Edwards DEDICA TION DOMENIC V. COVIELLO Mr. Domenic Coviello The occasion seems rare, that we as students have the opportunity to be involved at the ‘beginning’ or to be participants in the ‘first’ of things to be — WOW! Our time has come and we are proud to be the class afforded the opportunity to honor Mr. Domenic Coveillo in his first year of principalship. Mr. Coviello, a native Waterburian, was educated locally and later matriculated at the University of Connecti- cut where he received the Bachelor of Science Degree. Continuing his education at the University of Hartford, he then earned two additional degrees — Master of Education and Sixth Year Certificate. While pursuing advanced degrees, Mr. Coviello was an instructor in Mathematics at the University of Connecticut for two years. He also held the responsibility of a Supervising Teacher in Education at the University and an instructor with the Upward Bound Program sponsored by the University of Hartford. Twice he has served as a member of the Evaluating Committee of New England. Mr. Coviello’s teaching experience also includes the town of East Haven, Connecticut, having terminated his employment there to return to Waterbury. For several years he was a teacher at Croft (now Kennedy High School) before coming to Wilby. Upon transferring, he left the classroom and assumed a new role in his career as a Guidance Counselor, a responsibility he held until June, 1969. In September, 1969, Mr. Coviello was appointed a Vice Principal. It ssemed he was well on his way to the goal he had set for himself. And so it was in September, 1972, he was appointed Principal. It is with joy that we the class of’73 dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Coviello! We join your wife, the former Joan Porzenheim, your daughters Martha, Beth, and Donna, your friends, the faculty and the students with a gi- gantic salute — your first graduating class as Principal of Wilby High School. 5 LOUIS PONZILLO Mr. Louis Ponzillo was born and reared in Waterbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Wilby High School and continued his education at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. He received his degree in History and Eng- lish from the School of Education. Presently, he is attending the University of Bridgeport in preparation for his Masters Degree. In addition to teaching Social Studies at Wilby, he teaches at DAYTOP INC., in the High School Equivalency Program and is a group leader in the Drug Seminar Course. In 1969, the Class of ’73 entered Wilby and so did Mr. Ponzillo. The relationship blossomed as the years passed and the rapport was such that his selection as the Junior Class Advisor was a natural one. To continue our success we re-elected him as the Senior Class Advisor. The Class of 73 pays TRIBUTE to you, Mr. Ponzillo for your conscientious help and inspiration given usdur- ini' iinr at ilh AS WE REFLECT PRINCIPAL During your past four years in Wilby, I have grown to know you, my first senior class. You came to Wilby from many different walks of life. You have contributed to making our school community work. Wilby in turn has built the bridge necessary lor you to cross to help make this community, state and nation even greater. The world will turn off no man if he knows where he is going. The vehicle to cross this bridge lies within you knowledge, initiative, motivation, perseverance, and just plain hard work. It has been a joy for me to have been associated with you. I wish you well in your endeavors and hope you will have the success you so richly deserve. 8 VICE PRINCIPALS Mr. Louis Mazzaferro Mr. Mazzaferro, 'Mr. Maz’, as he is affection- ately called by students, was born and reared in Waterbury. His high school years were spent at Crosby which prepared him to enroll at Fairfield University. Four years later, he received his Bache- lors Degree in English. Continuing his thirst for knowledge. Mr. Maz was awarded his Masters Degree and a Sixth Year Degree in Secondary School Administration from the same institution that had nurtured his mind as an undergraduate student Fairfield University. Prior to the position as Vice Principal. Mr. Maz taught English for nine years, here, at Wilby. The Class of'73 wishes Mr. Mazzaferro the best of luck and happiness in the years to come at Wilby High School. Mr. Philip Leonardi Mr. Leonardi is a native Waterburian having attended a public grammar school and later graduating from Sa- cred Heart High School. His Bachelor of Arts Degree was awarded to him at Providence College. The personal need to continue his education was evident after his ma- triculation at the University of Hartford where he re- ceived his Masters Degree. Mr. Leonardi was afforded the opportunity to partici- pate in the Institutes of Italian at Central Connecticut State College and w as also a participating member of the Afro-American Studies group at Cornell University. Recently, he was among a select group of adults and teenagers involved in the Drug Dependency Institute In- ternship Program sponsored by Yale University School of Medicine. In 1966-67 he received a fellowship at the University of Catalina with a major concentration in Italian. Pres- entls. he is enrolled at the University of Connecticut for the Sixth Year Degree Program. The Senior class wishes to extend to Mr. Leonardi good luck and fruitful years at Wilby because of his un- derstanding. dedication, and professional approach to his job as Vice Principal. SWIMMING Even though our Swim Team’s record was 1-12, this did not accurately reflect the swimmers ability. This was evident in the State meet where Wilby placed 6th in a field of 17 schools. Wilby, by no means, was smothered in the regular season. Many of their meets came right down to the last relay which produced much excitement. The team was captained by Scott Serefine, Dave Rosa, and Marty Kunofsky. Mr. Ned Fossbender was the head coach, and Alex Jacovino the assistant coach. With Wilby having a young and inexperienced team for the most part, we were suc- cessful in many respects. 82 I hope this water is warm Kramer will you please go What a Hairdo. The team qualified for the Naugatuck Valley League (N.V.L.) Meet with several teammates tieing and setting school records in the City Meet. The N.V.L. Meet saw Willie Parker run the 440 and 220 yard dash, respectively. Carlos Neves participated in the Mile and Two Mile run while Donall Nixon exhibited his skill in the Long Jump event. The City Meet showed Neves setting a school record and placing fifth in the Two Mile run with a time of 10: 46 seconds. Neves had demonstrated his skill earlier against Holy Cross running the Mile in 4:51 seconds set- ting another school record. Parker’s time of 54 seconds flat in the 440 tied still another school record which placed him second in the event. Nothing seemed to dampen Parker’s determina- tion as he continued to demonstrate his talent against Crosby. This time he ran the 220 yard dash in 23.4 sec- onds, again tieing a school record. The City Meet contin- ued to show off the talents of Wilby. Michael Stevenson placed third in the Triple Jump with a distance of 36 feet and 11 inches. Nixon placed fourth in the Long Jump with a distance of 18 feet and 8 inches. Tim Paschali, in the Long Jump event, had a distance of 18 feet and 6 inches which gave him a fifth placement. The team is proud of its achievement this year and is enthusiastically looking toward next year when they will surpass the standing records. After getting off to a slow start by losing 3 of their first 5 games, the Cats gradually picked up by going on a 6 game win- ning streak. Having a young team with only two seniors on the squad, Sam McIntosh and George Davis, Wilby is sure to be a threat in the State next year. Wilby had a very ex- citing tournament showing by eliminating Bristol Central in its first game and losing to a tough sec- ond ranked Warren Hard- ing team in a tense second game. Harding eventually went on to become class “L” State champs. Captain James Arline capped a fine season with his selection on the Nauga- tuck Valley League second team and honorable men- tion Class “A” All State. Lou Canady, mean- while, received a first team All Valley spot and was a second team selection on both the All-State and All City teams. ..... The competition was good, several times, only one or two strokes was the deciding factor in the match. The golf team did not win many matches none-the-less, each member won the praise of Coach Daniel Cicchetti and Captain Frank Santoro for excellent sportmanship and the “never say die” attitude. 92 Lining up a “Character Builder The Swinger! In this capacity he also served as the number one single and double player. Two other seniors, Dave Rosa and Greg Choney also played on the squad. While neither of these players had much experience, both turned in commendable performances. The Girls’ Varsity Tennis Squad was co-captained by Margaret McCarthy and Robin Weisman, both seniors. The lack of experience contributed to the few team wins for the season. Almost Love, Greg. I should've started sooner. 95 WILBY OPPONENT 0 Naugatuck 7 5 Sacred Heart 6 1! The team posted a 5-12 rec- ord and was co-captained by Bill Matz- kevich, who served four years on varsity and Jim Arline, who served three years. Losing four games by one run and two games in extra innings, Wilby’s record could have easily ended on a winning note. Hitting better than many of their opponents in their losses, the Cats were often victimized by defensive errors. Under the capable guidance of Mrs. Lillian Brown, the 1973 Yearbook Staff began initial preparations in the construction of its yearbook during September. In the months that followed, the staff discussed, debated, and many times disagreed over arrangement and setup. This only served, in the end, to strengthen the staff as a body and to produce a meaningful yearbook. The theme “Reflections was chosen as a preliminary step, and the book centers around this topic. Layout and total design of the yearbook was under the direction of Bar- ry Kramer and his capable staff, as Mike Daddona served to oversee the operation. Special mention should be given to Joe Morkys, Mickey Dor- so, Terri Shepherd, Martin Kunofsky, Doreen Natelle, and Loretta An- drews, who each gave unselfishly of their time to make this yearbook possible. All those who have worked on the yearbook receive many thanks and satisfaction from their fellow classmates for a fine job. '77 The Class of 73” (2- Pearl A. Kramer Notary Public 128 CLASS EVENTS JUNIOR PROM, JUNE 3, 1972 NEWSPAPER DRIVE, NOVEMBER 7, 1972 ST. VALENTINE’S DAY CHICKEN BARBEQUE, FEBRUARY 14, 1973 130 GRADUATION, JUNE 25, 1973 i3i HELLO DOLLY, APRIL 12-15, 1973 IF YOU DON’T KNOW M E B Y NOW, SENIOR PROM, JUNE 16, 1973 CLASS H1STOR Y We entered the strange and unfamiliar halls of Wilby High School, with a suspicion as to what our course for the next four years will be. During our first few days as f reshmen some of us might be caught wandering the halls with that certain lost look as we searched for those illusive room numbers. We had to adjust to the fact that we were the lowest of students, and this was never to be forgotten by the upperclassmen. A few weeks calmed our uncertainties and each of us began to gel involved in the school’s clubs and activi- ties. W'ould be athletes began to seek out various sports, to try to make a mark for themselves. A big undertaking our first year was the W POP School Spirit Petition Contest. Although W ilby only took fourth place, this endeavor served to boost our school spirit. A major modification at this time was the institution of a new dress code. For the first time ties and jack- ets were not required at school. High in the nation's interest during this period was the Vietnam War. Although President Nixon was withdrawing thousands of troops, the war raged on. Final exams concluded one of the most challenging years we had faced so far. Now we look back on our freshman year as a certain memorable yesterday. The greetings of old friends, and finding of new ones are what made the first days ol our sophomore year memorable. After adjusting to our new classrooms and teachers, we again found ourselves endeavoring to make our way through another year at Wilby. Posters began to appear throughout the halls. After an exciting week of campaigning, we elected our soph- omore class officers: W illiam Matzkevich. President: Steve Meo, Vice President: Tracy Orkin. Secretary: Nancy D'Agostino, Treasurer. Our sports season began w ith our football team leading off the aelion. We had a tough team which proved itself successful at the conclusion of the football season. The Vietnam War was still being fought, and President Nixon was still withdrawing troops. Peace talks in Paris were being held but peace was illusive. Sophomore year atWilby was soon coming to an end. Class rings were ordered and each student eagerly awaited his. Perhaps the most controversial news that stirred in the halls of Wilby was the elimination of Final Exams. Because of a Student Council project, the exams we had taken as freshmen were the last we would see in high school. The year ended, and we once again departed from the halls of Wilby for our summer vacation. September, 1971 . We're upperclassmen!!! Our first action as Juniors was to receive our class rings, and everyone did their best to show them off. Soon posters began to fill the hall of Wilby, as we elected our Junior class officers: Bill Matzkevich, Presi- dent; Joby Bochicchio, Vice President; Tracy Orkin, Secretary; Carol Lefkowitz. Treasurer. Mr. Louis Ponzillo and Miss Claire Moynihan were chosen as class advisors and it was under their guid- ance we began to organize our next event. The Homecoming Dance, with music provided by the Pneumonics, not only gave the class a good start financially, but also was a social success. In sports this year our football team captured the City Championship and the basketball team also com- peted for a winning season, moving on to the tournament. This year Mr. Joseph R. Membrino, principal of Wilby since I960, and a teacher for many years previous, announced his retirement plans. Mr. Domenic Coviello will next year become the new principal. Our Junior year was coming to an end amidst plans for our Junior Prom. On June 3rd the sun set on a magnificent scene occurring in Harrison Inn. at Heritage Village, Southbury. The theme ot this most digni- fied night was “Friends”. Music and entertainment was provided by Sheffield Spring. I ndeed it had been a memorable Junior year and all of us looked forward to our final step. September. 1972, could offer the hope, happiness and anticipation each one of us had dreamed of. No year could boast of more promising experiences and treasured moments. Mr. Louis Ponzillo would return for his second year as our senior class advisor. After a vigorous cam- paign, student officers were elected as follows: Bill Matzkevich. President: Joby Bochicchio, Vice-President; Tracey Orkin, Secretary; and Chris Holmes. Treasurer. The sports season began with our football team capturing the City Title. The basketball team reached the Cl AC tournament, but was defeated in the second game of the series by Warren Harding of Bridgeport. For the first time, the Cross Country team sported a winning season and congratulations should be given to Mr. 134 Wise and the team. The baseball, swimming, and track teams were always striving for a victory. A student council assembly was planned early in the year under the direction of its newly elected officers: Allen Peck, President; Barry Kramer. Vice-President; Lynn Ciarlo, Secretary: and Elaine Overton. Treasur- er. The purpose of the assembly was to introduce Freshman and Sophomores to the activities the school had to offer. Our Yearbook was widely discussed topic throughout our last year. Seniors could be heard asking their opinions of proofs almost every day. Mrs. Lillian Brown was chosen as Yearbook Advisor and it was under her guidance that a staff was formed to put out the best yearbook in Wilby history. All of us remember the many times we were caught offguard on a yearbook camera day. Class activities were underway with two events gaining the title most profitable . The halls became filled with newspapers until the November 7th paper drive was successfully completed. Another fund raising event was the “St. Valentine’s Day Chicken Barbeque” which was held in the Wilby Cafeteria. The highlight of the Senior year came to many seniors the nights of April 12th through 15th as the Senior Class presented the Broadway musical “Hello Dolly”. The show was directed by Mr. Michael Scacco, and financially managed by Mr. Gerald Dandanoli. The total cast of forty-one seniors received a standing ova- tion each night of their performance as they delighted their audiences. What cast member can ever forget the good times; the trips to Southport, Redding, and Wallingford: the billboard on Thomaston Avenue: the downtown escapades with a horse, buggy, and sound car: and the booth at the Naugatuck Valley Mall. Ev- eryone in the cast will remember how, thanks to Channel 8 Action News, Hello Dolly became the first play of Wilby High School to receive a television preview. An event that we have all been waiting for June 16th our Senior Prom was held at the Park Plaza Hotel in New Haven. “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” was our theme and our music, compliments of “Joye” was the perfect accent to the night’s festivities. During our four years at Wilby High School there were both times of immense joy and sorrow. The slay- ings of both Martin Luthur King, Jr.and Robert F. Kennedy will leave scars among our many memories, as so will the war in Vietnam which has “so-called” been put to an end during our last months at school. A part of our joyful memories, which goes to prove that times are changing, is that as of October 1972, eighteen year olds had reached the age of majority. Graduation Day, Thursday June 21st, came at last. All seniors were a bit disappointed to hear that be- cause of weather conditions the graduation would be held at Kennedy Auditorium rather than at Library Park. All of us, however, adjusted to the change. So, fellow Seniors, we have only to complete the journey with the short walk up the aisle to receive our diploma. As we do, let us wipe aside the tear for the past and march away with a smile of the future. We now know that Wilby is only a part of our fond Reflections”. A CKNO WLEDGMENTS The Wilby High School Class of 1973 wishes to thank its many bene- factors for their efforts in our behalf. Gur appreciation goes to: Mr. William Kramer, Business Advisor, who has worked tirelessly to keep us financially solvent. Mr. Edmund Fossbender whose patience, for- titude, and excellent photographic skills have made possible the pictorial sections of our yearbook. M iss Mary Cammisa whose many hours of typing have contributed to the ultimate suc- cess of our book. A very special expression of gratitude goes to Mrs. Lillian Brown, Yearbook Advisor, for her endless hours of supervision and her matchless suggestions.
