tiny melts away the r have nej recapture for eact fc|ur thoughts %' Mt. Everpslgik ancfPacBSBp In this age of information we are kissed by confusion with daylight drawing us nearer to life’s blackened eyes Few of us having tasted a sound Instead we have foolishly spent precious time raising and lowering one another Peering Our silhouettes leaping inside a merry-go-round that will indeed throw each of us off its plasticized figures 2 And so we should find it hard to reason with what’s going on in the world today We better get back on the human track to disengage from strangers in a strange land So we can recognize the bell of truth when we hear it ring Won't you stop and listen to the children sing Cynthia Murray ’72 5 TRIBUTE We, the 1972 Graduating Class would like to pay special tribute to two men, Mr. Joseph R. Membrino and Mr. Gerald Dandanoli, who have contributed greatly to our growth as students. Mr. Membrino has served the educational profession for many years, as both a teacher and administrator. As principal of Wilby High School, since 1960. he has devoted himself to the task of improving and developing our school. We, the Class of '72, wish to thank Mr. Membrino for his dedication in guiding us in our educa- 6 tional pursuits and hope he enjoys a fruitful retirement. Mr. Dandanoli and our Class of’72 arrived at Wilby in the same year, 1968. He readily became involved in all aspects of life at Wilby showing enthusiastic interest in many extracurricular activites. Mr. Dandonoli has been our class advisor and has devoted many hours to our programs, proms and special projects. For these reasons, we the Class of '72 salute Mr. D. 7 F A C U L T Y Many desperate men brood on crisis Surely there is tragedy in the world today But one generation has never contained itall Nor ever will In wise process of evaluation There is still the bubble of spontaneous laughter, the brilliance of a sunbeam the daring air of spring the worth of friends People working with People for People Finding solutions by reason. Some prefer to be thankful where they can We are grateful for our association with you, And think it is time to say so. VICE-PRINCIPALS Mr. Leonardi, Mr. Mazzaferro. FOOTBALL TEAM The 1971 -72 Wilby Football Team had a very successful 4 • 4 record this season, once again winning the City Championship. The team was led by tri- captains Aldo Albini, Ken McKeeman, Al Staten and seniors Mike Lugauskas, Scott Luschenat, Dale Ciccarelli, Tom Robustelli, Dave Murray, Larry Butler, Charlie Pagano, Bill McCarthy, and Mike Mucci. In our opening game an inexperienced Wildcat team was defeated by Hillhouse 26 - 6. The Cats growled against Crosby and whipped the Bulldogs 24 - 0. Watertown fell 20 • 0. Next . . . We took third place in the jamboree. In the tournament the team was defeated with a score of Wilby 67, Warren Harding 89. The whole team was outstanding and always played with every effort. Co-Captain Tom Dupont was honored for his outstanding basketball abili- ties by being named to the All-city, All-NVL, and All-State teams. He was also the recipient of the Billy Finn Award and the Doc. SWIM TEAM The Wilby Swim Team had a record of 3 wins and 12 loses in dual meet competition. This was no indication of the ability possessed by the Wilby ducks. The team this year was greatly hurt by lack of depth. Coach Fossbender and assistant coach Alex Jacovino had to depend on double winner perform- ances from members Bob Bolan, Tony Russo, Scott Serafine and Howie Silver- man excelled in and frequently took first place in 400 yard freestyle relay along with their individual events. Chris Bolan also took first place in the majority of the 100 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle events. Alan Russo and Dave Murray excelled in the 100 yard breaststroke event. Many meets went down to the last two events where Wilby's lack of depth prevailed. The boys did an exceptional job in the State Class M CIAC final swim meet. The ducks placed fourth out of 18 participating schools. The last relay smashed the state record twice. First in the State semi-finals with an excellent time of 3:46.1. We are confident that the team will improve when the younger swimmers reach maturity in the coming years. SENIORS: Left to Right: Chris Bolan(co-captain), Dave Murray, Howard Silver- man, Bob Bolan(co-captain). 1st Row: Dave Jannetty, Scott Luschenat, Vinnie Torretta, Lou Salamone, Ken McKeeman. 2nd Row: Jeff Lovejoy, Bill Matzevich, Ron Cappucetti, John Roscoe. 3rd Row: Joe Lee, Dennis Wright, Mike Brennan, Bob Lobraico, Steve Corbo. 4th Row: Ed DiPrimio, Al Curtis, Pete Heald, Jim Arline, Coach Ciarlo. BASEBALL TEAM The Wilby Baseball Team ended up with a 4-14 won lost record, which was not really as bad as the record shows. This is proved by the fact that Wilby lost at least 7 games by 1 or 2 runs which if they went the other way could have turned the whole year around. Wilby played 16 games without the services of co-captain Howie Land. At the beginning of the season, Howie was the top pitcher but he tore ligaments in his right leg which kept him out for the year. However the play of seniors Dave Jannetty, Scott Luschenat and co-captain Vin Torretta should not go without some attention. Jannetty did a very good job at second and was always on base. Luschenat had his best year by hitting at least .300 and playing good defense in right field and co-captain Vin Torretta showed ample leadership behind the plate and came up with a big hit to beat city rival Sacred Heart. Next year players like Jim Arline, who set a city and N.V.L. record by striking out 21 men in a game against Kennedy and then tied the record against Naugy. Bill Matzkevich, who pitched better baseball than his record showed. Mike Brennan, Dennis Wright, Ron Cappuccetti and Bob Lobraico should give coach Ciarlo a good nucleus for a more successful team in 1973. 84 SENIORS: Scott Luschenat, Dave Jannetty, Vinnie Torretta, Lou Salamone, Ken McKeeman. 85 1st Row; Seated: Ciro Scognamiglio, Kaz Rybak, Earl Hunter, Mike Lugauskas, Larry Butler. 2nd Row: Tim Francois, Charlie Moss, Mike Turonis, Bill Walton, Coach Freeman. 3rd Row: Ed Lawson, Lou Santos, Steve Jennings, John McKenna, Jack Battista. 4th Row: John Rek, Salvatore Longo, Carlos Neves, Lloyd Miller. TRACK TEAM Carlos Neves set a new school record by running the 2 mile in 11:04 which was formerly held by Larry Chapman 11:55.8. Larry Butler — high jump tied with a 6'1 jump with Lemarc Henderson from 1966. Mike Lugauskas set a new school record, which was formerly held by Jim Battistrada, throwing the discuss 132'4 . In the 440, Ciro Scognamiglio placed third in the N.V.L. with a time of 54.02. Larry Butler tied the school record at 9'6 in pole vaulting. 89 SENIORS: Earl Hunter, Larry Butler, Mike Lugauskas, Kaz Rybak. Bruce Carusillo. Peter Angrave, Craig Smeeth, Frank Santoro. GOLF TEAM Wilby's Golf Team had a winless season this year. However individual efforts on the part of Craig Smeeth, Peter Angrave, Bruce Carusillo and Frank Santoro were noteworthy. 92 .0. r V • , •V - -p. • ' t : ' |rcfeS4fe r. 4C b itefev. - 1st Row: John Summit. 2nd Row: Frances Nargi, Kathy Woitke, Margaret Woitke, Cheryl Salerno, Mr. Killer(Coach). 3rd Row: Karen Chevrier, Maureen McCarthy, Margaret McCarthy, Robin Weisman, Bob Gurwicz. 4th Row: Randy Giampetruzzi, Lynn Clyma, Bruce Kramer, Richard Ferris.
