Through the many years . . . DEDICATION Margaret E. Kelley 2 iffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffififfiffifififififfiffi In past years, the Wilby student body has been very fortunate to have been under the guidance of many devoted teachers. It is our privilege, as the Class of ’67, to show our appreciation to one of the many—Miss Margaret E. Kelley. Miss Kelley graduated from Crosby High School and Arnold College where she acquired a B.S. in Health Education. She also did graduate work at Yale University and the University of Connecticut. Miss Kelley came to Wilby to teach Physical Education after two years of Social Service Work in Utica and Yonkers, New York, for the National Catholic Welfare Conference. In 1950 she became Health Educator at Wilby. For two years she served as City Chairwoman of the C.Y.O. in Waterbhry. During vacations, Miss Kelley has traveled ex- tensively throughout Europe—Norway, Sweden, Denmark, etc. As a result of her many accomplishments, which have made Wilby proud of her, the Class of ’67, hereby dedicate our yearbook to Miss Margaret E. Kelley. 3 MR. JOSEPH MEMBRINO-PRINCIPAL Mr. Membrino has devoted 41 years of his life to the education of the high school students of W aterbury. After receiving his Bachelor of Business Ad- ministration degree at Boston University and Master’s Degree at Yale, he began his active role in education. Being an alumnus of Wilby, he felt that this would be the ideal place to begin his lifetime ambition. Thus—for the past seven years he has served as Principal of Wilby High School. We the Class of 1967 wish to thank Mr. Mem- brino for all he has done to guide us in our edu- cational pursuits and wish him much success in the future. 4 MR. AMBROSE EGAN VICE PRINCIPAL Mr. Egan, who kept us out of many difficulties during these past four years here at Wilby, de- serves all, if not more, of the thanks of every graduating senior in the class of 1967. Although, he retired in the middle of the year, his helpful- ness, understanding and good will will long remain in our minds and our hearts. Now, as upperclassmen, we see that being the head of discipline at Wilby and in every other high school is not the easiest job to undertake. Mr. Egan has fulfilled his position well and be- cause of this has found himself the friend of an- other graduating class. THE CLASS OF 1967! THANK YOU, MR. EGAN! MR. THEODORE DONAHUE VICE PRINCIPAL Mr. Donahue took over the difficult job of Vice Principal on March 20, 1967 after the retirement of Mr. Ambrose Egan and we wish him success in his new capacity. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School here in Waterbury, he attended Fairfield Univer- sity where he received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees. He took post graduate courses at Southern Connecticut State College, Catholic University, and Danbury State College. From 1952 to 1954 Mr. Donahue served in the U.S. Army and taught in Korea. He taught for two years in Driggs School and before becoming Vice Principal he had been the Junior and Senior Class Advisor, moderator of the Press Club, and he taught English I,II,III. We’re sure that Mr. Donahue will be a fine Vice Principal and hope he has the best of luck in the future. 5 GUIDANCE TEACHERS Miss Mae McKenna Mr. Domenic Coviello Mrs. Elena McLean First Row: Dorothy Sutton, Mary Smith, Rosaleen Price, Shyla Wilkinson, Joseph Membrino, Margaret Kelley, Theodore Donahue, Catherine Boulay, Nelda Alieva, Melba Membrino, Shirley Albanese Second Row: Vincent Mancuso, Mary Walsh, John Reilly, James Tyrell, Mary Fox, Mary Schmidt, Adelaed Soucy, Carole Searfoss, George Haddad, Daniel Cicchetti, William Kramer, Karen Moritis, Henry Pronovost, Mary Hutch- inson Third Row: Dominic Coviello, William Evans, Edmund Fossbender, Leonard Bergantino, John Flaherty, Robert Letsky, Leroy Kleinchmidt, John Delpo, Richard Genova, Louis Mam- ferro Fourth Row: Frank Mu mane, Aldo Cipriano, William Tracy, Michael Hayes, Russell Hanson, Gospard LcBlanc, Francis Testa, Frank Granato, Robert Wise, Walter Lanoue. 8 HEADS OF DEPARTMENTS Nelda Alieva.................Foreign Languages Joseph Anthony..........................Science Lucy Bowes.......................Social Studies Katherine Crary........................ Wilby’s football team possessed plenty of aggressiveness and spirit, but the ’66 gridders lacked the experience neces- sary at the crucial plays. This was evident in the season’s record which showed only one triumph in eight starts. The opening game with Crosby was a heart- breaker for the squad. They lost their first decision 14-8. After this defeat, morale and confidence of the squad arose with a decisive victory against St. Joseph’s 22-14. Wilby lost its next four games to Watertown 28-8; Torrington 20-0; Naugatuck 27-6; and Kennedy 20-6. This was enough to de- moralize any ball club. Wilby’s next game was against high ranking Bullard Havens Tech, a team that had but one defeat. The Wildcats showed their true ability in this game in which Wilby was defeated by only 26-24. Wilby’s chances for victory were hampered by ineligibility and injury to key players. The team went into the Thanksgiving game with many of its starting players out of action. The loss of these players was felt in the 31-6 defeat to Sacred Heart. The Sacred Heart game marked the close of fine football careers for the Wilby seniors, which in- cluded Co-captains Bob Marcella and Doug Robbins. Other seniors were Len Genovese, Steve Skipp, John McGrath, George Lanoue, Paul Britto, Presley Joines, Steve Wagge, Carl Vecca and John Barrett. The All City squad was represented by half back. Bob Marcella, and guard, George Lanoue. Bob was also chosen on the All Valley and All District teams. Wilby was very proud of the fine effort shown by every member of our team. The team showed an ex- traordinary amount of improvement from game to game under the excellent coaching of Mr. Jack De- laney and his assistant Mr. William Tracy. The boys had it rough at the start of the season but they soon returned with an amazing winning streak, conquering 10 of the last 12 games. No one could have stopped them! Wilby then qualified for the tourney with a season finish of 13 wins and 7 loses. In the tournament the first opponents for the Wildcats were East Catholic, the third ranking team in the state. The “Cats” now had a chance to show off their outstanding abilities and they de- feated East Catholic 66-63. Wilby gave up their place in the tourney to the Torrington Raiders with the 81-76 upset. The boys, however, player the game well and we are proud of every single one of them. Congratulations are a must to all the players and especially to Ted Johnson, captain of the team, and Art Williams an outstanding junior who has been chosen to be a player for the N.V.L. Allstar team. Also a special thanks and congratulations should be extended to all the fans who have brought back that “01’ Wilby Spirit” and who have sup- ported their team through both the wins and the loses. The final game of the season was one of the most exciting ones and was against Crosby with our team collecting seventeen hits. The winning pitcher of that game was Lenny Samela, who also got four hits. Leaders in the hitting department throughout the season were co- captains Bob Faber and Russ Pettinicchi and seniors George Lanoue and Dave Blinstrubas. The Wildcats’ pitching staff was a capable one with Russ Pettinicchi, Lenny Samela, and Gary Veilleux. The team’s all around performance this season was good, and it was just one win short of gaining a state tournament berth. A great deal of credit should go to coach Evans and the entire Wilby team for a season that was packed with thrills and a record to be proud of. The lettermen were Pres- ley Joines, Steve Henderson, Doug Robbins, John Barrett, Joe Trentetange, Jim Little, Lemarc Hen- derson, and Dave Foster. As we reached Wilby, the school we grew to love in our four years here, we were optimistic and possibly a little frightened. How were we to know that there were only three floors and the halls were not long and dark corridors? Oh! How quickly we learned about the phanton elevator and other pranks for the unwary Freshman. The year went on and our class learned to stand on their own feet inasmuch as they knew what was expected of them. Our first year flew by and the Sophomore year was ahead of us before we realized that we would soon no longer be Freshman. Sports in our Freshman year were very limited due to the sanctions, but in the sports field we were always considered to be competitive. SOPHOMORE In the fall of 1964, we entered Wilby more confident than we did in the previous year. The building, the classrooms, the faces of teachers and friends were familiar to us. For the first time we had a true sense of belonging to Wilby. Insofar as athletics were concerned we were proud of our teams. Although the football and basketball teams did not capture any titles, the swimming team sur- passed all expectations. Under the direction of Mr. Richard Genova, our new coach, the team went on to victory by tying for sixth place with Sacred Heart at the state CIAC meet. Also this year we made a first at Wilby when we started a track team. Our team was coached by Mr. O’Brien. His team and all our teams fought hard for their Alma Mater. A new conflict faced our class. What would become of our class when Kennedy High School was completed and redistricting began. Would we all stay at Wilby or would some of us be sent to the new school? It was finally decided by the Board of Education that our class would be split. Half of us would remain at Wilby and the other half would be transferred to Kennedy High School. However we who remained at Wilby, determined that we would make new friends and to- gether we would all strive to make our Junior Class the best in Wilby’s History. Junior Year Just as it had come upon us in quiet degrees, so did the summer season seem to gradually slip away until at last we found ourselves once more on route to school. Certainly for all it was an eager occasion in the sense that we had, at last, suc- ceeded in achieving the long-sought status of upperclassmen. Yet, for too many it was a time of forlorn pessimism for they now traveled Wilby’s halls for the very first time. The city-wide redistricting of school zones had indeed left its mark. Where once so many tried—and true friends of years past had exchanged exuberant greetings, there now appeared only the cautious glances of utter strangers. Fortunately, this air of aloofness could not long endure the daily routine of classes, with the result that hundreds of lasting friendships were formed. While our studies this year had not at all ceased to require their usual amont of tedious efforts in preparation, we, nevertheless, seemed destined from the start to enjoy a school year uniquely different from those we had ever before experienced. This, no doubt, was, in part, due to the better understanding of teachers and cur- riculum which we had acquired through two previous years of high school enroll- ment. But of even more significance was the fact that as juniors we would now qualify for all the privileges reserved for upperclassmen. Certainly a most momentous occasion was the receiving of class rings. Inscribed with all the senti- ments of Wilby tradition, they were of gold setting and a green stone. Also, of major importance to all was the electing of class officers. These were as follows: Robert Marcella, President; David Cassidy, Vice-President; Patricia Ciar- lone, Secretary; and, Donal Murphy, Treasurer. Never before had we, as a class, been called upon to exert our finest judgement in selecting such representatives. However, our choice proved to be of a very wise nature, as demonstrated by the officers’ splendid organization and presentation of their main project—the Wilby Junior Prom. This long anticipated affair, whose theme was “A Summer Place,” was held on Friday evening, May 14, 1966, at La Quinta’s Rose Room. Indeed, joy- ous memories of the occasion will be cherished by all who attend for many more years to come. Exams, which were soon in following, marked the conclusion of, once again, another school year—our Junior Year. Eagerly, and yet with a slight tinge of sad- ness, we embarked upon another summer of fun and frolic. SENIOR YEAR Seniors already! We finally reached the top of the ladder and achieved the status of upperclassmen. Wilby was off to a bad start in sports but redeemed itself during the basketball season. We did exceptionally well and managed to reach the semi-quarter finals of the CIAC tournament. Our swimming team did well, as did our baseball and track teams. During our senior year Mr. Egan retired and Mr. Donahue became our new Vice Principal. We also encountered the revised scheduling due to the longer school day. This affected the time alloted for clubs and activities. As Seniors, we were the first to be involved in a political campaign for class officers. After five days of endless displays of the candidates ingenuity, Steve Potoff, Danny Rinaldi, Dave Cassidy and Pat Ciarlone were chosen to lead our class. Time flew as everyone settled down to an important year of studying in preparation for college. We looked forward to Spring and will long remember the day our pictures were taken, the Glee Club concert and our class play. The musical “Annie Get Your Gun” starring Donald Milia and Margi Rosnick, under the direction of Miss Moritis was a great class project and a huge success. June brought the two most important events in any student’s life. Our senior prom, “Three Coins In A Fountain” was held June 2nd at Waverly Inn. Excitement and gaiety filled the air as we enjoyed our last get together as a class. The climax of our senior year was our graduation. With it came the sighs of relief, the shouts of joy and the tears of happiness, mixed with a touch of sadness. Now, as we head along our divided paths, we look back and know we will always remain true to Wilby High School.
