MR. JOSEPH ANTHONY Dedication The Class of 1969 wishes to dedicate this yearbook to the very dedicated Science Department Head, Mr. Joseph Anthony. He is not only a devoted teacher but also a good friend to all Wilby students. As a native of Waterbury, Mr. Anthony attended Crosby High School and later re- ceived his Bachelor of Arts degree at St. John's College in Maryland. He received his Masters from the University of Michigan. After beginning his career at Jordon College in Michigan, Mr. Anthony came to Wilby where he has been teaching all sciences except physics for twenty-nine years. He has also taught zoology part time at the University of Connecticut, Waterbury Branch. He is presently teaching at Mattatuck Community Col- lege, as a part-time instructor. Mr. Anthony is married, with four children and twelve grandchildren. Traveling is his favorite pastime and he has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States. His most recent trip was to Greece and Yugoslavia this past summer. In addition to teaching and traveling, Mr. Anthony raises flowers and does a little carpentry. After twenty-nine years of dedicated service, Mr. Anthony is retiring from the Water- bury School System and is going to teach at Mattatuck Community College. We, the Class of 69”, wish to thank Mr. Anthony for his guidance and service through the years and we wish him success and happiness in the future. 3 MR. JOSEPH MEMBRINO Principal Mr. Membrino has devoted the past forty-three years of his life to the education of the high school students of Waterbury. His dedication and unselfish sacrifices have been responsible for many improvements which have developed in our school system. After receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Boston University and Master’s Degree at Yale, he began his active role in education. Being an alumnus of Wilby, he felt that this would be the ideal place to begin his lifetime ambition. We, the Class of 1969 wish to thank Mr. Membrino for all he has done to guide us in our edu- cational pursuits and wish him success in the future. 4 MR. THEODORE DONAHUE Vice-Principal Mr. Donahue has been more than the Vice-Principal of Wilby to the Class of 69”. He has also been a friend and a person very much interested in each and every student. His face is familiar not only in the halls of Wilby but also at many extra-curricular events. Many a student has been and will be guided to the path of becoming a good and responsible adult with his aid and understanding. As a native of Waterbury, Mr. Donahue attended Sacred Heart High School. Follow- ing graduation, he attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and later joined the Medical Service Corp of the Army where he was stationed in Korea and Japan. He later attended Fairfield University and received his Masters and also an Advanced Cer- tificate. He has taken post graduate courses at Southern Connecticut State College and Western Connecticut State College. In 1955, Mr. Donahue began his teaching career at Driggs Grammar School where he taught for two years. He then came to Wilby and taught English I, II and III and also History, until March 20, 1967 when he succeeded the late Mr. Ambrose Egan as the Vice-Principal of our school. 1 am very much impressed with the Class of 69”, most especially by the seniors who have demonstrated so much leadership on the Student Council, which has given a real lift to the school spirit. And I feel that most seniors will do very well after graduation”, said Mr. Donahue. Thank you, Mr. Donahue, for your help and kindness throughout the past years. The class of 69” wishes you every happiness and success in the future. MR. JOHN DELANEY MR. FOOTBALL The Wilby High School football team concluded a very successful season on November 28, Thanks- giving Day, before a crowd of 4,000 at Municipal Stadium. The team was led by Co-captains Jim Little and Len Samela who were both among the top ten scorers in the Naugatuck Valley League. The team was made up of many talented and experienced indi- viduals who were the nucleus of a very fine baliclub. Two of the Wildcat's finest performances were against non-league opponents. One, a 20-20 tie with an undefeated Ridgefield team, showed the courage the team had—to come from behind with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The other, a 38-6 win over Immaculate Conception of Danbury, proved the over-all strength of the Wilby offense and defense. These games will remain among the most exciting memories of the 1968 football season. At the close of the season, some of the boys re- ceived special awards. They are as follows: Jim Little: All-City, All-Valley, Most Valuable Player (Wilby), Outstanding Back (Wilby), 1st An- nual James Lee Award (Most Valuable Player in the NVL). Tom Fonti: All-City, All-Valley, Best Defensive Player (Wilby), Civitan Sportsman Award. Len Samela: All-City, Most Valuable Player (Wilby). Ted Korotie: All-City, All-Valley. The 1968 version of the Wilby High football team would like to take this opportunity to wish Coach O'Brien and the Cats of '69 the best of luck next season. 72 Season Record WE THEY Forfeit Win Watertown Ridgefield Torrington Naugatuck Kennedy Immaculate Conception Kolbe Sacred Heart Samela unloads. BASKETBALL Coach Jack Delaney looked to our basketball sea- son as a rebuilding year. Faced with the loss of all but one of the starting five including All-Stater Art Williams, Coach Delaney and his cagers had a lot of hard work ahead of them. He placed his hopes for a successful campaign in co-captains Dave White and Jamie Corkindale. Corkindale’s outstanding ef- fort of the season was a 28 point output against Sacred Heart. Delaney also looked to Julius Harrison and Ken Gatling, two former junior varsity players. Under the guiding hand of Coach Delaney, the Wildcats were made into a sound offensive unit. Due to a lack of experience the Cats suffered several overtime defeats. In the first four contests Wilby suffered defeats but only after the opposing team felt their claws. Wilby picked up its first victory against Kennedy 67-62. Harrison carried a high of 31 points. After losing to Crosby, the Cats had one of their best games of the season before falling to Watertown 66-63 in double overtime. After an exciting win over Tor- rington, Wilby dropped its next five games, some of which were heartbreakers. Wilby rebounded by over- taking Kennedy 72-66 in double overtime. Senior Ken Gatling sparked the Cats with 27 points. How- ever, Wilby saw no more victories in their last five games. Wilby managed to place Julius Harrison, a Senior center, on the All-City first team and the All-Valley second team. His superb all around play helped him win these honors. Throughout the season, the spirited Wildcats showed aggressiveness and untiring hustle until the final buzzer. With the loss of four starting seniors, Coach De- laney will again have to look to his junior varsity to find a winning combination for next year. The class of '69 wishes Coach Delaney and the Wilby Cagers every success for victorious seasons in the years to come. 77 SCORES THEY Pulaski East Catholic Immaculate Conception Sacred Heart Kennedy Crosby Watertown Torrington Torrington Ansonia Watertown Immaculate Conception Naugatuck Kennedy Sacred Heart Ansonia Naugatuck Bristol Eastern Crosby John goes for the bucket. Our team did fairly well in its first season and finished their campaign with a 3-5 record. Offensive leaders were Cindy Clemente and Carole Lamontagne while the rebounding chores were ably handled by Sue Boulanger, Pat Lanoue and Lorraine Saunders. The playmakers of the team were Gerry Booker and Robin Joseph, who also lent valuable offensive assistance. The team was ably coached and supervised by Miss Marguerite Montvill. Seniors on the team were Linda Delfino, Robin Joseph, Carole Lamontagne and Lorraine Saunders. SWIMMING The 1968-69 Wilby Swim Team had another re- markable year, tallying a 9-5 won lost record in dual meet competition. In the N.V.L. meet, Wilby was not so successful, placing fourth, bowing to the pow- erhouses Naugatuck, Crosby and Kennedy. Compiling 94 points, Wilby ranked fifth in the C.I.A.C Class L state meet. Gil Cyr was the only gold medal winner for Wilby with the astonishing total of 379.9 points. The medley relay team of Karmen, Ryan, Verno, and Orkin placed second with a would be” school record time 1:49.9. Because of the limited depth, Coach Genova had to depend on double winner performances from mem- bers of his varsity squad. Co-captain Zach Karmen, Terry Ryan, and Mickey Verno of the first relay team, frequently took the first relay along with their indi- vidual events. Junior George Gaylord often took both the 200 and the grueling 400 yard freestyle with Co-captain Mitch Orkin often dominating the 50 and the 100 free style. Rick Mastroianni, senior, was the anchor man for both relays, due to perfectly timed starts. The future looks bright for Coach Genova's tank- ers. Returning juniors include: Terry Ryan, George Gaylord, Charles Beaudoin. Hank Becker and Fred Gilden. Sophomores Gil Cyr (currently holding the school, pool and N.V.L. records in diving), and Mickey Verno will be invaluable assets to the team next year and the year after. BASEBALL The Wilby High School baseball team, under first-year coach Mario Ciarlo, completed a very successful season Wed. May 28, with a very impressive victory over Immaculate Conception of Danbury. After a very slow start the Wildcats gained momentum and at one point had a 7 game winning streak and finished with a 11-6 won-lost record. Leading hitter Paul Sirois, a senior, was injured midway through the season but still managed to maintain a .434 batting average. He was followed by Senior Jim Monroe who finished with a .371 average. Sophomore pitcher Mike Verno showed much promise as he completed the season with a 2-0 record. Co-Capts. Bob Rinaldi and Len Samela contributed greatly to the Cats offensive power as they hit .302 and .315 re- spectively. Even after regular season play was completed the Wildcat 9 hoped to make the tournament and hoped to play more baseball under the Wilby name. When the bids were finally counted the Cats were 17th but only the top 16 teams were taken. This was a great let down for the fine Wilby ball club. However, the season was not a total disappointment. Wilby tied for first place in the city and tied for second place in the Naugatuck Valley. Just as proof of the talent which the Wilby ball club had they placed three members on the All-Valley first team and two members received honorable mention. Jim Monroe, Len Samela and Paul Sirois made the first team while Bob Rinaldi and freshman Howie Land received honorable mention. With some fine ballplayers returning, Coach Ciarlo should again turn out an outstanding team next year. The Wildcat 9” of '69 wishes the best of luck to Mr. Ciarlo and the Cats of '70. This year the cheerleaders’ attire was slightly modified. Bright green and white pleated culotte dresses were worn by the girls. The cheerleaders practiced faithfully through- out the summer to the end of basketball season and returned to achieve perfection out on the floor. Now that the year has ended they send their best of luck to the new co-captains, Carol Rimany and Diane Thompson. Also gratitude goes out to Mr. West who formed a Pep Club at Wilby that displayed school spirit at its best. 102 YEARBOOK OFFICERS Left to Right: Linda Ditoto secretary, Robert Brown president, Ann Garafola vice-president, Nancy Coatta artist. 103 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 1st row, left to right: Ronald Androphy, Ann Marie Garafola, Lenny Samela. 2nd row: Lynn Sil- verman, Richard Charpie, Helen Krawczyk, Evelyn Klein. 3rd row: Robin Wagge, Dave Rinaldi, Robert Solomon. 4th row: Mr. Dubuque, advisor; Carolyn Robins, John D Amelia, Vickie Orsini, Hugh Smolin, William Bouteiller. IN WITNESS WHF.RF.OF, We have hereunto set our hands and seals at Water- bury, Connecticut, this twenty-fourth of June in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-nine. signed, The Class of 69 153 FRESHMAN YEAR (1965-1966) How bewildered we were on the opening day of school! The first problem con- fronting us was that of finding the auditorium, where we were to receive our schedules. On the following day as we searched for our classes we were lost in the maze of halls. Some of us found ourselves in the wrong class and hurried on to the right room, but we wisely concluded that this was a problem confronting all freshmen. As the year progressed, new acquaintances were formed. With our friends we eagerly awaited the Friday night socials at Driggs Grammar School. Due to the new Kennedy High School, many of our enthusiastic rooters were trans- ferred from Wilby. When we met Kennedy in a football game the Wilby seniors were very happy that we beat them, and their enthusiasm spread to us. The basketball team did not have a triumphant season, but the games were spiritedly attended. The swimming team had a successful year, closing their season with a 7-4 record. The first election we participated in at Wilby was the one in which we selected our Student Council members. They were Martha Benson, Nick Gugliotti, and Len Samela. This was the first year that D.E.C.A. was included in the Wilby school system. The Distributive Education Clubs of America is a program which provides the student with invaluable experience and knowledge concerning marketing, merchandising, and management. As the end of the year approached so did our first final exams. Our teachers had assured us that they would not be difficult, but it wasn't until afterwards that we realized their assurances were well-founded. Now we look back on our freshman year as a certain memorable yesterday. SOPHOMORE YEAR (1966-1967) After spending a restful summer, we returned to Wilby's familiar surroundings. As sophomores, we had to adjust to a longer school day and the new requirement of taking five major subjects. This year our language department received as an exchange teacher. Dr. Vincent Mancuso, from Palermo, Sicily. He assumed Mr. Philip Leonardi’s position of teaching Latin and Italian. With the close of a rather trying football season, we focused our attention on winter sports. Our basketball team had victories over Naugatuck and Torrington. The Wildcats were also impressive in their defeat of Kennedy. They even reached the semi-finals of the C1AC tournament. The Wilby baseball ream ended its season with a record of eight wins and seven losses. Our golf team also had a fine season with a six and five record. The teams made us proud of the green and white, and kept up Wilby's spirit. Mr. Ambrose G. Egan, vice-principal of Wilby for twenty-two years, retired March 17 after having been at Wilby for forty years. Mr. Egan, who was very devoted to Wilby, directed many class plays. He was succeeded by Mr. Theodore Donahue. A big highlight of the year was the ordering of class rings in May. The rings are gold with a dark green emerald cut stone. Set against a black background, on one side is the Wildcat emblem and the year 1969; on the other side is a replica of Wilby's front entrance. We looked forward to receiving our rings in the fall. The end of our exams marked the half-way point in our high school career. JUNIOR YEAR (1967-1968) Upper classmen, at last! And soon the sounds of, Turn my ring! Turn my ring! resounded throughout the halls. Our rings were a symbol of our status as juniors, and we tried our hardest to show them off. Colorful posters decorated the hallways and the managers distributed their candidate's badges. After an exciting campaign, we elected as President, Len Samela; Vice-President, Nick Gugliotti; Secretary, Linda Lanese; and Treasurer, Donna Guerrera. The Wilby Wildcats got off to a good start by defeating Crosby 8-0 and Kennedy 16-8 in the football jamboree. Then we cheered our team on to four straight victories. Our school spirit was demonstrated by a large attendance at the Sacred Heart game, which was played in the rain. We were gifted with a talented basketball team, which after a great season, captured the City and N.V.L. titles, and placed third in the state championship. Our swimming team had a most successful season as well; it finished a strong third in the N.V.L. J54 Swimming Meet. After a wonderful showing in the semi-finals, the Cats finished second in the forty-second annual C.I.A.C. L-Divisional Championship. Certain members of our class, who had maintained an above-ninety average for their first three years, were inducted into the National Honor Society at a school assembly. Dedication and hard work made the fiftieth anniversary issue of the Wilby Literary Annual one of the finest publications to be written and published by Wilby students. We were given an unexpected vacation when the city teachers went on strike. But, much to our chagrin, it was soon over. Our school was greatly saddened by the untimely deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The student body of Wilby was invited to attend a solemn high mass at St. Margaret's Church, as a memorial to Dr. King. On the night of May 31, the Junior Prom was held at the Colonial Club in Oxford. The theme was Spring in the Air , and the song was When You're Young and In Love . The Downbeats supplied the music. The prom committees, along with rhc-ir advisors, Mr. Tracy and Mr. Wise, provided a wonderful evening for all. Our junior year drew to a close, and we eagerly looked forward to our last year at Wilby. SENIOR YEAR 1968-1969) Back for the final time! Being the leaders of Wilby, we had many new experiences. These included casual day, camera day, exchanging class pictures, and working on our yearbook. At the start of our last year, there was an unexpected walkout. This action was inspired when Negro history was included in all social studies courses. A partial result of the walkout was the institution of a newly organized Student Council in the three city high school. For the voting, all students at Wilby were allowed to make their choice democratically by using voting machines. Results after a long campaign and an extremely spirited rally were: Morris Bilanceri, President; Janice Johnson, Vice-President; Ellen Burke, Secretary; and Lewis Semprini, Treasurer. One of Wilby's finest accomplishments this year was the Biafra Relief Drive. The effort began with a group of interested students who collected S300 in two days. Wilby students were pleasantly surprised to get a three-day vacation in the fall when the teachers decided to go on strike. We received another unexpected three-day vacation before Christmas during the flu epidmic. Senior class officers were elected in January. The final results were: Len Samela, President; Nick Gugliotti, Vice-President, Connie Rinaldi, Secretary; and Rich DiChiara, Treasurer. Tragic news which saddened the entire Wilby population was the almost fatal accident of Mr. William Tracy. Sadness turned to joy when we saw Mr. Tracy walking the halls of Wilby again in June. One of the major projects of the new Student Council was the First Annual Tri- Council Winter Carnival. This was a three night event beginning with a concert on Friday night, featuring B. J. Thomas, the Electric Elves, and the Jefferson Square. On Saturday night a dance was held with music provided by the Foam. Sunday night was a semi-formal affair consisting of a buffet dinner: and a dance with the music by the Wool. A new club which was started this year at Wilby was the Peace Club. It was the first among the city high schools, and it was concerned with world peace and world and national problems. The Ski Club was also formed this year, and the Pep Club was spiritedly reorganized. A major event of the Wilby Student Council was the Casino Royale”. Music was provided by the Power in the Wilby gym, which was decorated in a Bonnie and Clyde fashion. The teachers' cafe, better known as the Casino, was filled with lively gambling entertainment. Another big event was our senior class play. This was held May 23 and 24 and was entitled The Solid Gold Cadillac . It was a great success, thanks to the direction of Miss Moritis. The Wilby senior class officers, advised by Mr. Genova, Miss Membrino, and Mr. Tracy, planned an unforgettable prom. The traditional location of Waverly Inn was done away with. The class voted to hold the prom at the Park Plaza Hotel in New Haven. However we did not as yet have the consent of the Board of Education. An assembly was held at which the Wilby seniors were told that the prom must be held at the Waverly Inn. However voting once again the class decided unanimously to have no prom at all! After a few days of front page publicity, we were told that we could have our prom at the Park Plaza Hotel. We had our prom on June 18. The theme was For Once In My Life and the music was provided by Johnny Paris and the Variations. When we took our final exams, we realized that the end of our high school careers was near. We attended graduation practice and received our caps and gowns. Then came the, big night, June 24, 1969! This was the end of four glorious years, but it was also the beginning of a whole new life 155 Whip-it SiMMr MMfr M MISS MARY SCHMIDT Retired 163 MISS HELEN HEALEY Retired 164 APPRECIATION EDMUND FOSSBENDER Mr. Fossbender did much work and devoted many hours in order that this yearbook be a success. He went out of his way to provide us with fine photog- raphy of every Wilby function during the year. We, the class of 1969, cannot thank him enough for assuming the tremendous task of advisor and photographer. WILBY (Alma Mater) When we but hear the name of Wilby We will rise and pledge anew The measure of all our heart’s devotion To her we will still be true We cannot refuse her when she calls us To work or play or sing We’ll do our best what e’er befalls us And honor to Wilby bring Then raise your voice for Wilby Let her name and her fame be known For her we stand, and now each hand For her shall be proudly shown Fair Play” is still our motto May the best man win the game” And so we’re proud to shout aloud THE WILBY NAME
