A Waterbury native, Mrs. Price studied at Sacred Heart Hi h School, The Colle e of New Rochelle, and Fordham University. She Tias had the distinc- tion of serving the young people of Waterbury for thirty-five years. She has been teaching English here at Wilby since 1953 and has been department head for the past fifteen years. Mrs. Price has taken advantage of her opportunities in that time to make a positive impression on the lives of the many students lucky enou h to be in her classes. All of those students, and Tier teaching colleagues, wish her many happy and satisfying retirement years. We will truely miss her. class advisor, Mrs. Michelle Tuttle. From the beginning of our junior year she has encouraged and motivated us and has worked above and beyond the call of duty to make our class a social and financial success. From time to time roblems would spring up, but with her Kelp they would disappear just as quickly. Persever- ance, determination, and understanding are just a few of the fine qualities that make Mrs, Tuttle such a valuable member of the Wilby staff. Having our yearbook dedicated to her is an honor she richly deserves, DEDICATIO J 4 5' 4 M 4 U, f 14!Acade IW, mics fy 'nie f 5 . Under the guidance of coach Reggie O'Brien and assistant coach jeff Hunter, the team managed to finish the season with a record of 3-6. The fact that the team was only able to win three games was due to lost practice time and a shortage of upperclassmen. The team defeated Sacred Heart and Watertown, and had an upset victory over highly-rated Ansonia, The team will have a bright future since 15 of its 17 members will return next year. This year Wilby had two All-Valley Honorable Mentions - Kevin Eason and Phil Lott. Phil managed to average 19.3 points per game and Kevin, who averaged 11.1 points per game proved to be a big asset tothe team. Whereas the school barely fielded a team ir 1984, Mr. Cornacchio worked hard to whip up enthusiasm anc recruit a squad that he could build on for the future. And that's just what he did. The lone golfer with team experience was junior Sean Moran, and he proved to be the cornerstone of the young quintet. The player who showed the most improvement over the course of the season was Lyle Zollo, a sophomore who will be depended on heavily in seasons to come. Bill McCarthy, a junior, also contri- buted as did youngsters Bill Wolff and Paul Fruin. Clubsfl 11 After 3 years, the class of 1985 finally became upperclassmen in the true sense when we received our class rings in March of 1984. We became the second class to receive our rings at a Ring Ceremony planned for us by our administration. As our names were called, we all felt a sense of pride and accomplishment as we walked on stage to be presented with our rings. We were congratulated by the admin- istration and our junior class officers. After the ceremony, we were welcomed into the cafeteria for refreshments prepared bythe kitchen staff. There, the class started the traditional turning of the rings. We all worked on this for the remainder of the day until we got the 85 turns needed to lock our rings. Our rings will always be trea- sured as a rememberance of our many memories at Wilby High School. RING CEREMO 112fActivitics 55 W A1240 J' an-KT' , 1 9 V224 an ff W , I N Q ' r but pm, ' 4 y f 5 if . As has been the case the past three years students once again vied for the honor of being selected to represent the school as Mister and Miss Senior, Mister and Miss Junior, or their attendants. As usual a fine group of students met the rigid criteria for consideration and submit- ted their qualifications to their peers to be voted upon. Chosen by that balloting to be Miss Wilby was Lisa Gordon with Daisy Quintana as her attendant. Frank Scalo was selected Mister Wilby and was attended by Rick Boulanger. Miss Senior was Monique johnson and her attendant was Maggie Pappas. Mr. Senior was Dewitt McCor- mick, attended by Lamont Butler. Mister and Miss Junior were Rob Zappone and Maria Poveromo, attended by john Hill and Lisa jones. This year underclassmen were represented, with the Class of 1987 honorees being jill Cipriano, joe Scaglione, Toi johnson, and Kim Marshall and the Class of 1988 selections being Cary Yates, Donna Cote, Pam Harris, and Mark Parisi. 114fActivities lr' I if Mi 1 , W' A......... 37' 4 X i :ii Activities!115 , v This year's Homecoming Parade brought many students, teachers, and administra- tors out to show true Wilby pride and spir- it. Most of our teams, organizations, and clubs were involved in this year's parade. There were many cars and floats, decorated in traditional green and white. The parade really showed Wilby's spirit as they rode through downtown Waterbury. As Wilby's section rode to the reviewing stand on the Green, we broke out the Wilby Cheer with the help of Mr. Leon- ardi. Though all the seniors involved had a great time and showed Wilby's enthusiasm, we could not help but remember that this would be our last Homecoming as students, and that next year we would attend as alum- ni of Wilby. We would like to thank all the teachers, especially Mrs. Head who coordinated the week's activities, and students involved who helped make this year's Homecoming one of the best Wilby has ever seen. After the parade, we returned to our home field to watch our team play its tradi- tional Homecoming game against our rival, Kennedy. Many students came out and cheered our team on to victory. We defeated Kennedy with a score of 26-8. He is the first born son of the emperor Charlemagne and even though this musical is set in 780 A.D. in the not-so-Holy Roman Empire, it evokes the feeling of a modern people and time as well. After attempts at being a cho- lar, a soldier, at frolicking , at being a revolutionary, and even at being Emperor, Pippin eventually finds his greatest fulfill- ment in settling down to an ordinary life, and probably lives happily ever after. Terry Ford was featured in the title role and received excellent supporting help from such cast members as Sue Cagne as Fastrada, his scheming step-mother, Lucy Daddona as his hip grandma, Berthe, and Steve Burke as his ambitious step brother. Recent alumnus Dennis Arroyo fClass of '84J helped out in a pinch and performed well as Charlamagne. And last but not least, there was the multi-talented Millie Nicolasora in the all-important role as the Leading Player. Millie's skills shone brightly throughout the play's entire run. Putting the show together was not easy, but it was great fun. With the faculty advi- sorship of Ms. Gay Yadarola, and the direc- tion of Mrs. joan Tortora they pulled it off beautifully. Everyone had so much fun and made so many friends that they will never forget the great times that Pippin gave them. PIPPI 120fActivitieS ibn- wr E as. S Activitiesflll SUPER SENIQR SUPPER A Super Senior is defined as any senior who throughout his or her years at Wilby High has never been refered to the office for disciplinary reasons. This year ninety-sev- en seniors and their parents joined together for the gala event, the third annual dinner of its kind in Wilby history. Again this year dinner was planned and prepared by Mr. Louis Mazzaferro, Mrs. Diane Santoro, and Mr. Milo Flannery and his food service classes. Teachers volun- teered their time and efforts as waiters, waitresses, cooks, and dishwashers in an attempt to show their appreciation for these students of exemplary behavior, After dinner, as a flaming cherry cheese cake jubilee and coffee was served, the guests relaxed and chatted with faculty members. The seniors who were invited to partici- pate had many kind words of thanks for the teachers, especially the event coordinators Mrs. Antoinette Barber and Miss Rossana Crudele. Everyone agreed that this was truely a super evening. 122fActivities 4 5 1 P a ou 1' ' qu 17' 1' Yvmfyg 4 V i , ig Wim ,lin ,M Q-Y? if WSF ps- ,M- Q-ur X. .' ww-N zwff-ww .S 5 gg, :-A 'S 'ff mm . he wx 1 n Activitiesf12.3 r 'W' , Q1 'r ...i .. 1 v On the evening of Saturday, May 18, all the stars in Wilby's galaxy shown brightly, as the young men and women of the Class of 1985 gathered for their Senior Prom. A veritable constellation of beautiful ladies in elegant designer gowns and their handsome escorts in color coordinated tuxedos gath- ered at the Aqua Turf in Southington to party the night away in celebration of their years at Wilby High. The dinner was excellent, as expected, and only a few were not too bloated after- wards to find room for dessert. Iveryone managed to work off the pounds, though, by rocking to the sounds of disc jockey Vinnie D'C I-Ie kept the dancers jamming until the wee hours of the night with a record assortment that featured something for everyone Qeven Mr. Leonardij. Toward the end of the festivities came the announcement of the names of the Prom King and Queen.Selected not only for their dynamite looks but also for their unsung service to the Class were Rob Coakley and Kim Wynkoop. Now, who could argue with those choices? Before we wished to admit it, this long- awaited evening was coming to an end and the revelers headed their separate ways. Those who were in attendance, though, won't soon forget the special night that was the 1985 Senior Prom. That was how most of us felt on the warm evening of June 19, as the Class of nineteen eighty-five was about to pass into Wilby High School history. Excitement ran high as the moment we had been anxiously anticipating had finally arrived. We formed lines in the gymnasium under the crisp supervision of the vice prin- cipals and then began our long march into the auditorium, took our seats, and let this auspicious ceremony begin. Speakers such as valedictorian Joanne Woodsworth and salutatorian Francine Slater gave us words of hope and encouragement for the future. Finally, diplomas were awarded and each of us breathlessly waited for our name to be called. But while we all were filled with joy as our graduations became official there was also an undercurrent of sadness be- cause we knew that this would be the last time we would all be together and that we'd never again see many of these people with whom we had shared so many memories. Farewell friends, and good luck. 13OfActivities xx H or Qs? as , ,af 'QI 44 Wi' up-is ' A. Activitiesf131 L S-,N f FW 132fActivities .. .
