The Times Of Our Lives As freshmen we had many dreams Mountains we could climb! Some still remain, but now it seems They are but hills of time. Throughout the years, we've gained insight On how to play the game. We’ve learned to cheer, to sing, to fight For good old Wilby’s name. At times we’ve wished it all would end. Some trapped by the routine. Have wished to stop the tiring trend Along the days unseen. But it’s happiness that we’ll recall As memory survives We’ll realize that throughout it all They were the best times of our lives. by Elizabeth New Class of ’77 As freshmen we had many dreams Mountains we could climb! He graduated from Woodrow Wil- son Grammar School and Crosby High School. After graduation, he attended Cheshire Academy for one year where he was active in school politics and sports. The next year he went on to Providence College where he majored and received a BA degree in Social Studies in 1956. Following graduation, Mr. Perugini spent two years active duty in the U.S. Army being stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After receiving his Honorable discharge, he enrolled at Central Connecticut State College where he gained his Masters Degree in Education. The first teaching assignment held by Mr. Perugini began in 1960-61 at Sprague School in the Waterville section of our city. It was at this time that be began his extra- curricular activities with his students. He coached the baseball and basketball teams, winning city championships for two consecutive years in 1965 and 1966. Mr. Perugini taught fourth, sixth and seventh grades. While teaching at Sprague School, a very important event took place in his life. Mr. Perugini met and married the former Joan DiStasio, a teacher in the Waterbury school system. Together they are the proud parents of three daughters, Maria, Andrea, and Gioia. In the fall of 1970, he left Sprague School to teach World History and Economics at Wilby High School. It was at this time that Mr. Perugini enrolled at Fairfield University to study in the field of guidance and counseling. He completed his sixth year studies and is presently teaching psychology, sociology and U. S. history at Wilby High School. Mr. Perugini was junior class advisor for 1975, which helped seniors towards a sur- plus in their treasury. It was a warm compassionate feeling that the class of '77 had in dedicating their yearbook to you, Mr. Perugini. 9 Tribute Theresa Cretei I a Mrs. Theresa Cretella was born and reared in Waterbury. She graduated from Wilby High School and worked in business for a number of years. Determined to be a teacher, she went back to College and gradua- ted 1973 from Central Connecticut College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secretarial Studies and a Minor in Social Business. She is presently attending Bridgeport University in preparation for her Masters Degree. In 1974 Mrs. Cretella entered Wilby teaching Steno and Typing. She enjoyed working with the students and gave much of her time in helping them with their year- book for the years of '76 and '77. With the conscientious help given us, we the class of '77 pay TRIBUTE to you, Mrs. Cretella. Our Principal Domenic V. Coviello Mr. Coviello was educated locally and later matriculated at the University of Connecticut where he received the Bachelor of Science Degree. Continuing his education at the University of Hartford, he earned his Master of Education and Sixth Year Certificate. Mr. Coviello was a Guidance Counselor until June 1969. In Sept- ember, 1969, Mr. Coviello was appointed a Vice Principal. It seemed he was well on his way to the goal he had set for himself; and in Sept- ember, 1972, he was appointed Principal. He is known throughout the corridors. He sees many of the students every day. Many of the students look up to him as he passes them by in the corridors. They know he is there to help them whenever it is needed. He, therefore, hopes that this helping hand will enable the students graduating this year of '77 to remember that he tries to motivate the student in the right direction. For him it has been a joy and sometimes not so much a joy, but the outcome for the student's welfare is always there. Mr. Coviello hopes that the Class of '77 will find the community, state, and nation without difficulty by the knowledge each one has en- deavored here at Wilby. n Our Vice Principals Mr. Louis Mazzaferro Mr. Mazzaferro Maz , as he is commonly known among students was born and educated in Waterbury. He attended Old Ivy (Crosby) where he spent four memorable years. From there he furthered his education at Fairfield University. After years of hard work he received his Bathelor's Degree in English. Continuing his education, Mr. Mazzaferro was awarded his Master's Degree and a Six Year Degree in Secondary School Adminis- tration from the same University. Mr. Maz taught English for nine years at Wilby, before obtaining his title of Vice-Principal. The Class of '77 would like to extend our appre- ciation for all of the strength and guidance that you have given us throughout the years. We wish you good luck in the future and much happiness in the years to come. Mr. Philip Leonardi Mr. Leonardi is a true Waterburian having been born and raised here. He attended a local grammar school and his high school years were spent at Sacred Heart High School. Mr. Leonardi con- tinued his education at Providence Col- lege, where he was awarded his Bach- elor of Arts Degree in English. Mr. Leonardi was destined to go on in the field of education. He then attend- ed the University of Hartford, where he earned his Master's Degree. He was granted the opportunity to participate in the Institutes of Italian at Central Connecticut State College. He was also an active member of the Afro- American Studies group at Cornell University. Mr. Leonardi was involved along with a select group of adults and teenagers in the Drug Dependency Institute Internship Program sponsored by Yale University School of Medicine. He was awarded his Sixth Year Degree at the University of Connecticut. Although it was a fair season, Coach Fred O' Brien commented that it was a good season marred by many injuries. He stated that the attitude of the players was outstanding. Wilby was quite pleased with the individual tal- ents possessed by the team. Among these talents was Mark Bairn. Mark was awarded the Nick Mam- bruno Trophy for the outstanding senior player in the city from Mayor Bergin during the Thanks- giving Day game. Wilby was represented in the All-City team by Joe McKeeman, Mark Bairn, and Bemie Davis. Joseph McKeeman and Mark Baim were also chosen to the All-NVL team. An honorable mention to the All-State team was given to Joe McKeeman. Another honor received by a Wilby Football player appeared under the title Wilby has own Love Story. This story featured David Love, Wilby's defensive standout as the Player of the Week . The tri-captains this year were Bernie Davis, Mark Baim and Joseph McKeeman. The Wildcats 1976 Cross Country team was led by tri-captains: Robert New- ell, Jerry Brown, and Earl Page. There was a delay in this year's season be- cause the Board of Education failed to appoint a coach until half way through the season. So Wilby's Wildcats Cross Country team ended with a total of five wins and seven loses. The team was coached by Mr. Richard Mellon. In the city's public school track meet both the Wilby Wildcat team and Bob Newell finished in second place. The team finished sixth in the Naugatuck Valley track meet. The Wildcat Cross Country Team, through all dismay, had a pleasing year and are hoping for an even better season next year. The only two seniors and Captains of the Wilby team are Mike Cruz and Tim Figgs. Wilby Girls' Basketball team 1976- 77 season concluded with a 5-13 record. Although our record was only fair, we did have an improved season playing many tough games. The Wildcats were lead in scoring by Carm Rinaldi and Sarah Grossman. Sarah was also the team's leading rebounder. Marcia Phelps, the team’s first year coach, guided the team through many exciting games, including the Wildcats upset over Crosby knocking the Bulldogs out of the tournament. Miss Phelps commented that it was a good season and that the girls progres- sed a long way in a short period of time. She felt that the determining factor be- hind our season was the hard work the girls put into the game. Miss Phelps also attributed the title of most valu- able player to Sarah Grossman. Sarah also made the All-City Team and sec- ond string on the All MUL team. Miss Phelp's prospects for next year is for a much better season. Qualifying for the CIAC State Tournament was deserving, rewarding, and most of all exciting for the team. Over the past three years, the team has made outstanding improvement. The season ended with a 10-8 win loss record and a 7-3 record in the city. Loosing ten seniors is not the best thing that could happen to the team, says Coach Cheryl Savage. But there will be a lot of qualified sophomores, juniors, and seniors coming back next season. Captains were: Sarah Grossman, Do- reen Miller and Cheryl Westerberg. Both a Girls' and a Boys' match were played simulanteously. A match consists of 6 singles' sets and 3 doubles' sets. Although the Girls' team was outmatched, in many cases there were many individual victories. The Boys' team won 4 team matches, some by the score of 7-2. This repre- sents a great individual effort on behalf of ALL 8 boys. The Girls' team consisted of 18 members, 11 of whom had not played before. Since many of these beginners are freshmen, the prospects for the team are good in the com- ing years. We are losing only 3 seniors this year, Alison McGeogh, Tina Franco and Lova- ble Les Birenbaum. Alison is the first AFS student in Waterbury, and came here for a year of schooling from Wells, England. Tina arrived from sunny North Caroline during this year and played the 2 position, always with a smile. She also served as this year's co-captain. Les has been nosing around the tennis team for 4 years, and served as the Boys' captain, in addition to playing the lonely 1 position. Heather Platt is this year's winner of the Francis E. Nargi Award. That's using your bod! Selected for this year's NVL Tennis Classic were Cathy Heaton, Tina Franco, Lori Fraser, Heather Platt, Alison McGeogh, Laurie Cammisa, Les Birenbaum, Steve Franco, Vin ’Star' Davis, Mike Habrukovich, Jim Mobilio, and Mark Wilson. 109 FIRST YEAR PLAYERS 1ST. Though they tried very hard, they lost the next 12 straight. Of the 12 losses, 6 were extremely close calls that very easily could have been wins. We lost the services of our 3 man -- Chris Melchiore, but he was capably re- placed by 2 newcomers -- Paul Santoro and Chris Keeler. One of the highlights of the season was George Baltrush's low score of 76 at Western Hills Golf Course. This was the best score turned in by a Wilby player in ten years. George is a very consistent player, and we'll hear more about him next year. Our captain, Charlie Putetti, won 50 percent of his matches, which is a very com- mendable record. He will undoubtedly play college golf, and we are sure he will do well. Paul Santoro, who devoted his time and energy to playing football for three years, decided to play golf this year. We are only sorry he didn't decide this three years' ago. Rounding out the team we have Dave Silverman, Chris Keeler, and Greg Jewiss. Though they may not have won matches, they certainly showed a spirit and a never-give- up attitude which is a credit to them and the team. 112 Paul Santoro, Coach Cicchetti, and Chuck Putetti Greg Jewiss George Baltrush Chris Keeler 113 Players are quiet as Silverman putts.
