WE CAME TO AND MR. JOHN McKENNA Arnold College was the starting point of Mr. McKen- na’s formal education as a counselor and physical education teacher. It is there where he received his degree in the latter, and furthered his education by acquiring a Masters in Social Studies at the New York University. A career as a guidance counselor was not prompted until additional courses in Social Studies were followed at Hartford University and Southern Connecti- cut State College. Nineteen hundred forty-seven was a big year, for it marked the beginning of a long and rewarding career as both a sports director and guidance counselor. His early teaching profession first took place in the elemen- tary grades and also as a part time physical education teacher at Wilby. But it was not until 1950 that the teaching of sports became a full time job. These early endeavors had their beginnings at Wilby, where they have prospered and grown for the past fifteen years. The next three years saw Mr. McKenna as coach of the Wilby football team, while the following six years were spent as an energetic basketball coach. He holds an extra-special rememberance for the 1952-1953 bas- ketball team. It was their hard work and diligence which won them the state championship. In 1964. he served as physical education supervisor for the city of Water- bury. Due to the lack of association with the boys and girls in this position, he left it after three years to come back to Wilbv as a physical education teacher. Guid- ance years at Wilby extended from 1959 to 1964. He is presently a counselor for a number of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. Mr. McKenna lives happily with his four children and his wife, Ellen, who teaches part time at Notre Dame Academy. Working at a summer camp, officiat- ing and broadcasting high school and college basketball games, and scouting part time for the Baltimore Orioles baseball organization are among Mr. McKenna’s other interests. After he retires from teaching, Mr. McKenna would like to become a full time scout for the Baltimore Orioles. Mr. McKenna’s long affiliation with the Wilby faculty has made him a familiar face to teacher and student alike. Although his many years have been devoted to the preparation of young adults for college, his interest in extra-curricular activities is indeed a symbol of the intense interest which he holds for the youth of today. For these reasons, the Class of 1970 salutes Mr. John McKenna. His.dedication and unselfish sacrifices have been responsible for many improvements which have developed in our school system. After receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Boston University and Master’s degree at Yale, he began his active role in education. Being an alumnus of Wilby, he felt that this would be the ideal place to fulfill his lifetime ambition. We, the Class of 1970, wish to thank Mr. Membrino for all he has done to guide us in our educational pursuits and wish him great success in the future. VICE PRINCIPALS MR. DOMENIC COVIELLO Mr. Domenic Covicllo was born and raised in Waterbury. He received his primary education at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He then went on to the University of Hartford, where he received his Masters De- gree. Mr. Covicllo was an instructor in Mathematics at UConn for two years. For the past four years Mr. Covicllo has been a guidance counselor at Wilby. He became Vice-Principal this year through the Civil Service Commission. We, the Class of ’70, wish him well in his new position. He is an asset to the school. MR. PHILIP LBONARDI Mr. Philip Leonardi, a native of Water- bury, graduated from Sacred Heart High School. He then attended Providence Col- lege. From there he went on to the Univer- sity of Hartford where he received his Mas- ters Degree. He has participated in Institutes of Italian at Central Connecticut, and a member of Afro-American studies group at Cornell University. In 1966-67 he received a fellowship in Italian at the University of Catania. He was then granted a sabbatical leave from Waterbury. The Wildcats of 1969 brought to Wilby a winning season, boasting a record of 5-4. Those who are familiar with the team’s background will agree that this was certainly an unexpected, al- though pleasant surprise, since the record stood at a dismal 1-4 after the first five games. Yet a strong desire among the players combined with a loyal student body helped the Wildcats to win their next four games in a convincing manner. Throughout the first five games, Wilby’s opponents outscored them 97-58. In the last four games, the boys of O’Brien outscored their rivals 132-33. The 'Cats had become a team to beware of. The team's co-captains, Jim Battistrada and Tony Ramonas, led the Wildcats in their best performances in the last two games. Traveling to New Haven, everyone expected the ’Cats to be anni- hilated with the exception of the team itself. They had, at last, realized their potential by defeating the powerful Hillhouse, 34-15. This was all the incentive needed by the team as they prepared for their final game against their greatest rival. Sacred Heart, a ball club which Wilby had not beaten in years. The Wildcats were well rewarded by clawing the Hearts, 46-0. This game will live in the memory of all seniors. At the close of each season, certain awards are given to the members of the team who showed outstanding merit during the year. They are as follows: TONY RAMONAS: All-City. All-Valley, Most Valuable Player (team). Outstanding lineman (team), Co-Captain-Tackle. JIM BATTISTRADA: All-City, All-Valley, Outstanding Back (team), Co-Captain-Quarterback. CARMEN ROSA: All Citv, Unsung Lineman (team), Tackle. LEMARK HENDERSON: All-Vallcv, Defensive Player (team). Linebacker. CHUCK BEAUDOIN: Unsung Back (team). Fullback. MIKE McKEEMAN: Civitan Award End, Halfback. The 1969 football team of Wilby High School would like to express their sincere appreciation to Coach O’Brien. BASKETBALL SEASON RECORD The Wilby Basketball Team of 1970 compiled a record of 8-11. This compared to the record of the preceding year (3-16) is a vast improvement. Contributing to this change were All-City, All- Valley choices, Tom Weaver and Larry Chapman. Also having major roles in the team’s play were Tom Dupont, John Greco and Bill Murphy. Other players seeing action throughout the year were, Fred Palomba, Bill Mikolsky, Joe Atkins, Jim Battistrada, Barry Sullivan, Tony Ramonas, Thur- mann Arline, John Wesley, Earl Hunter and Charles Lee. Had fate been different our season’s record could have been much different. In a matter of three close games, the record could have been reversed. Also, the good games must be consid- ered, especially the Pulaski game. One of the Wilby players, Fred Palomba was honored by receiving the Jack Cullinan Award. It is awarded to the player who showed outstand- ing sportsmanship throughout the year. The team was begun last year by Miss Marguerite Montvill. Since the team was newly organized and since few of these girls had formally played bas- ketball, most of their time was spent learning the rules and basic skills and plays used in basketball. However, last year most of the girls were seniors who graduated last June; therefore, the team had to start from scratch again, this time under the direction of the new physical education teacher and coach, Miss Judith Carlson. Many new rules were also added, the major one being the change from a six-man to a five-man team. The starting team was Captain Gerry Booker, Saundra Hunter, Bernadette Dclauri, Pat Lanoue, and Vanessa Gat- ling. These girls along with the rest of the team did a very good job, considering their inexperi- ence in basketball, and also their lack of any sup- port whatsoever from the student body. Although they lost their three games, two against Notre Dame, and one against Watertown these games were not easy wins for the opponents. Much credit should be given to these girls and especially their coaches for their effort and interest in adding new opportunities for girls in the area of athletics. There has never been much offered in this area for girls in the public high schools in Watcrbury. Hopefully, in the next few years, the other two area high schools, will also organize basketball teams for girls, and girls bas- ketball may become just as popular in the future as boys basketball is now. SWIMMING Finishing with a season's record of five wins and seven losses, Coach Fossbender and the team were pleased with their season. Lacking in depth, Mr. Fossbender, in his first year as head coach, often had to rely on double wins from Mike Verno, George Gaylord, Bob McKee, and Terry Ryan. New school records were set this year by Mike Verno in the 200 yard individual medlay, George Gay- lord in the 400 yard freestyle, and Terry Ryan in the 100 yard breast stroke. The Wildcats performed admirably in the state meet finishing fifth out of a field of nineteen teams. The medlay relay team of Chris Bolan, Terry Ryan, Gerry LeBel, and Bob McKee garnered a fourth place. Other standouts were Mike Verno with a fourth place in the 100 yard butterfly; Bob McKee with fifth place in the 50 yard freestvle; Charlie Beaudoin with a fifth place in diving; George Gaylord with a seventh place in 400 yard freestyle. Terry Ryan and Hank Becker finished seventh and eighth respectively in the 100 yard breast stroke. The 400 yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Allan Russo, Marty Morrissey, Gerry Le- Bel, and Dave Plumb earned a seventh place. Bill Matzkevich, Coach M. Ciarlo. BASEBALL Tri-Captains Mike McKeeman, Paul Sirois, John Hamilton Coach Mario Ciarlo looked at our baseball season as a rebuilding year. Faced with the loss of all NVL pitcher Lenny Samcla, and all NVL outfielder Jim Monroe, as well as catcher Bob Rinaldi and an all senior infield, the Wildcats and coach Ciarlo knew they had a lot of work ahead of them. These factors attributed to our rather poor 3-15 record. Coach Ciarlo relied for the most part on his senior tri-captains Mike McKeeman, John Hamilton and Paul Sirois. Mike showed some good pitching, especially against Nau- gatuck, the state champs. He hurled a three hitter, but none the less Wilby was defeated 5-2 because of fielding errors. John Hamilton was the pitching ace for the team, he also contributed greatly by making some fine plays at short. Paul Sirois, twice NVL selection, carried the big bat for Wilby, hitting .434 junior year and .386 senior year. Also junior John Greco aided the Wildcats with his .391 average and 26 stolen bases. Coach Ciarlo is now looking forward to a fine team for ’71. Left to Right — Carmen Rosa, Lemark Henderson, Fred Strumpf, Tad Ryback, Tony Ramonas, Jim Battistrada, Bob Graham, Ken Epstein, Earl Hunter, Larry Barnes, Hiram Hall, Mike Lugavskas, Bill Ryback, TRACK For the first time in the brief history of Wilby’s track team, we ended the season with a winning record. The final record was four, three, and one. Also for the first time this year, Wilby defeated Sacred Heart in track. It has been very hard for the members of the track team to im- prove themselves, because there were no experienced players to teach them. This year the seniors reached their full potential through their own diligent work through- out the past four years. In track the leaders were Fred Strumpf, Lemark Hen- derson, Morse Solomon, Lew Semprini, Hiram Hall, jnd Tad Ryback. The leaders in the field events were; Ken Ep- stein, Jim Battistrada, Tony Ramonas, Bob Graham, Fred Strumpf, Lemark Henderson, and Bill Chocrane. Records were set this year in three events, the 880 relay, the javelin and the discus. 79 Left to Right: Coach O’Brien, Co-captain Lemark Henderson, Co-captain Fred Strumpf, and Coach Cipriano. Left to Right: Coach Warren Henderson, Elliot Androphy, Bob Heald, Jon Birenbaum, Kathy Karmen, Pat Lanoue, Kathy Woitke, Mary Reale, Stan Juda, Joel Androphy, Bob Kerzner. TENNIS The boys and girls tennis teams both had successful seasons this year, under the leadership of their new coach Warren Henderson. The boys’ record in local com- petition was six wins and one loss. Also added to this year’s record was an out- standing Cheshire club who defeated Wilby twice. The victories included two wins over Holy Cross, two wins over Crosby and one win over Kennedy. In the first meeting of the year Kennedy upset Wilby 5-4. We also defeated Naugatuck in our first meeting with them. The second match was cancelled in the middle because of rain. The outcome of that match was to decide the NVL, it could not be made up however, so it was deemed a tie. The girls this year unfortunately did not have as successful a year finishing with a 1-5-1 record. This was due to the loss of all our experienced players last year. The only true veteran on this year’s squad was captain Mary Reale. The girls’ one win came against Kennedy, with double losses at the hands of Watertown and Plainville. The tie came at the Woodbury meeting. 81 Captain — Boys ROBERT KERZNER Captain — Girls MARY REALE Coach Cicchetti Mario Silva Ken Mulvey G O L F Edward Silva John Putetti Bil Murphy Wilby’s golf team finished the season with a record of three wins and twelve defeats. The wins included two over Ansonia and one over Crosby. This record does not show the true merits of the team, because the competition this year was very demanding. There were three instances where one stroke could have meant a Wilby victory. Bill Murphy was the team’s number one player as well as the captain of the team. Tom Dorso played the number two position, giving Wilby a formidable one two combination. Rounding out the varsity squad were Ken Mulvey, John Putetti, and Ed Silva. 83 84 PAT LANOUE DENISE MARCELLA MARGOT RODNEY CHRIS MACKIE CAROL R1MANY DIANE THOMPSON ELAINE LORUSSO LORRAINE BRANDOLINI PHIL ENSERO CHEERLEADERS Co-Captains and Advisor 69-70 was considered a very good year for the cheerleaders under the direction of their advisor Miss Judy Carlson, and their Co-Captains Carol Rimany and Diane Thompson. The girls worked hard all dur- ing the summer not only practicing but rais- ing money for their attractive new football uniforms. Once school started the cheer- leaders were in the swing, sponsoring invig- orating football rallies and cheering their team onto numerous victories. Never to be forgotten were the good times coming home with the players on the bus. Along with the change of season came the change of sport. Basketball proved to be an exciting season and to add to the enthusiasm of the game were large signs behind the fans. The cheerleaders then ended a profit- able year that contributed much to the sport’s life of the school. 85 Front Row; Left to Right; Diane Thompson, Carol Ri- many. THE CLASS OF ’70 CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR Anticipation and excitement marked us as un- suspecting freshmen. We floundered about the wide halls and finally discovered what we later learned was assembly hall. The following day, we gropingly began our career in Wilby by peering at the room numbers. Upper classmen pounced on us with shining offers to sell us tickets for the elevator. Some of the lazier and more gullible members of our class were “bulldozed” into this proposition. For the first three months, teachers and upper class- men gazed condescendingly and pityingly on our stilted efforts to act as if we belonged. After that, we were merely ignored. We were the lucky ones. With our entrance into high school, the school day was lengthened one-half hour. Instead of being dismissed at 1:30 P.M. as in previous years, we were privileged to stay until 2 o’clock. On the athletic front, the Wilby Football Team, unfortunately, experienced a dismal season, recording one win and seven losses. Our basketball Team, however, experienced a season of alternate successes and defeats, winning 12 games and losing 6, which qualified Wilby for the State Cl AC Basketball Tournament. In this tourna- ment, our first opponent was East Catholic, the third ranking team in the state. Our boys now had a chance to show off their outstanding abilities and they de- feated East Catholic 66-63. We then gave up our place in the tourney to the Torrington Raiders with an 81-76 upset. Our swimming team was its usual well-balanced self and submerged all opposition excepting the Mil- ford, Torrington, Kennedy, and Crosby swimmers. The Wilby Baseball Team, who for their ability had only a mediocre season with a 7 and 7 record, were led by such able leaders as Lcn Samela, Russ Petti- nichi, and Bob Faber. Journalistically speaking, some of our more literary members interested themselves in the Emerald and the Press Club and have since risen to prominence in these organizations. Many of our potential musicians furthered their careers by joining the band, and they aided consider- ably in maintaining its excellent standards. A year chock-full of new interests! We felt awe- stricken at first, but now we’re troopers preparing to take a second big step. Freshmen beware!! We’re sophomores now . SOPHOMORE YEAR Returning to Wilby for our second year we quickly reunited ourselves with our friends, and hoped for a successful sports season. We were rewarded in all sports. In football we won the annual Jamboree and finished with a 5-3 record. In basketball our talented team won both the City and NVL titles and placed third in the State championship. Our swimming team was also able to boast of a third place award in the NVL meet. However the year was not known for only happy memories for we were saddened by the untimely deaths of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The Student Body of Wilby was invited to attend a solemn high mass at St. Margaret Church as a mem- orial to Dr. King. At the culmination of the year we ordered our class rings and eagerly awaited the day that we would return to Wilby as upperclassmen. JUNIOR YEAR In September, we returned to the familiar sur- roundings of Wilby, ready to take on our new roles as upperclassmen. Soon campaign posters filled the halls, and after an exciting week of campaigning, we elected our Junior Class Officers: Lewis Semprini. President; Deborah D'Agostino, Vice-President; Terry Ryan. Treasurer; and Joanne Labonte, Secretary. The introduction of a new Negro History course to the regular United States History course caused a massive student protest in the form of a walkout. An active Student Council was then organized in each of the city high schools. Its purpose was to promote better understanding between the studen' body and the administration, and give students a greater voice in school policies. Wilby’s Studen' Council included Morris Bilanceri. President; Janice Johnson. Vice-President; Ellen Burke, Secretary; and Lewis Semprini, Treasurer. One of the most noteworthy projects undertaken by the Student Council was the Biafra Relief Drive. A sum of $300 was collected in only two days. Early in the year, the entire Wilby population was saddened by the news of the near tragic automobile accident of Mr. William Tracy. We were all very happy and thankful to see him return in June. During the fall we received an unexpected three- day vacation while the city teachers went on strike. We enjoyed another three days just before Christmas vacation because of a flu epidemic. Through the combined effort of the three Student Councils in Waterbury, the First Annual Tri-Council Winter Carnival was a tremendous success. The three- day affair began on Friday with a concert at Kennedy High School Auditorium featuring B. J. Thomas, the Electric Elves, and Jefferson Square. Saturday night's entertainment was in the form of a dance at Kennedy High School with music provided by the Foam. A 129 semi-formal affair at the Castilian Room, including a buffet dinner with dancing afterwards to the music of the Wool, topped off a fabulous weekend on Sunday night. Wilby really took on the appearance of a bit of Las Vegas on the night of Casino Royale. The teachers’ cafe was filled with a multitude of gambling entertainment. Dancing in the gym to the music of the Power was also the order of the night. The Junior Prom was held at the Colonial Club on May 29. The theme, Scarborough Fair, with enter- tainment by U. S. 69, is sure to bring back many fond memories to all those who attended. Final exams terminated the year and we began to anticipate our final year at Wilby. SENIOR YEAR Roll out the red carpet! Our class has become the famed upperclassmen of Wilby High School, the envy of all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. After we became acquainted with our new teachers and classes, then came the excitement of the election of class officers. When the time came for the counting of ballots, we waited anxiously for the results. When the results were announced, we knew that we had chosen qualified and able candidates. Our President was Lew Scmprini, our Vice-President was Jim Batti- strada, our Secretary was Elaine LoRusso, and our Treasurer was Jack Demick. Soon after this, our interests turned to sports. Our football, basketball, and baseball teams were always striving for a victory. Although we did not win all the games, our teams never lost their good sportsmanship. During the first half of the year, our yearbook, under editorship of Bob Kerzner, Jim Battistrada, and George Gaylord, became a favorite topic of con- versation. There was some very familiar whispering in Wilby, such as, “Which pose do you like best?”. Yes, it was our proofs, being passed from desk to desk to get the approval of our classmates. After this our thoughts were quickly turned to the talk of our class superlatives and favorites. Our senior class officers did indeed prove to be very capable by presenting us with many activities. Under the leadership of Mr. Gerald Dandonoli and Miss Melba Membrino, the first big event of the year was the Homecoming Dance held in the beautifully decorated Wilby gym on November 15th. Music was by the “Free Will” and everyone agreed that the dance was a social, as well as a financial success. The next big senior happening was the “Snowball”. Held at Armond’s Restaurant on Strait’s Turnpike, this semi-formal sit-down dinner dance began at 8 P.M. and ended at 1 P.M. (to the dismay of those who attended). In order to defray the cost of the Senior Prom tickets, the officers thought of many ways to raise money. A very successful casual day took place in the earlier part of the year. On March 7th, a success- ful cake sale was held at Bradlee’s and at Stop ’n Shop. Then on March 21st, many seniors attended a “Spring Splash” in the Kennedy High pool. Another big event around this time was Wilby’s participation in the WPOP School Spirit Petition Con- test. Led by Mr. West, the whole school went into an uproar signing petitions in order to attain the most names, and thereby receive a $2000 movie studio, which would be installed in the school. Although Wilby only took fourth place, we feel that this en- deavor was greatly worthwhile because, in addition to being fun, it promoted much school spirit. Shortly after this the new dress code was instituted in Wilby. For the first time in our four years of high school ties and jackets were no longer required. The attention of the senior class was now turned to the presentation of the class play, “Wildcat”. This musical comedy which first appeared on Broadway starring Lucille Ball was directed by Miss Moritis with Francis Green and Diane Dinklocker assisting with the choreography. After a week of tryouts, the cast was picked. Diane Thompson was to play Wild- cat, and Terry Ryan would be Joe Dynamite. There was a total of about forty seniors in the play, working either as actors, singers, or dancers. On the evenings of May 22 and 23, all who attended the performance were able to see that many long hours of work had been put into this production, making it the huge success that it was. After this, time started to fly. We soon found our- selves getting measured for our caps and gowns, and club pictures. Then we found ourselves looking excit- ingly toward our Senior Prom and Graduation. The night to which we all looked forward to finally came on June 13th, our Senior Prom. The prom was held at the Park Plaza Hotel in New Haven. Music was by the “Climax” and the theme was “You Made Me So Very Happy”. This was a night that all of us will not forget for a long time. The boys were very dignified in their tuxedoes, and the girls were ex- quisitely dressed in their beautiful gowns. All of this combined with the wonderful atmosphere of the Park Plaza to make our prom an event to be long remembered. We looked forward with anticipation to that won- derful but sad point in our lives, Graduation Night. June 25th will also be another milestone in our lives to be long remembered, for this night marked the end of our high school years and the beginning of a new life. This graduation was especially a memor- abe one because it was the first time in the history of Waterbury that a class held its commencement exer- cises outside in Library Park. What a grand sight it must have been to see two hundred and eight-four graduates in procession from Wilby to Library Park! There was pride and joy in the misty eyes of our parents as they, waiting for our names to be called for the presentation of our diplomas, sat patiently in the beautiful park. We ourselves felt a little misty eyed as we sat in our seats remembering the many wonderful experiences that we shared together through our four years. As we walked down the aisle for our diploma, many of us asked ourselves, “Is this really happening to me?” Yes, it was, and we soon realized that four great years of our life were gone for ever. ir Jk MAKE MINE A DOUBLE!
