MR. JOHN McKENNA Arnold College was the starting point of Mr. McKen- na’s formal education as a counselor and physical education teacher. It is there where he received his degree in the latter, and furthered his education by acquiring a Masters in Social Studies at the New York University. A career as a guidance counselor was not prompted until additional courses in Social Studies were followed at Hartford University and Southern Connecti- cut State College. Nineteen hundred forty-seven was a big year, for it marked the beginning of a long and rewarding career as both a sports director and guidance counselor. His early teaching profession first took place in the elemen- tary grades and also as a part time physical education teacher at Wilby. But it was not until 1950 that the teaching of sports became a full time job. These early endeavors had their beginnings at Wilby, where they have prospered and grown for the past fifteen years. The next three years saw Mr. McKenna as coach of the Wilby football team, while the following six years were spent as an energetic basketball coach. He holds an extra-special rememberance for the 1952-1953 bas- ketball team. It was their hard work and diligence which won them the state championship. In 1964. he served as physical education supervisor for the city of Water- bury. Due to the lack of association with the boys and girls in this position, he left it after three years to come back to Wilbv as a physical education teacher. Guid- ance years at Wilby extended from 1959 to 1964. He is presently a counselor for a number of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. Mr. McKenna lives happily with his four children and his wife, Ellen, who teaches part time at Notre Dame Academy. Working at a summer camp, officiat- ing and broadcasting high school and college basketball games, and scouting part time for the Baltimore Orioles baseball organization are among Mr. McKenna’s other interests. After he retires from teaching, Mr. McKenna would like to become a full time scout for the Baltimore Orioles. Mr. McKenna’s long affiliation with the Wilby faculty has made him a familiar face to teacher and student alike. Although his many years have been devoted to the preparation of young adults for college, his interest in extra-curricular activities is indeed a symbol of the intense interest which he holds for the youth of today. For these reasons, the Class of 1970 salutes Mr. John McKenna.
