. The stan- douts were lead by sen- ior co-captains Amy Shirling, who combined a .356 average with good pitching, and Mi- chelle Tardiff, who hit .390 and scored 27 runs. Fellow seniors Sandy Savage, Jennifer Gass, and Ann Reilly made up the core of the rest of the line-up. The season did have some individual high- lights for Coach Gra- ziano. Ann's one hit, nine strikeout pitching performance in beating Raynor and Jenn Gass' single, double, and tri- ple, for five RBI's in an- other Raynor victory are two top highlights. , he reminisced. Me also pegged Michelle's two- run homer versus Tor- rington, Sandy's great defense in one of the Naugatuck games, and Amy's no-walk pitching performance against Sacred Heart as mo- ments to remember. So it looks like this year's crop of seniors all had their moments in the sun this season, which is a testimony to their determination in the face of adversity. Lyle whose handicap has averaged around 12 during his high school career, of- ten played in the top seed for Coach Sidella. Billy, whose average handicap has been around 15, also pro- vided dependable work during all of his match- es. The newcomer, rela- tively speaking, was Philip Halmers, who played from time to time last year, but turned into a regular competitor this season. He worked his handicap down to 10 and became the best golfer on the squad by season's end. He plans to return to the team next year. By season's end he was basically left with a small handful of performers and ended with an 0-10 mark. Despite the record, Wilby did have a few of its usual outstanding trackmen. Number one on the list was ju- nior Byron Trent. By- ron stood out in the jumping events, espe- cially the Triple jump where he was unde- feated in dual compe- tition and was selected to the All-NVL and All- City squads. He went on to place second in the Class L Champion- ship meet and fourth in the state open where he set a school record of 13.39 meter. Coach Wise also made note of the fine contri- butions of sophomore sprinter Rodney Tait who excelled in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The track team hopes to rebuild around these and oth- er youngsters next year, and they have a hopeful outlook for fu- ture seasons. There was not one cloud in the sky on that May twenty- ninth evening when anticipa- tion and excitement came plenty in hand. The Wilby High School Sen- ior Prom of 1987 began like any other prom would. Cou- ples patiently posed on door- steps and beside the front yard bushes, subjected to camera flashes of more than a dozen relatives and neighbors who just happened to glance out their windows at the right moment. Gentlemen arrived with full bouquets of roses and baby's breath for the la- dies and carried them off into their limos, rented cars, or regular old heaps. Or, as in quite a few cases, the ladies picked up the gentlemen. Wilby friends snapped other Wilby friends high and low and near and far all over the beau- tiful Aqua Turf countryside. The actual prom events com- menced at 7:30 that night so couples were allowed before- hand to wander over the out- skirts, checking out what types of couples each arrived in. Cocktails and fruit cock- tails were served on attractive- ly set tables. Senior class advi- sor, Mr. Ponzillo, visited each table to make sure guys and gals were throughly enjoying themselves. The meal consist- ed of prime rib or jumbo shrimp which turned out to be extremely filling. Everyone worked it off later on the dance floor. Sophisticated ladies and giddy girls showed off their la- cey hair decorations, their ele- gant pearls and rhinestones, their fancy legwear and their bouffed hairdos. Their dress- es were either hand-made, or- dered, or bought in the best boutiques. Suave gentlemen and charming boys looked neatly trimmed next to their fluffy, frilly, elaborate part- ners. Their tuxedos were slim and attractive. After the air on the dance floor began to get sticky, however, they threw off their stuffy jackets. According- ly, the ladies got rid of their heels. It was a time of conflicting emotions, with joy. anticipation, and relief being foremost in our minds. But only a few layers below in our collective con- sciousness was a feeling of great sad- ness in knowing that we'd probably never again see so many of these peo- ple who ve meant so much to us for the past four years. We gathered in the cafeteria prior to the start of the ceremonies, donning our caps and gowns and double- checking our positions in the proces- sional. After what seemed like an in- terminable wait, we began to make the long march across the ramp through the main building and down the breezeway toward the auditorium. The strains of Pomp and Circum- stance'' could be heard as we neared the auditorium entrance. We then made our way down the aisles to the stage, our nervous, controlled ca- dence a marked contrast to the spec- tators' frantic craning and stretching in an effort to catch glimpses of their loved ones. Once we had our seats up on the stage we were able to survey the multitudes who had turned out just to honor us. Wendy Shanahan did an outstanding job with the national anthem, and then the speeches began. The Rev. Francis Manudel gave the invocation, fol- lowed by Michael Burkman’s saluta- tory remarks. Then the co-valedictori- ans (an oddity, there), Kristine Dzie- zynski and Margaret Mancini ad- dressed the crowd and their class- mates. Mr. Leonardi took the podium at that time and introduced our guest speakers; Mayor Joseph Santopietre. Superintendent Joseph Robitaille, Board of Education President Law- rence Zollo (Lyle's father), and Wilby booster James Valentino (Jim s fa- ther), who all gave us words of con- gratulations, advice, and encourage- ment. Finally the moment we'd all been waiting for arrived; the awarding of the diplomas. One by one our names were called off, along with some of our more noteworthy accomplish- ments. As we made our way to receive the sheepskins, a flood of memories came back to us about our years at Wilby. Convocation Proves To Be A Special Event During the fall the faculty of Wilby High worked in conjunction with the Honor Society to hold Wilby's fourth annual Convocation ceremonies. The purpose of this event is for the faculty to take time out to honor former members of the Wibly family, usually on outstanding alumus and a dis- tinguished retired teacher. This year the ceremony, coordinated by Mrs. Culhane, was especially beautiful and poignant. Chosen for honors were Miss Helen Mealy, long time head of the math department, and Shellie Ferguson, a member of Wilby's Class of 1961 and now a successful business man. The Convocation was attended by faculty mem- bers, national Honor Society members, as well as family and friends of the honorees. It was opened by speeches from Mr. Leonardi. Mayor Santopie- tro. Superintendent Robitaille. But the best mo- ments were provided by Miss Healy and Mr. Fergu- son. Miss Healy recalled the influences on her life by her teachers and her fellow faculty members. In her self-demeaning way she quipped that, ”1 got this award only because I outlived my colleagues.'' Mr. ferguson's acceptance speech was especial- ly emotional. He remembered the effect that his teachers had on his success. He also related his fathers humorous and helpful advice to him about getting ahead. Shellie. a former Wildcat basketball star who showed up on crutches due to a pickup hoop game injury, let his emotions flow as he con- cluded his speech with a heartfelt round of thanks to those, both past and present, who helped make his big night possible. This year is no different as we bid fare- well to Mr. Leo Beland. a fifteen year veteran of our Industrial Arts Department. Hr. Beland, a Waterbury native, attended Leavenworth High and joined the Army after graduation. He saw action in Europe during World War II, including being in the thick of the action at the legendary Battle of the Bulge. He earned the rank of sergeant as a communica- tions instructor. After the service Mr. Beland began his first career as a toolmaker. Later he learned the skills of an electronics technician from RCA. He also worked as a developmental engineer for General Motors before becoming a teacher. While teaching in the metal shop he continued to work as a toolmaker for Concentric Tools. Mr. Beland has worked very hard during his fifteen years in the classroom, and he deserves a relaxing retirement. While he is waiting a cou- ple of years for his wife Lorrainne to retire he will continue to work for Concentric Tools. It seeks suggestions and input from the students which are considered for the better- ment of Wilby high School. Officers for the 1986-87 school year were elected by a vote of the student body. The officers were Tammie Jones (President), Gary Yates (Vice-Presi- dent), Tawana Graham (Treasurer), and Terri Pri- vott (Secretary). Ms. Peggy Reynolds is the Student Council advisor. As usual the Council did many things this year to promote civic awareness and pride. Included were Drinking and Driving Awareness Week, where stu- dents could show support for this cause by wear- ing a red ribbon, serving as volunteers for the May 16, Special Olympics, and holding a successful Bloodmobile, in which fifty-six pints of blood were donated by members of the student body. The Wilby Afro-American Club has a long tradition of provided en- riched social and cultural activities to all members of the student body from the Afro-American point of view. In order to do this the club stages many events. One of the most popular was a Soul rood Dinner with samples of ethnic cuisine. They also sponsored a trip to the United Negro College Fair and provided awards to deserving seniors. Mrs. Lillie Mead and Mrs. Cheryl Savage again served the club as faculty advisors. This year's officers were Curtis Clemons (President). Cozcttc Brown (Vice-President), Toi Johnson (Treasurer) and Tamara Piland (Secretary). This year the club was led by its officers: Rich McDonald (President), Janine McKinney (Vice-President), and Carol Griffin (Secretary). The DECA group again ran the student store and held several other fund-raisers, including the sale of Christmas items, boxed candy, and Easter candy. With their funds they were able to pay dues to the state and national organizations, attend business meetings, pay for trips to confer- ences. including accomodations, and hold a successful Employer Appre- ciation Banquet. 122 Class Sophomores LEWIS. The Wilby newspaper is, appropriately enough, called The Wildcat. It strives to serve the dual purposes of promoting better writing skills in the field of journalism and to inform the student body and staff about what's happening in the school. The students who work on the staff are for the most part members of the Talented and Gifted program. Their efforts were coordinated by Editor Kristine Dziezynski and Assistant Editor Sarah Scully. Their faculty advisor was Mrs. Marilyn Gerace. The newspaper does not seek to make a profit, just stay in ink. The paper was sold for fifteen cents a copy (a bargain at twice the price) and the funds were used to send a message of congratulations to the Class of 1987 through an ad in this yearbook.____________________________________________________ Classes 125 Freshmen 126 Classcs ARKOYO.
