TO HER WE WILL STILL BE TRUE. 2 MISS MARY SCHMIDT DEDICATION We the class of 1968 wish to thank Miss Mary Schmidt for her sendee and guidance through the years, by dedicating this yearbook to her. Miss Schmidt, a native of Water- bury, has been in the field of teaching since 1938. After teaching in Lensington and Crosby High School, Miss Schmidt came to her alma mater, Wilby, where she now teaches German. Miss Schmidt has taught many subjects including typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, World History and English, but pre- fers to teach German. Having graduated from the College of New Rochelle she did graduate work at Yale and the University of Southern Illinois. Then she spent several summers in Germany and traveled extensively throughout Europe. So we the class of 68 say thank you and wish her success in the future. MR. JOSEPH MEMBRINO Principal Mr. Membrino has devoted the past forty-two years of his life to the education of the high school students of Waterbury. His dedication and unselfish sacrifices have been responsible for many improvements which have developed in our school system. After receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Boston University and Master’s Degree at Yale, he began his active role in education. Being an alumnus of Wilby, he felt that this would be the ideal place to begin his lifetime ambition. We the Class of 1968 wish to thank Mr. Membrino for all he has done to guide us in our edu- cational pursuits and wish him success in the future. Vice Principal Mr. Donahue, probably more than anyone else, has had more to do with the outcome of the Wilby student body. As chief enforcer around the halls of Wilby, students tend to consider him as an opposing force. He deserves all, if not more, of the thanks of every graduation senior in the class of 1968. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School here in Waterbury, he attended Fairfield University where he received his Bachelor and Master s Degrees. He took post graduate courses at Southern Connecticut State College, Catholic University, and Dan- bury State College. We the class of 1968 wish to thank Mr. Donahue for all he has done for our class and wish him a continued and happy career as our esteemed vice-principal. MR. This year’s team was captained by senior Jim Cipriano who enjoyed another out- standing season. Among the laurels garnered by Jim this season were: the Civitan award for good sportsmanship and the Dartmouth award. Jim also was voted the most valuable player on the Wilby team. The outstanding back on the Wildcats was Junior Jimmy Little. Awards won by Jimmy were The Charles Nardozzi Memorial Trophy given to the outstanding player in Waterbury. The Wildcats then moved to the state semi finals before losing. Co-Captains Artie Williams and Richard Lebel were two of the top rebounders and scorers in the valley. Other starters including Rod Eason, Joe Ramonas and Dave White had a big hand in the success of the Wildcats. The Wildcats big victories came when they de- feated Sacred Heart in the first game and when they defeated Eli Whitney in the state tournament. In both of these games, Rich Lebel got 31 points and Artie Williams got 30. 75 Seniors—Left to right: Gordon Salokus, Joe Ramonas, Ron Spann, Art Williams, Jack Delaney, Rich Lebel, Rod Eason, Ron Pugliese, Glenn Orkin. 76 Valley's high scorer Rich Lebel BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Ansonia Watertown Sacred Heart Kennedy Crosby Torrington Ansonia Watertown Torrington Notre Dame Naugatuck Kennedy Immaculate Conception Sacred Heart Pulaski Immaculate Conception Naugatuck Kaynor Crosby T ournament Eli Whitney Branford East Catholic Co-captain Rich Lebel and Art Williams All-City, All-Valley, All-State Art Williams Rod Eason from favorite spot Romonas from top of key Next year's co-captain, Dave White SWIMMING First rote, left to right: Tom Petro-Roy, Fletcher Ostrander, John Hofeldt, Dave Zucker co- captain, Frank Ryan, Tom Bolan, Gary Androphy, Vincent Camissa. SWIM TEAM The 1967-68 season saw the Wilby Swimming Team compile its most impressive won-lost record (11-3) and capture the runner-up position in the C.I.A.C. Class L State Swim Meet. The senior- dominated team under the fine coaching of Mr. Rich- ard Genova lowered nearly every school mark. The nucleus of the team was found in Co-Captains Dave Foster and Dave Zucker who dominated the freestyle events. The medley relay of Zachary Carmen, Terry Ryan, Tom Bolan, and Frank Ryan represented one of the finest in the state as was the final relay, made up of Tom Petro-Roy, Mitch Orkin, Bob McKee, and Ryan. Freshman Diver Gil Cyr and Fletcher Ostran- der combined for a 1-2 punch in most meets. In the State Meet, New Canaan High School squeezed a victory of only two points by beating Wilby in the last relay. Besides the State Meet, per- haps the most exciting meet was the one with Nau- gatuck for which nearly 500 upperclassmen turned out to see their team clinch a 54-41 victory in the last event. Coach Genova anticipates another exceptional season next year since such names as Orlin, McKee, Carmen, Terry Ryan, George Gaylord and Mickey Verno will return. During the 1967-68 season the Wilby Swimming Team reached maturity and we are confident that it will meet with continued success in the coming years. State Meet Standouts Medley Relay: (Z. Carmen, T. While co-captain Jimmy Little made a 20-foot leap on the broad jump, co-captain Joe Tren- talange ran the 100-yard dash in 10:5 seconds and completed the 440-yard run in 54 seconds flat. Wil- by's relay team of Dave Foster, Joe Trentalange, Lemark Henderson, and Jimmy Little broke the old record for the 880 yard with a time of 1:39:5. Louie Semprini set a new record for the 2 mile with 11:11 minutes. In the Naugatuck Valley League Championship meet, Wilby was competing with trackmen from Kennedy, Crosby, Sacred Heart, Wolcott, Watertown, Torrington, and Ansonia. In the 440-yard run Joe Trentalange placed third, while Dave Foster came in fourth. Lemark Henderson took third place in the high jump while Jimmy Little placed second in triple jump and came in fifth in the hundred-yard dash. The Wilby relay team came in second. Wilby wasn't so fortunate in the City meet and with all its efforts, it only placed fourth. The seniors on the team were Dave Foster, Jerry Golebiewski, Tom Rozum, and Joe Trentalange. The team compiled a 6-6 record, good for a second place finishing in city play and third place in the valley. This year’s team was led by a capable senior, captain John Hofedt. Others on the team were: Bob Brown, A1 Blancato, and Bill Murphy. Go Green! This ex- pression is familiar to the school spirited Wilbyites who helped cheer our teams on to victory. Our Cheerleaders, dressed in stunning emerald green and white uni- forms, kept the spirit of the crowds up whether winning or losing. Their efforts were well rewarded when after all their work, the boys came home with top hon- ors. In order to achieve perfection the girls practiced regularly throughout the summer and school year. Now they wish to leave with the hopes of seeing the new co-captains Linda Lanese and Marie Kenney continue the Wilby tradition, and they wish the best of luck to them. They would also like to thank Miss Patricia Cullinan for her guidance and under- standing. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, We have hereunto set our hands and seals at Waterbury, Connecticut, this eighteenth day of June in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-eight. Signed, THE CLASS OF 68” CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR 1964 - 1965 We entered the halls of Wilby knowing that they held many new and wonderful ex- periences for us. We were now on our own and as the months went by the class of 1968 proved to be very capable of this new responsibility. The sports at Wilby gave each of us many exciting thrills as we watched our teams show that real Wilby spirit. Although our football and basektball teams did not capture any titles, our swimming team went on to the CIAC tournament and tied for 6th place with Sacred Heart. June came faster than expected and exams were just around the corner. We had made many new friends and grown up quite a lot since the days we entered Wilby’s halls. This year of all the new adjustments which all freshmen are expected to make was over, we would return to Wilby next fall as sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR 1965 - 1966 When we returned to Wilby in the fall, we were greeted by many familiar faces. However, we knew that some of our friends would no longer be at Wilby. . . Because of the city-wide redistricting for school zones, many of them would now be at Kennedy. We also found that there were new students at Wilby from Crosby and they soon gained the feeling of belonging at Wilby, just as we had done in our first year too. Again, the Wilby athletes showed true Wilby spirit this year, but were not fortunate to capture any titles. With the previous year’s graduation and also redistricting, the coaches had to rebuild the teams. As the year drew to a close, we realized that we would return as Juniors. We ordered our class rings in May and looked forward to coming back to Wilby as Upper Classmen. This year had also sped by. We made plans for an enjoyable summer and then we looked forward to the beginning of our junior year. JUNIOR YEAR 1966 - 1967 Summer slipped by once again and we found ourselves returning to Wilby, but this time it was as upperclassmen. Since we had ordered our class rings last May, we were very happy to receive them in November. They were a little different from last year’s rings, but we liked them and we all were so very proud to wear them. Among one of the responsibilities put on us now as upperclassmen was the task of electing four officers to lead our class this year. Our choice proved us worthy of these responsibilities and our leaders gained the confidence and trust of their classmates. 151 They were Ron Pugliese, President; Glenn Orkin, Vice President; Rita Clariza, treasurer; Pat Amodeo, Secretary. Wilby did well in sports this year. Our basketball team reached semi-quarter finals of the Cl AC tournament. In all, the teams of Wilby made us proud of the Green and White and kept up that Wilby spirit. The year passed quickly and before we knew it was spring again. This time, we have more on our minds than just exams and summer vacation. Under the direction of our class officers and their committees our Junior Prom proved to be a huge success. It was held on Friday evening, May 19th at the Colonial Club in Oxford. The theme was Somewhere My Love and will long be remembered by all who attended. Exams were soon upon us once more and then the conclusion of school until next September. Our Junior year had come to an end. We would return again in the fall with our last year at Wilby ahead of us. SENIOR YEAR 1967 - 1968 Returning to Wilby as Seniors was a big moment in our lives. We were now in our final year of High School and we felt proud. With all those years of hard work behind us, we could face the future with confidence. This year was most exciting for all sports. We shall never forget our victory in the annual football jamboree, which was followed by a very successful season. Wilby ex- celled in basketball this year. After winning the City Title, our team went on to become the Naugatuck Valley League Champions. Then, we proudly moved up in the CIAC tournament where we were defeated only by top ranking East Catholic in the semi-finals. The swimming team was awarded a beautiful trophy for second place in the Class A State finals. Another event marking us as seniors was the election of our Class Officers under the leadership of Dudley Ashwood, President; Mike DeBonis, Vice President; Dan Guer- rera, Treasurer; and Pat Amodeo, Secretary. We had a rewarding senior year. On February 10, 120 Wilby seniors went on a winter outing up at Oak n' Spruce Resort Lodge in Massachusetts . . . UNFORGETTABLE! This was the year of class pictures, unending college applications, singing Christmas Carols in the cafe, unforgettable camera days, Casual Days, and the Class of ’53 vs. Class of '68 basketball game. This was not only a year of happiness, but also one of sadness. The tragic assassina- tions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy gave us a deep sense of loss. One of the final events of our senior year was our class play What a Life” under the direction of Miss Karen Moritis. The entire cast did a splendid job, with Carolyn Longhi and Glen Orkin in the leading roles. Our senior year closed with the Sunrise-Sunset Senior Prom, which was held at Waverly Inn on June 7th. This was the last activity that we would have together and it proved to be a high success, something that those who attended will never forget. Again exams were upon us. The year had just flown by. On June 18th, the Class of 1968 met at Wilby for the last time. With a feeling of great achievement, but also one of sadness we received our diplomas and joined the ranks of Wilby Alumni”. RETIRED 162 MARGARET E. KELLY APPRECIATION MR. FRANK MURNANE On behalf of the Yearbook Staff, Yearbook Officers, and Graduating Class of 1968 we express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our advisor, Mr. Frank Murnane. Without his help, publication of this book would not have been possible. 163 PHOTOGRAPHY TO HER WE WILL STILL WILBY (Alma Mater) When we but hear the name of Wilby We will rise and pledge anew The measure of all our heart’s devotion To her we will still be true We cannot refuse her when she calls us To work or play or sing We’ll do our best what e’er befalls us And honor to Wilby bring Then raise your voice for Wilby Let her name and her fame be known For her we stand, and now each hand For her shall be proudly shown Fair Play” is still our motto May the best man win the game” And so we’re proud to shout aloud THE WILBY NAME c % I 1 . ,r v.. -? t • v y •¥ H: . • ; ♦ 4 • i. . ‘ ,' •■ ■ : . .
