as time went by .. . HELEN HEALEY DEDICATION For a number of years many devoted teachers have given all their efforts to the Wilby student body. This year, it is an honor to acknowledge a deeply dedicated teacher who is quite familiar to all—Miss Helen Healey. Miss Healey came to Wilby in 1928 as a business mathematics teacher. With the generalization of the Waterbury Public School System, Miss Healey was named head of the Wilby Mathematics Department. She has been, and still is, the only person ever to occupy this position. Miss Healey attended St. Mary's Grammar School and Crosby High School. She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s Academy and St. Elizabeth's College in New Jersey. She also did graduate work at Columbia University. After graduation she taught in Ohio at the Brown Country School of the Ursulines. During her vacations Miss Healey has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Miss Healey is one of the most accomplished teachers that Wilby is proud to call her own. Thus we, the Class of 1966, hereby dedicate our Yearbook to this truly devoted teacher. MR. JOSEPH MEMBRINO—Principal Mr. Membrino has devoted 40 years of his life to the education of the high school students of Waterbury. After receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Boston University and Masters Degree at Yale, he began his active role in education. Being an alumnus of Wilby, he felt that this would be the ideal place to begin his lifetime ambition Thus—for the past six years he has served as Principal of Wilby High School. We the Class of 1966, wish to thank Mr. Membrino for all he has done to guide us in our educational pursuits and wish him much success in the future. 4 MR. AMBROSE EGAN Vice-Principal Mr. Egan, who has kept us out of many difficulties during these past four years here at Wilby, deserves all, if not more, of the thanks of every graduating senior in the class of 1966. , w..„ 1 - Now, as upperclassmen, we see that being the head of discipline at 1 5 ant 1 every other high school is not the easiest job to undertake. Mr. Egan has fulfilled his position well and because of this has found himself the friend of another graduating class, THE CLASS OF 1966! THANK YOU, MR. FOOTBALL TEAM In pre-season predictions, Wilby’s Football Team was not rated as a Naugatuck Valley League power. Coach Fred O'Brien, and Assistant Coach Jim Kelly were faced with a major rebuilding job. They placed their hopes for a successful season on Senior Tri- Captains George DeBonis, Walt Migneault, and Bob Zailckas, along with hard-running tailback Don Cip- riano. Due to inexperience and injuries, the Wildcats dropped their first five outings. In the initial game of the season, our boys played a hard-nosed style of football, but succumbed to the superior speed and aerial attack of the Crosby Bulldogs. The score was 28-0. Wilby continued its losing streak bowing to Kennedy 14-6, to Wilson of Middletown 14-0, and in a close tussle to the Red Raiders of Torrington 18-6. The turning point of the season came with a hard fought, stiff-armed encounter with highly-rated Naugatuck. Although our Wildcats lost by the mar- gin of one touchdown to the Greyhounds, it instilled in our team new confidence, and the desire and will to win. Wilby dominated play in its next outing and easily defeated Kennedy 12-6. Wilby dropped its next game to arch-rival Crosby by a 38-8 score. The vastly- improving 'Cats rolled over Bullard Havens of Bridgeport by a 14-8 margin. Wilby finished its season with a big Thanksgiving Day victory over strong Sacred Heart by a 12-6 score. Desire, hustle, and second-effort were the main factors responsible for the showing of this year’s Football Team. Our boys played an aggressive style of football, giving their whole-hearted effort until the final gun. Wilby managed to place three seniors on the ALL-CITY Team.. They were Center Bob Zailckas, Guard Walt Migneault, and Tailback Don Cipriano. Tackle John Gowlis, and End Don Hard- wick were both named to the ALL-CITY second team. Other seniors who paced our team this season were George DeBonis, Nick Lena, Mike Burke, John Verbickas, Mike lanantuoni, Jim Alonzo, Bob Prono- vost, and Dave Yarrington. 64 THE SCHEDULE We They Crosby 0 28 Kennedy 6 14 Wilson 0 14 Torrington 6 18 Naugatuck 8 14 Kennedy 12 6 Crosby 8 38 Bullard Havens 14 8 Sacred Heart 12 6 Won Lost 3 6 4 Don't Stop Now! Although faced with the loss of all but one of last season's players, plus the loss of most of his junior varsity through the redistricting of the city's high schools, Coach Evans placed his hopes for a successful cam- paign on Captain Josh Kirven, Ted Johnson, George Lanoue, Bob Faber, a Crosby transfer, and Art Wil- liams a former Croft standout. Under the guiding hand of Coach Evans, the Wildcats were molded into a smooth, offensive unit. The team was one of the tallest in the Valley, but due to lack of experience, lost most of its games by slim margins, sometimes by only a few points. In the initial outing of the season, the Wildcats led for most of the game; however a blazing Pulaski rally in the closing minutes subdued the spirited Wildcats by a 58-55 score. Wilby split its next two decisions losing to Ansonia and overcoming city rival Kennedy. In the most exciting game of the season, the Wildcats, with a pressing defense, forced highly rated Sacred Heart into overtime before bowing in the extra period. Wilby dropped its next six games before devastating the Watertown Indians with an exceptional all around team effort. However, the Wildcats were destined to see victory only once in their last five outings of the campaign. Wilby managed to place Ted Johnson, a Junior guard, on the All-City first team and on the All- Valley second team. His superb all around play and deadly outside shooting spotlighted the season with his high total of 25 points against Watertown. Throughout the season, the spirited Wildcats showed aggressiveness and untiring hustle until the final buzzer. With the loss of only one senior, Coach Evans can indeed look forward to next year’s basket- ball squad where he will find the winning combina- tion of height, experience and excellent shooting ability. To Coach Evans and the Wilby cagers, we wish every success for a victorious season this coming year. Led by senior tri-captains, Walt Migneault, Chuck Lasky, and Joe Devine, the Wilby Ducks” compiled a fine record of seven wins against four losses. The mermen opened the season with a resounding victory over Xavier of Middletown 70-36, coupled with wins over Torrington and East Haven. The Wildcats, however, were the victim of losses to Sacred Heart, Naugatuck, and powerful Crosby in a close encounter. The 'Cats gathered momentum with wins over St. Joseph, North Haven, and Middletown before losing to city-rival Kennedy. The Wilby mer- men ended its regular season with an impressive victory over West Haven. In the Naugatuck Valley League meet, the Wildcats finished fourth with 34 points. Along with tri-captains Migneault, Lasky, and De- vine, other standouts such as Dave Zucker, Jay Derwin, Dave Foster, Don Murphy, and Jim Bon- vissuto, gave their utmost effort and energy all season long. Their strong will and fierce desire for victory made them the best swimming team in the history of Wilby. Led by Co-captains Don Cipriano and Steve Henderson, the Wildcats were hampered by the unavailability of Municipal Stadium for practice, due to the construction of the new baseball field for the Waterbury Giants. This was a main factor for the slow start of the Wilby thin- clads in the early season. The Wildcats dropped meets to Ansonia, Torrington, Watertown, Crosby, and Sacred Heart before devastating City rival Ken- nedy. In the N.V.L. meet, the Cats placed fifth with sixteen points. Co-captain Steve Henderson led the Wildcats with a total of ninety-one points, followed by Don Cipriano with 53 points, and Walt Migneault with forty-six. Other seniors who contributed to the success of the squad were miler—Jim Petrosky, and fieldmen—Dave Yarrington and Mike Moskaluk. VERA GORDEEV ’67 CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR Entering high school was a new and bewildering experience for each and everyone of us. Ours was the second class to be generalized under the new plans for redistricting. Many new fads came into being during this year. The opposing forces of continental and collegiate clothes was one of them. Saddle shoes came in with leaps and bounds and left just as fast. New dance crazes such as the Popeye” and others were enjoyed by everyone and Friday night social became the top social event of the week. As far as sports were concerned, Wilby was far from the top of the list. However the tremendous improvement in all the teams brightened Wilby’s athletic future. Win- ning the annual Football Jamboree showed everyone that Wilby was capable of doing a fine job. Our basketball team did fairly well, and Wilby was proud that the Billy Finn Memorial Award was awarded to Arthur Moore, a Wilby senior. June came and we were confronted with exams. They were hard to adjust to at first but then, before we knew it, they were all over with: Now we were no longer freshman. SOPHOMORE YEAR We now entered Wilby with a true sense of belonging. No longer were the corridors strange and the classrooms hard to find. It is necessary to recall here a tragic historical fact. A very sad and horrible event occurred on November 22, 1963. The beloved President Kennedy was mortally wounded by an assassin while riding in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. The whole country and the world grieved over this great loss. Many new teachers were on the Wilby scene. We wondered a little about them at first, but soon found them to be our friends. Little did we know that in our remaining years at Wilby these same teachers would be a great help to us in organizing and plan- ning many activities. Extra-curricular activities were limited during the first part of the year due to teachers’ sanctions. However, they were back in full swing during the second semester. In Sports our football team enjoyed one of its best seasons, beating rival Sacred Heart on Thanksgiving Day for the first time in many years. All of the teams were finally beginning to develop. Wilby was no longer a business school and there were now enough boys to build strong teams. The juniors voted to change the class ring. The ring was changed from the traditional picture of Wilby mounted on Black to a green emerald stone in a 10 karat gold setting. Then exams were upon us. It was a great relief when they were over and we all looked forward to our junior year. JUNIOR YEAR In 1964 we entered Wilby’s doors for the first time as upperclassmen. Many exciting events were now ahead of us. We started off by electing our first class officers who served their fellow classmates to the best of their ability, proving themselves to be worthy of their positions. Those chosen were: President, Nicholas Pontelandolfo; Vice- President, George DeBonis; Secretary, Susan Miller; and Treasurer, Nancy Savino. Although the football and basketball teams did not meet up to expectations, the Wilby swimming team proved to be the surprise of the season. Not only did our swimmers win the first meet in history, but under the direction of its new coach, Mr. Richard Genova, also went on to have a winning season. Coach O’Brien took over to field Wilby's first track team. All in all our athletes fought hard and well for their school. Then came the conflict of what would become of our class after the new Kennedy High School was completed and redistricting began. Would some of us go to the new school and others stay here or would we all stay at Wilby? Orders for our rings were halted and we were left in a state of confusion. Probably the most exciting event of the year for us was the Junior Prom, the theme being Some Enchanted Evening.” The Colonial Club in Oxford was the setting for this affair which will long be remembered by all. SENIOR YEAR Time flew by and before we knew it we were in the midst of our senior year—our last year here at Wilby. After much indecision as to whether or not our class would be split up because of redistricting, it was finally decided that we remain as a whole at Wilby. We became the upperclassmen to many new faces from both Crosby and Croft. Elected as senior class officers during the early part of the year were: President, Nicholas Pontelandolfo; Vice-President, George Clark; Secretary, Susan Cox; and Trea- surer, Edith DiFloria. Orders for our class rings were again made and at the end of the winter we were finally able to proudly display the long awaited rings. Hard hit by graduation, Wilby athletes were not fortunate enough to capture any title, but the effort put into each and every event showed their fighting spirit for Wilby. Our coaches started out in a disorderly fashion, as some of their finest athletes left for Kennedy and others equally as good arrived from the other schools. Joan Wilke, as Duchess Gloriana, and Joe Devine, as Tully Bascom, played the lead- ing roles in the senior class play, The Mouse That Roared. On May 27 the auditorium was packed with a crowd eager to see the subtle comedy. This proved to be a rewarding experience for the large cast and crew who had spent long hours at work preparing for this night. On the night of June 3 Waverly Inn became the setting for Ebb Tide,” the Senior Prom. Fishnets and seashells provided an atmosphere of wistful dreams for all present. And then it came—June twenty-first—graduation night for the class of ’66. This was the final night of our high school years, a moment never to be forgotten. Time had gone by—four years to be exact—and now it had all come to an end. But this night also marked a beginning—the beginning of a new way of life for each and every one of us. As we filed up onto the auditorium stage for the last time as high school students, we knew we would look back in the years to come and cherish our memories of dear ol’ Wilby High.
