lbs And Activities CLASS OF 1983 W1LBY HIGH SCHOOL WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT Remembrances In 1979 we entered as freshmen, a bit awed by the lessening of structure and guidance. For the first time, we were on our own. Our personal memories of the next four years differ but some events are common to us all. ’79 brought a jogging craze and a blue wave of designer jeans to complement our trimmer figures. Skylab fell from the sky and the Ayatollah Khomeni rose to power. His fanatic leadership and our protection of the Shah sparked the capture of our embassy in Tehran. Fifty-two Americar hostages were held in captivity for mon than a year. John Paul II became the firs Polish Pope. Rising oil prices and length ening gas lines caused widespread anger x the OPEC oil nations and the U.S. oi companies. This trend was to continue foi years, as was a wave of conservatism thai swept the nation, encompassing economic policies, social attitudes, and fashion Finally, the foreboding accident ai Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island radiat- ed fear of nuclear catastrophe. (con’t pg. 6) 3 DEDICATION We would like to congratulate Mrs. Antoi- nette Barber and Mr. William LaVallee on their being chosen the recipients of the dedica- tion of the 1983 yearbook. Their dedication and determination these past two years has enabled us to have a more enjoy- able and less expensive senior year. We are very fortunate to have had two such wonderful and caring people advise us through two very hectic years. We find it difficult to fully express our appreciation for all that these two special people have successfully accomplished for the Class of 1983. We thank you both very much for every- thing. YOU’RE THE BEST! 4 TRIBUTE Warm, gentle, friendly, compassionate. These attributes come to mind when one thinks of our recently retired principal, Mr. Domenic Co- riello. As Teacher, Counselor, Assistant Princi- pal, and Principal he dealt effectively with stu- dents on all academic levels. A man who could always be depended upon for a fair decision, a friendly word, or sound advice, he earned the affection of those he dealt with. For being such a fine man and able adminis- trator, we the class of 1983 wish to pay Mr. Coviello tribute. 5 Our sophomore year was easier, but a bit less adventurous, for we had settled down with our new friends and the daily routine of classes. Many seniors had to make a special trip to the Post Office when the draft was reinstated by newly elected President, Ronald Reagan. Shortly before the Winter Olympic games, Afghanistan was invaded by the Soviet Union. This fact made the stirring victory of our hockey team over the Soviets at Lake Placid all the sweeter. The entire world grieved when ex-Beatle John Lennon was shot down in New York. The mur- 6 ders of fifteen black children in Atlanta caused many of our students to wear green ribbons in sympathy just as yellow ribbons flew across the nation in support for our Hostages in Iran. All of America rejoiced in the return of the Hos- tages. They were greeted by an ecstatic nation that breathed a deep sigh of relief. “Who shot J.R.?” was the burning question of the day as millions tuned in to watch Dallas. We also tuned in to the spectacular eruption of Mount St. Helens and the magnificent pictures 7 For the first time, in Junior year, we noticed how young and silly the entering freshmen looked. We knew all the rules by now; though we didn’t quite have the run of the school we man- aged to do fairly well. ’81 brought the splendor of England’s Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Di and the appointment of Sandra Day O’Connor as the first female member of the U.S. Supreme Court. We were shocked to learn of the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the attempts on the lives of President Reagan and Pope John 8 Paul II, and the Soviet-backed enforcement of martial law in Poland with its subsequent re- pression of Solidarity. The space shuttle Columbia took her maiden voyage and Sony’s Walkman stole the music scene; video games and Rubic’s Cube became all-consuming crazes. We at Wilby were evaluated by an imposing board of educators. All of Waterbury shared in our pride when we received the maximum possi- ble accreditation - 10 YEARS! 9 Our senior year started quietly enough but soon we real- ized: “Hey, we’re SENIORS! We OWN this place!” Science came on strong in ’82 and ’83. Cable TV and home computers were almost as popular as E.T. Voyager II transmitted stunning pictures of Jupiter and anti-nuclear movements were on the rise. News stories of the Tylenol poisonings horrified us while the birth of England’s newest prince, William of Wales, delighted us. In the Soviet Union, Premier Leonid Breshnev died and was replaced by Yuri Andropov: here at Wilby, Mr. Domenic Coviello retired and Mr. Philip Leonardi took his place as Principal. We all grew up in these four years. World events shaped our lives, as did the individual ups and downs that each of us experienced. These personal changes, more than anything, enrich our memories of youth at Wilby High School. 10 ACADEMICS The faculty at Wilby High has always been dedicated to providing us with the best of education. Though occasionally we feel that a teacher or discipli- narian is working against our best interests, we can rest secure in the knowledge that they are trying as well as they know how to do what’s best for us. For many of us, teachers have served as coaches, friends or confidants and we are thankful to have known them. Thanks are due, also, to the administration and staff for having kept the school in such efficient form. «’till Mr. Louis Mazzafcrro Mr. John Spadaro Mr. Frank Lombardo Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Assistant Principal 14____________ Mr. Edward Aston Mrs. Jean Bablonka Mrs. Debra Balletto Guidance English Special Services FACULTY AND STAFF Mr. Joseph Balletto Mrs. Antoinette Barber Mrs. Diane Barrante Mr. Leo Beland Mr. Reid Biletz Special Sen ices Business Home Economics Metals Drafting Mrs. Catherine Boulay English Mrs. Lillian Brown Guidance Mr. Mario Ciarlo Physical Education Mr. Aldo Cipriano Bi-lingual Mr. Paul Cipriano Woods 15 Mr. David Coleman Social Studies Mr. James Condaris Music Dept. Exciting to know a whole new life is about to begin. Frightening because of fear of the unexpected, being on your own. It’s a time for ends and new beginnings. When a sense of pride begins knowing you have accomplished something in life. There is a sense of happiness but also sadness. You’re happy because you had met people who have become your best friends, but sad you may not see them again. When a sense of insecurity arises knowing that up to this time you had your parents guiding your life. But now the decisions will be your own, and wondering if you have made the right one haunts you. You may decide to go to college, join the Armed Forces, or just look for a job but it’s going to be tough. The name of the game is “Survival.” r SALVATORE ADDONA GENISE ANDREWS TRACY BAPTISTE FRANK ANGELICOLA SUSAN BISHOP LISA AUDIETIS TONI BEALE SHEILA BOATRIGHT SALVATORE ADDON A Sal ”Lct's go to breakfast!” Special People: Parents Activi- ties: Yearbook Dislikes: People that get on my nerves. Getting in shape, developing a skill, and working to improve are the core of sports. They contribute to self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment. Personal growth is enhanced by the friendships and under- standing you develop with your teammates, by the challenge of competition, and by the self-discipline involved in sport. Memories of rowdy bus-rides, individual highs and lows, end- less practices, and lunch at McDonalds are common to every athlete. For a high school athlete, sports are a fulfilling and unforgetable experience. BOYS BASKETBALL hront Row (I to r): Frank Locke, Martin Gatling, Jay Saunders, Marty Hayre, Wayne Williams. We're proud be- cause of their dedication, superlative sportsmanship and spectacular sea- son record. Mostly, we can be proud of our basketball team because our basketball team took pride in Wilby. This year we saw 20 young men working together as one smooth and efficient unit. Every one of them was dedicated to performing at his best and making that best even better. With a season record of 14-5 and an overall record of 19-6, they made the finals of the Class L State Cham- pionship under coaches Bob Free- man and Dave Kalach. Marty Hayre ( 20), a 6'4 for- ward, is among the best basket- ball players ever to attend Wilby High. He won the award for the best senior basketball player in the city of Waterbury. His consis- tency was the key to the team's success; he averaged 20 points and 20 rebounds per game. James Saunders ( 33), our huge (6’8”j center, averaged 12 rebounds per game and his shotblocking was in- strumental in many victories. Mi- chael Ycldell ( 25) solidified the team with his leadership abilities and ballhandling and passing skills. Wayne Williams ( 24) came in especially handy during the tournament with a game aver- age of 10 points. He and Frank Locke were important to defense. Locke ( 11) was a great help averaging 10 points also. Fresh- man Teddy McIntosh ( 10) was the team's sparkplug. His dynam- ic playing style and personality ig- nited many rallies during the tournament. The crowning achievement of the team, and the one that the players will remember long after game scores are ancient history, is the pride the players took in themselves and one another. This pride showed itself in the dedica- tion with which they worked to become a championship team, in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play that ran throughout the season, and. finally, in the broth- erly co-operation and deep friend- ship they developed with one an- other. 1st ROW. left to right: Alison Moran. The Wilby High School Girls Swim Team did a fine job this year. The coach was Aldo Cipriano. The team captains were seniors Michelle Dufresne and Emily Keck. The team’s record in terms of wins and losses was not very good, but as far as individual efforts were con- cerned the record was very impres- sive. Outstanding improvements were shown by Alison Moran, Kim Semple, Brenda Cipriano, Chris Ro- meo and others. There was also a strong sense of school spirit present as the girls supported one another enthusiastically. The season concluded with the Naugatuck Valley League swim- ming meet in which several of Wilby's swimmers showed well the results of their hard work. 1ST ROW. left to right: Andy Lugauskas. At that time Mr. Ray Shorn was decided on as coach, with Mr. Bill McEntce and Mr. Dom Gambino as assistants. He was also aided by Sar- geant Ring. Despite the good start in the City Jamboree (second place) the rest of the season could not live up to expectations. The lack of a vic- tory on their record did now show the success of the team, the intensity the players shared, and the “never say die” attitude that developed in the face of adversity. Several individuals managed to stand out, including tri-captains Derrick Norfleet ( 30), Paul El- mcndorf ( 41), Brian Green ( 56). and Leroy Hunter ( 58), each an All-City Team selection. Captained by seniors Gale Clay (35) and Lynette Funches (30) the Wildcats finished third in the N.V.L. and competed in the state tournament for the fourth straight year. The season's highlights were many, including a defeat of Holy Cross when that team was 9-0, and winning the Thomaston Christmas Tournament. Standouts were plentiful on the squad, led by Lynette, an All-City and All-NVL selection, as well as the choice as Outstanding City and League Player. Barbara Green (44), who led the team in scoring, also made the All-City team. Gale, Jenni- fer Jones (40), Nette Clayborne (43) and Debbie Walters also added to the team’s success. In individual events, Dennis Ar- royo finished 3rd in the diving, Jim Moran I Oth in the 500 yd. Freestyle. George 10th in the Backstroke, and Andrew Marcuse 9th in the Breast- stroke. Bright faces and lively spirits as- sembled on the sidelines of the foot- ball field as the Wilby High School Cheerleaders cheered on their team. The team was led by co-captains Maggie Bergin and Bonnie Smith and senior Laurie Goodrich. Many weeks of summer practices and hard work enabled the cheerleaders to en- ter the 1CF cheerleading competi- tion in camp and take the third place title. After a football season full of spirit, an exciting basketball season was just around the corner. We entered the basketball season with new enthusiasm and a new coach, Mrs. Mary Beth Ruby. Despite an aggravating 1983 Boys Tennis season in the won-lost column, many things were accomplished. Due to unyielding perseverance, new frontiers were explored and old habits expunged. Feats once thought insurmountable soon became everyday phenomenon. Other teams in the valley found Wilby no Sunday picnic. This remains no surprise considering the scorching service of Arben Kica, whose awesome court presence ap- pealed to all of his opponents’ senses. Kevin Canady’s lightning footwork was mesmerizing. The doubles team of Ke- vin Wilke and George Harnish played with all the subtlety of German jazz band. This can all be credited to the leader- ship of coach Leroy Kleinschmidt. With coaches like him, Wilby will al- ways remain a forerunner in athletic endeavors. GIRLS TENNIS Ursi Ron 11 to rt: Rochelle Burkman. Nancy Mancllo. Wendy Santa Maria. Judy Manfredi. Emily Keck, Judy Manfredi, and Anna Palladino played 1, 2, and 3 this year and were the team's Tri- captains. Wendy Santa Maria, An- drea Kuhr, and Cindy Gagne played 4,5, and 6. She worked so hard, improved so quickly and was always so quick to share her hope and high good spirits that she helped make our season the success it was. — Wr This year the track team did very well. The Wilby Girls Softball team ended their season with 5 wins and 13 losses. Although they did not have a very successful season as far as wins, they had a lot of fun and showed a great deal of spirit. The teams they were victorious over this year were Crosby twice, Kennedy twice, and Ansonia once. Captains for the Wildcats this year were Lenore Cloney and Anne- marie Christino, with co-captains Diane Mancini and Sherri Rybinski. Rudy Graziano was head coach, as- sisted by Robert Letsky. At season's end Annemarie re- ceived Honorable Mention for the NVL Team. Only a tie in the second to last game of the season blemished an otherwise perfect slate — of all losses. Game after game our madcap bunch found new ways to avoid the stigma of victory., Only Coach Mario Ciarlo’s legendary pa- tience allowed him and his assistant, Mr. Tirado, to accept the results of the long season with humor and a feeling of optimism about the future. Although our heroes just could not get the ball to bounce their way at all this season, the team could boast of some fine players who did feel a sense of determination, com- mitment, comradery and yes, pride. These are the highest goals of high school sports. GOLF Front: Danny Jewiss. 2nd Ron: Carmen Romeo, Joe Wilkinson. Back: Paul O'Donnell. Wilby did not have a large golf team this year, as usual. It's prob- ably because there are not too many future doctors in the school's student body. The boys on the team. Car- men, Paul. Joe, and Danny, didn’t have a lot of company but they had a lot of fun. They won a few matches and lost a few but they improved, showed great spirit, and got out of school early on match days, and isn’t that what’s really important. Again this year the lads came under the distinguished tutelage of coach Dan Chicchetti. The highlights of the sea- son for them included being able to golf on some of the finest courses in the state and hone their skills against top-notch competition. The 1983 Wilby Golf Team, e salute you! The Wilby High School 1982 Cross Country season was a very ex- citing one. It was especially impor- tant because it was the last year for veteran coach A1 Napoli, who is re- tiring after 35 years. Mr. Napoli was special to the team because his dedi- cation and hard work actually made the team what it was. This year’s record was 0-12. Although they did not have a win- ning record, each individual team member improved as the season went on. Long distance running, speed work-outs, and weight lifting were only a small part of the daily prac- tices. By the end of the season it could be clearly seen that if there weren’t so many teams better than Wilby’s, they would have been the best team in the N.V.L. ■tftoie.-GustavoTorrcncgra, Sean (Big I.egs) O'Connor, Andy Marcuse. They consist of interested students who willingly contribute their free time and energy participate in projects that are worthwhile or simply fun. These activities help form many friendships; they also give a sense of solidarity and goodwill to those who participate in them. Whether you were on the ski club, prom committee or dressed up for punk day, you should agree that extracurricular activities are a vital part of the high school experience. Mr. h'ossbender a d isor 105 HOMECOMING CORONATION 0,pu lence was the key word of our Homecom- ing Coro- nation. A week full of events, coordinat- ed by Mrs. Lili Head, leading up to the coronation fired the student body with W i 1 b y pride. M r . Leonardi crowned the honored electees. Frank Locke and An- gie Venters were crowned Mr. and Miss Junior with Dennis Arroyo and Jackie Butler their attendants. Heather Cipriano was crowned Miss Senior and Felix Framski, Mr. Senior. Their attendants were Lynette Funches and Roland St. Germain. Nancy Gallman entered as Miss Wilby with Joanne Cavallo as her attendant. Carmen Romeo wore his crown dashingly as Mr. Wilby; Kevin Brown attended him. Brenda DeJesus and Rose Hicks sang “The Way We Were.” Nancy DiMaria capped the festivities with a lovely ballet done to the song “Endless Love.” The entire event epitomized perfectly the taste, spirit and decorum of Wilby High. 106 Miss Junior. Angie V enters; Mr. Junior, trunk l.ocke; Allen- dun Is. Dennis Arroyo und Jackie Butler HOMECOMING PARADE AND DEDICATION purpose was to draw the entire stu- dent body into a spirit of pride and par- ticipation through many festive events; pep rallies, a coronation, a parade, and a football game. Our annual Homecoming Parade was held on the 30th. Mayor Bergin and other dignitaries watched floats from Wilby, Kennedy, Crosby, Holy Cross and the West Side Middle School parade by. Thanks to Mrs. Lili Head, who co-ordinated the entire event, our parade was held downtown for the first, but not the last, time in our history. After the parade, Wilby’s new football field was dedicated by Mr. Reardon, city athletic director. Then Kennedy met Wilby on the field for an inaugu- ral football game. The Parents Club was responsible for the refreshments and they did a fine job. for every- one had quite a refreshing time. 108 PUNK DAY reased I hair, mini-skirts, psychedel- ic T-shirts, safely- pins, and D e v o shades all lit the halls on Punk Day '82: a day to cut loose and let a wild new wave of fashion rage through Wilby. Those of us who kinked, greased, or spray-painted our hair, drew spangles, stars and thunderbolts on our faces and donned screamingly tasteless clothes found it easy to lurk behind our concealing shades and feel only contempt for our more conservative classmates. Those of us who spectated found it even easier to laugh at the new rockers' outrageous outfits. A day of light-hearted fun and high spirits for all is always welcome as is the chance to throw off old inhibitions and put on an obnoxious facade of pure Punk. After all “Rust Never Sleeps. no in “ARSENIC OLD LACE” the Wilby High Dra- ma Club presented as one of its Senior Class plays 'Arsenic and Old Lace.’ It ran on De- c e m b e r 10th, 11th, and 12th. The play was direct- ed by Lynn Y o v i n a and produced by Mr. Robert Perugini. The story is about the sweet, elderly Brewster sis- ters who murder lonely, old men with poisoned wine as an act of kindness, then bury them in their cellar. The two old women were portrayed by Laurie Goodrich and Michelle Dufrense. Their frantic neph- ew Mortimer and his fiancee, Elaine, were played by Gregory DiSisto and Lesley Hassinger. The villanous Jonathon was ominously played by David leronimo, with Sean O’Connor a riot as his henchman. Dr. Ein- stein. Other members of the cast were Carmen Romeo, Annemarie Christino, Karin Ritchon, David LoCas- cio, Dan Fruin, Robert Zappone, John Hughes, and the unforgettable Kathy Wilkinson. 112 “THE PAJAMA GAME” IX ilby Dra- m a Club’s Spring Production of “The Pajama Game” was a rousing musical directed by Lynn Yovina, pro- duced by Robert Perugini, and choreographed by Joanne Palla- dino that starred David LoCascio, Laurie Good- rich, Dennis Ar- royo, Lesley Hassinger and a support cast of 42. “Steam Heat” will be remembered always and made Lesley Hassinger, Michael McCormick and David Ieronimo shine as the stars we knew them to be. Anna Palladino and Dennis Arroyo soft-shoed their way into our hearts. Donnie Jannetty as Prez and Annemarie Christino, Kim Semple and Nancy Gallman as his ladies made us smile. Carmen Romeo’s late entrance as Mr. Hasler will remind us of a moment of intense panic and humor. Laurie and David’s tender love scenes and enthusiastic songs were perfect as were Dennis and Lesley’s humor and talent. We will never forget Les- ley’s strip tease or Dennis’ drunken rage. The dancers and cast made “Once-A- Year-Day”a show stopper! Each was a part of a very talented, caring and hardworking group that served to make “The Pajama Game” a success. 114 SUPER SENIOR SUPPER On May 17, the adminis- tration and fac- ulty took time and effort to honor eighty- three very spe- cial seniors: the Super Sen- iors. Because of their exam- plary conduct throughout four temptation-filled years at Wilby, these eighty- three and their parents were treated to a gourmet-quality dinner prepared and served by staff members. To show their appreciation to these fine students, faculty members humbled themselves just a little and waited on, served, and cleared dishes for the honored guests and their parents. There was a week long build up to the event around the school, especially after the media got wind of the notion. Newsmen and camera crews from the local T.V. stations came to Wilby to get background info and news- reel footage. On the big night cameras whirred and men and women with microphones made their way between tables to record the reactions of faculty, parents, and, of course, the Super Seniors. The entire evening was fun-filled and beautiful, and the whole state applauded Wilby’s effort in carrying out this worthwhile idea, one which all involved hope will become an annual affair. 117 UNFORGETTA BLE MOMENTS nterspersed among the block buster ac- tivities that highlight any senior year are the smaller qui- eter, and very enjoyable events that we hope we never forget. A few of them are depicted here. First; rallies. This year Wilby broke the record for number of rallies to show our support for our state finalist boys basketball team. The great- est rally of all time was neld on the day of the championship game featuring fight songs, cheerleaders, guest speakers, a slam dunk exhibition, and a virtual ton of confetti. Wow! Nor will we soon forget the Mr. and Miss Irresistable competition, with Marty Hayre and Nancy Gallman gar- nering those titles. Also, the Valentine Carnation Sale which allowed members of the Wilby family to send flowers to their special friends. The annual Student-Faculty Basket- ball Game treated us to a good-natured display of rough and rollicking hoop. Who won? Who cares! And let’s not forget the many holiday concerts that the band and chorus performed for us in the auditorium. These and many other activities served to build Wilby spirit all through the school year. 118 119 SENIOR PROM On May 14th the Class of 1983 held the Senior Prom at the beautiful Aqua Turf Country Club in South- ington. For our theme we chose the popular song, “Up Where We Be- long.” The band Seventh Avenue provided the evening’s music. We started off the night by re- ceiving a pink silk rose for the ladies, a pro- gram booklet, and commemorative glasses as keepsakes of this special and long-awaited event. After completing an elegant meal, dancing began; with beautiful ladies in gowns and handsome, tuxedoed gentlement filling the dance floor. Before long, Mr. Leonardi was announcing the names of the prom’s Queen and King. They were Lori Sherman and Mark Montrose. The dancing continued into the wee hours, and eventually we were all going our separate ways. Today as we look back on that evening, we realize how rare such moments are, and we are certain all those who shared this event enjoy their memories of the 1983 Wilby High School Senior Prom. 120 GRADUATION Fomp and circum- stance were the order of the evening on June 23 as the Class of 1983 passed into Wilby histo- ry. It was the day we all had been waiting for, the highlight for many students of their years at the school. It was also a sad time with many good- byes to be said. We made the long walk into the auditorium feeling a little nervous and unsure. We were surrounded by a sea of faces of family and well-wishers. We took our places on the flower laden stage under the Wilby banner and let the ceremony begin. Annemarie Christine, in her introductory remarks, gave a heartfelt thanks for being allowed to serve as class presi- dent. We were then treated to the humorous observations of salutatorian Sean O’Connor. Valedictorian Carmen Romeo designated us to be as spirited a graduating class as there ever was at Wilby. Sweaty palms then became common among the gradu- ates as the long roll call to award the diplomas took place. Some refused to believe it would really happen until they got that sheepskin in their hands. And it did really happen, for them and all of us on the stage that night as Wilby High School said farewell to one of its best graduating classes after a fine school year._______________________________ 129 Sahatore Xddona 99 Holiday Hill Waterbury. Connecticut 131 YEARBOOK EDITORS I hope that this yearbook has succeeded in its purpose. It’s not the quality or quantity of words and pictures that count (and I’ll admit that some low-quality work crept in), it’s the chain of associations-the memories-that these words and pictures evoke that are the important things, that is the yearbook’s only purpose. I hope you have good memories. 132 Frank Angclicola Cindy Gagne Photography Editor Business Manager Lori Sherman Clubs Editor Terri-Ann Schuster Sports Editor David LoCascio Art Editor Luanne Jamele Seniors Editor Mr. LaVallee would like to thank Emily and all the editors for their hard work.
